Dickinson leads Trans-Cal Sports~an By John Bethea ocr. 16 After the finish of the fourth round of the first annual Miller High Life Trans-Cal Series for sportsmen riders today, Rudy BRENTWOOD, CA, 34 Dickinson was the only rider left who is perfect in scoring, Dickinson, of R&D fame. watched his two closest rivals in the Intermediate class drop out of the perfect scores. Coming into this weekend, T~d Simmons and Alan Olson were tIed with Dickinson, having the maximum 60 point tabulation with just two rounds to go. However, both Simmons and Olson failed to score in the top three overall in their respective classes while Dickinson banged out back-to-back moto victories for the fourth Saturday in a row. Dickin. son now leads all Intermediates in the race for a brand new motorcycle, donated from Suzuki, Honda or Yamaha. Three bikes are up for awards, but which goes to which .class has not been decided yet. Dickinson's two victories came in the 125cc Intermediate Division Two race and Sean Corcoran (Suz) was runner-up both times out. Wesley Furrh (Hon) recouperated from a first race seventh to take third in the next and gathered third overall. . Simmons won his opener moto, 10 the 250cc Intermediate contest, but several spills dropped the Suzuki rider to an eventual 10th place and fifth overall. He still rides atop the standings with 70 while today's winner, Jim Whipple of Fresno (Su.z) pull~ in to a tie for second place wuh KeVIn Brown (Suz) second today; each has 56 points. Alan Olson's fourth place finish at Sand Hill still leaves him in first place in the standings with 73 while today's runner-up, Shawn Lane (Mai) is second with 58. Richard Boe (Hon) of San Mateo rode his first race of the series and took a first overall. Leading the competition for the 125cc motorcycle to be given to the top Junior rider' is Ernest G~nzalezo~ Whittier, who has piloted hIS SuzukI to two firsts and two seconds in the series, including a sweep of the 250cc class this weekend. Duane Qualle (Yam) of Down~y is still seco~d wi~ 59, despite a fIfth overall 10 thIS round. Keith Adams appeared to be the overall winner in the 500cc class aboard a KTM, until it was reported after the race that he was riding out of class. He was protested and. i~ w~s later confirmed. So Adams, nd10g u high in first, is disqualified from. the series. Jim Ashl~y now moves l!lto the point lead wuh the results be10g re-figured all the way back to the series opener. MX By Suanne Light ocr. 10 Round four of the big money Northwest Challenge motocross series had Cory Klaudt put his Seattle Yamaha Honda into the KENT, WA, winner's' circle by going 4-1 in the 125cc Pro class over first moto winner Robb Manning on the Totem Lake Honda/Hi-Point sponsored CR. Manning later came back to top both Open Pro motos on a CR480R to take the majority of tne purse payout. A new face to the series was Danny Diesso, who triumphed in the 250cc Pro class with a 1-2 score 'over second moto winner Klaudt. The first 125cc Pro moto had Stacy Thornton (Bellevue Suz) lead a larger than usual pack at the drop of the gate over Mark White (MBC Products/Suz), Manning, Jayme Nickel (Yam) and Darren Criss (Tacoma Yam). Thornton blitzed away with the race until the halfway point in the 10-lap race when ~anning took over for the duration with Nickel also bu·mping Thorton back a notch. Manning took the moto over Nickel, White, Klaudt and Lance Richotte (Enumclaw Suz). Moto two saw Manning motor into the lead over Richotte, Klaudt, Nickel and White. Manning left the pack to eat a healthy, silty roost composed of river bed sand and large, fist-sized rocks. Richotte and Klaudt put on a spectacular show in their trading of paint for the runner-up spot, which resulte~ in Rich?tte nabbing the spot beh10d Mann1Og, who was long gone until a last lap crash put him in fifth. The win went to Klaudt after he made a daring last lap pass on Richotte. Third once again was White and Manning worked back up to fourth. Manning motored away with both Open Pro outings which were combined with the Open Experts, making up a 17-rider field. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Robb Manning IHon); 2. Todd Paulson ISuz); 3. Doherty wins sixth straight at Sears Point By Frank Nellis Photo by Bobby Brannon SONOMA, CA, OCT. 10 The American Federation of Motorcyclists (AFM) North met on a hot Indian Summer afternoon to hold the final points race of the northern California sea. son today.' The Open Super Street race started right after lunch when the track ~s at its hottest. Bernd Koegler was fIrst off the line on his Walnut Creek Honda/ND/Lockhart Honda 750F, followed by Denny Doherty on his Martek/ND/Valvoline Kawasaki and Darrel White on his Stock GPzl100 held third. Denny Doherty would not settle for second place in the final points race of the season. He took the lead from Koegler before they got to tum two. Bernd did all he could to keep Doherty in sight, but Denny was fIying and within a few laps he developed an insurmountable lead on Koegler. The race ended with Denny Doherty in first, followed by Bernd Koegler and Darrel White a distant third. The 750cc Super Street race, in contrast, was not so easy to call as all the club's hottest riders in that class were present and all of them had come loaded for bear. Kevin Peltz on his Redmond Racing Suzuki GS750 took the lead at the start and immediately began running away from Dennis Fryer, John Robertson, Scott Gray and David Wright. Robertson, riding his Pregrid Ent/ Dave Dewey/Cycle Center Honda 750, got by Fryer in tum two, but was unable to pull in Peltz who was going very fast. Meanwhile, Scott Gray riding his Healdsburg KawasakiiND/EDCO 750 Kawasaki was trying hard to get around Fryer. After four laps Gray was still chasing Fryer,. but unable to pass. Then on the fourth lap going up the straight to turn seven, Denny Fryer's engine exploded in a cloud of blue smoke. This gave Scott Gray third place. The race ended with Kevin-Peltz the apparent winner, John Robertson in second, Scott Gray in third and David Wright in fourth, but a protest was lodged by John Robertson against Kevin Peltz. Kevin ran the entire race without an alternator - a required part for the Super Street class. The Formula One and Two races are held on the race track at the same time with the start being done in two waves. In the Formula One race, Rich Oliver took the holeshot on his Supertrapp/ND/Edge Design Kawasaki. He was chased closely by Denny Doherty, Jeff Hagan and Kerry Bryant. Denny Doherty pulled off almost immediately with ignition problems. This gave Hagan a clear sh?t at Oliver, but he could not catch hIm as
