NORTHERN DATELINE Word, Campbell, Whiting: Sunny Valley Champs By C lay Light SUNNY VALLE Y, O R , SE PT. 25-26 On what was billed as th e biggest race of the seaso n , a short track and TT blowo u t, Rich Word (R&B Suz) top p ed an exciting Open P ro mai n while riva l National number 70 Jeff Campbell (Grants Pas s Suz/ Elite/Simpson/Out Front Number P la tes/Suz) took a 10 lap 250cc main. AMA Junior David Whiting (D&V Electric Yam ) took the O pen A main by storm, u nder crystal blue s kies on Sa turday night. Sunday, however, was a to tal " wash out" for th e Cham p ionship TT race which had Mother Nat u re dump nearly an inch of rain on the raceway to nix ac tion for th e da y, whi ch was supposed to be th e better of the two da ys. The 250cc race wa s the fir st main in th e sh ort track progra m, wh ich was a two row, 10 rider field. Ca mpbell took th e lead on hi s Suzu ki to head ac tio n with Horban and T errv Phillip s (H-D ) in hot pursuit. Rob and Joe Klum (Gran ts Pass Hon ) were battling.for fourth a h ead of another m idpack shuffle : betwee n Sh ermerhorn a nd AMA No vices J eff Harsha (Med ford Yam ), Bob Ingle and Cl a y Li gh t (LOP /Ou t Fron t Number Pla tes Bul) on a 125. Campbell pulled away fro m second p lace .' Horban, wh o was out to clos e the ga p and in doing so shook off Phill ips, who then was faced with the Klum brothers. Horb a n pushed h is H onda extra hard an d was ri ding the wheels off his m achin e in th e process of ca tch ing lea der Ca mpbell , who rode at a . steady pace, a p ace tha t would take him across th e lin e with a sm all lead. Horban took second, Phillips third , Bob Klum fourth and J oe Klu m fifth. Horban later got revenge by com ing back to take th e Open Pro tro p hy dash , even ing th e grudge on th is super rac e weekend. Whiting shot off the line like a rocket wh en the Open A green ligh t appeared, followed by Shermer horn and Bob Klurn , who both were o u t to put th e stops on the AMA Pro . Martin, Church hot at All of Us Series Finale By Ga ile C hurch GARBERVILLE, CA, SEPT. 19 The champ io n sh ip race of French's Hi-Point motocross ser ies, spo n sored by All of Us , provided-high excitement, great raci n g an d spectacu lar finishes for the spec tators. In the 250cc Junior class, Don Martin (Han ) of Ri o Bell and Mickey Crenshaw (Yam) of Alderpoint dominated th e class. In th e first mota the riders traded th e lea d back and fort h, wit h Martin taking'th e mota by barely a bikelen gth. In th e second mota, it was Martin a nd Cr ensh a w again o u t in front. Martin slid out in a turn , but was instantly back up and " o n it" agai n , catchin g up with Crenshaw. The spectators went wild as the two riders came in to th e chec kered fla g in what is kn o wn in th e racing world as a photo finish . The dust clea red a nd the flaggers and lap co unters tall ied up, th e win ner was Ma r tin , bu t th e r a ci n g a b i l i ty a n d com petit io n sh owed both rider s a re to p rat e mo tocross riders . _In th e Mini 80cc class, th e J u niors, Intermed iates and Experts gave quite a show of competition a nd riding abilities. Scott Goff (Ya m) of Wh itehornjust moved up from the Beginner class and rode to two fir st place wins' in the Junior class. Don Church (Kaw ) of Rio Dell rode to two first place wins in the 80cc Expert class , but only after a slide out in a corner on the second moto put him down long enough to le t Expert Paul Lewis and Intermediates Byron Johnson and Greg Newman get by. Excitement was quite high as Church got back up and used all h is skills to catch up and pass th e three riders for his first place position. Anticipation continued to mo unt as Lewi s and Newman diced behind Church. The determination on each rider's part could clearly be seen in the expertly way both were handling their bikes. Keezer held a p erfect score co mi ng into the final check, but underestimated the ti me n ecessary to cross the river at the en d a nd fin ish ed two seconds befo re his mi n ute turned. In an interesting a ppro ach to accom moda tin g th e A, Band C riders, a figure-eigh t loo p was run with both groups starting o n opp osite halves of the loo p . Five or six riders started on each minu te with the course for A a n d B splitting off fro m th e C course a bout 100 yar ds from th e star t. O verall , the first loop was physically tough, bu t timed slow enough to stay on time. The secon d loop was less p hysically demandin g, bu t req u ired exceptionally fast rid in g to stay on time. . Pro blems on the placeme n t of a check and a reset sign ca used the C event to be disqualified as a point event, but trophies were awarded. An additional Sportsman class was added to accommodate those riders ineligible to rid e C class because of former A or B status, bu t interested in riding a shorter cou rse. Results 125 B: 1. Dick, Canadian Superbike Champ • again By Alice M acpherson WESTWOOD, B.C., CANADA, SEPT. 19 After a long season of duespaying, Steve Dick ca me back to Westwood as the 1982 Ca nadian Superbike Champio n an d underlined that titl e with a pair of wins. After an initial dice in the Superbike class, Dick gr a bbed the front o f the race firmly a nd led Rh ys H oward to the flag. Howard , who has spent the season ca m paig ni n g the AMA National tra il, rode th e well handling wheels qff of his Eddi e Lawson Rep lica Kawasaki. H e had to ri de h ard for h is seco nd place as he had on ly the power of a relatively stock en gine, after to tally blowin g o u t one cyli nder on his race mo tor at the Sea tt le P ro- Am . As if the one /two finish in Superbik e was n' t enough, Dic k and Howar d went back out in the special Gran Prix and repeated the performance for the delight of the crowd. H oward had an even better .ti me with his 250 G P Ya maha when h e led from the start and proceeded to lap most of the field . H is main pursuers wer e Da ryl Cornwell in second and Greg Mac Ra e third. MacRae lives a mere 425 mil es from the track and while he doesn 't ma ke all of th e rac es, he a lso doesn 't seem to su ffer from lack of pract ice. An early cra sh in practice p laced Gary Goodfell ow out tem porarily. Exhibiting the resilance that he is known for, he was back out riding to take first in th e 750cc Pro du ction class and clinch th e title in a battle where he was crossing Katanas wi th Nick Defago . Ch uck McAvoy holeshot the Formula S race on h is Golden Wre nch Cycle Repair H on da 500. He was fo llo wed by Kurt Sager on his Yamaha, Alle n Yarrow, Mark Yarrow and Nick T heraux. McAvoy bega n moving away fro m the rest of the pack immedi ately. Kurt was able to keep McAvoy in sigh t, but cou ld not get closer than 10 Dikelen gths.
