Ron Pierce is retuming his stadium road racing program to Mesa Marin Speedway in Bakersfield, where he drew about 6000 spectators last summer. The date on this meet is Saturday, Oct. 23, with the pit gates opening at noon, heat races at 6 p.m. and main events beginning at 8. There will be 260cc and Open GP cia. . ., as well as 600cc and 601cc-Open Superstreet cia. . . and a Vintage race. Riders pre-entered include Dave Aldana, Roberto Pietri and Dave Busby. Resu~ts are in on the big benefit drawmg conducted Oct. 7 following the big raffle to replenish the D-37 Legal Defense Fund coffers. The grand prize of $1000 was won by S. Peters of Simi Valley. A chap by the name of Gustavo from EI Monte won the $500 first prize, with the $250 second prize going to B. Haley of Norwalk, the $150 third prize to J. Wright of EI Toro and the $100 fourth prize to P. Barteline of Norwalk. Harley-Davidson marlteting vice-president Dave Caruso presents entertainer Jerry lewis with a $230,000 check on behalf of the "Bikers Fight Muscular Dystrophy" campaign during Lewis' annual Labor Day telethon. Road racer Freddie Spencer has "all but signed the paperwork to ride again for Honda in the GPs next season," Spencer is at home in Shreveport, LA, and on the mend from a broken collarbone and a slight concussion sustained in a crash during the final 500cc GP of the season in Germany on Sept. 26. "The most important thing to me is winning the 500cc World Championship," said Speqcer. "I was approached by both Yamaha and Suzuki and I considered their offers. I think what really made up my mind was the last month in Europe with thiggs going so well. I can tell you it's a heck of a lot easier to go out and win a race than it is to go through contract talks and such," Spencer, in his first GP season in Europe, took third in the 500cc final s,tandings on the strength of two wins, two second place finishes plus a third and a fourth. He DNF six times in the 12-event championship series. Sources have reported that multitime Supercron and National MX Champion Bob Hannah has signed with Honda for 'S3. "It's not official yet, but everything looks like it's going to work out," said Honda MX team manager Dave Arnold in a presstime phone call. "I've talked things over with Sob and sent him the contract papers, end I'm hoping to receive them back with his signature in the near future." Road racer Dale Singleton will make 2 his four-wheel racing debut in the Oct. -31" NASCAR Budweiser Late Model Sportsman Series round at Martinsville, VA. Singleton has been quietly working toward a switch from two wheels to four for a good portion of the year. Singleton will be driving a 1980 Pontiac Grand-Am for Glover Racing Enterprises of Kingsport, TN. "We're really enthusiastic about Dale's prospects in racing," said crew chief Tony Glover. "Dale was very impressive in the testing we've done, especially for someone who hasn't raced cars before," We're taking a long, hard look at our road racing and dirt track program as well as the rest of our racing programs," said Yamaha's Kenny Clarlt. "We want to see where we want to spend our money. There has been no official determination as yet on whether or not to continue the effort (dirt track/road race). We will determine what we want to do within the next two weeks and make an announcement at our dealer show (Nov. 1-3 in Reno, NV)." The 'S2 dirt track/road race program was farmed out to Bud Aksland, who prepped machinery for Jim Filice. The Dirt Diggers M.e. will be hosting a motocross in the Kernville area. on Nov. 7. It's a special track laid out on Army Corps of Engineers property, and it's only raced upon once a year, so it ought to be quite a breath of fresh air. Baylands Raceway Park has switch-' ed its weekly motocross from The Checkpoints M.C. will host their Bad Mountain Enduro on Sunday, Nov. 7 in the ever-popular Gorman area of southem California. There will be two loops of mountainous terrain (y••, there is mountainous terrain in southem Califomia) to total about 80 miles. The trail riding staff of the Motorcycle Industry Council is pleased to announce the adoption of a bouncing baby motorcycle trail in the Sequoia National Forest. Measuring in at approximately seven' miles, Stony Meadow Trail (aka 33 E24) became a family member under the Adopt-A-Trail program. You too can become the proud parent of a trail by contacting your local National 'forest office. Speaking of adopting trails, the Mendicino National Forest has over 40 trails available for adoption. In exchange for performing routine trail maintenance once a year, your club or group gets a trailhead sign announcing that it's your adopted trail. Roberts made his retum to competition in the Frontier 600. Riding a Husky with Bill Friant, Roberts and company made it past the fourth of six checks before unknown problems dropped them from the race. Saturday, Oct. 23, will be another allmotorcycle night at Orange County International Raceway. The all-bike drag race will feature unlimited runs and three money ET brackets. Gates open at I p.m. and racing goes on untjl 10 p.m. The meet is sponsored by Vance Be: Hines. The folks at OCIR also tell us there are two weeks left in the OCIR Thurs day night M)( season. Oct. 21 is a qualifier for the CRC Amateur Supercross at San Diego. Oct. 28 is the final race for '82, with action expected to resume in the early spring of '83. Ed and Verlaine Phelan, owners of the Alasta Transformer Company in Riverside, CA, sent in their entries for the Cycle News B-to-V run. Along with their entries they sent $15 to be donated directly to the Phantom Duck of the Desert, and $20 for a Cycle News subscription to be awarded during the off-road drawing at the Union 76 truck stop at the Blue Diamond off-ramp just outside of Las Vegas. The 8ritish motorcycle press reports that Triumph factory employees were recently shown a prototype 900cc water-cooled bike, dubbed the T2ooo~The mockup shown to the workers consisted of a motor housed in a duplex cradle frame. The Oct. 23 short track at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose is shaping up to be a mini; National with riders like Alex Jorgensen, Steve Eklund, Jim Felice and new AMA Grand National Champ Ricky Graham already entered. They won't be the only ones on four-strokes. however. Can-Am has announced .8000 in contingencies, and riders like Steve Morehead, Steve Eklund and Bubba Shobert will be riding the CanAm thumpers.
