Lewis, Sanchez turn on at OTDunes By Bob Alloy VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 19 Great su n ny weather welcomed the Old Timer Association at the I n d ian Dun es Sh ado w Glen n track and there were 41 O ld Timers on ha nd to take advantage of all the excitement and fun that motocross offers. Blackie Lewis started things off in style with a holeshot Iead in the Masters class that kept him in front for a first place finish.lJynn McGraw (Hus) came in second. In moto two, Blackie took an early lead and held it for four laps, then Dennis Rosenberg flew by and took over.the lead and won. . Junior Master Dan Sanchez won the top honors in both of his motos by plowing through and over all obstacles faster than anyone else. George Spearing took a second in moto one and Buzz Moeller took second in moto two. Expert Gabe Gutierrez was in his usual state of excellence and pulled in another win. Bob Beasley did some fast moving for seven laps and was rewarded with second place. The second moto began with Gabe taking the holeshot and was out there ready to win another moto, but then Bob De Miranda appeared in the final stretch, and at the turn it was Gutierrez in the bushes and De Miranda on the track continuing on to greatness and first place. Gabe restarted and had to settle for second place. Amateur Danny Drew did some good things out there. He took both wins despite a midpack start each moto. Novice John Leisner didn't mess around out there; he snatched up first in moto one and then another first in moto two, and that's the best you can do. Results 39 . MASTER: 1. Blackie Lewis (Yam); 2. VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 17 The" 1982 season of racing on the Indian Dunes Mini track came to an end tonight. It was without a doubt the busiest night of the year for this park because th e AME hosted a Fox Hunt and Summer Blow-Out even t. All of th e riders were well taken car e of tonight and throughout the season by th e sponsors who donated prizes to make it all worthwhile. Kal-Gard deserves recognition for handing out many of . their great lubrication products. There were several great battles going on during the season and lately both Troy Cline and Rob Sassen have been "putting on a show. These two are probably the fastest riders on the all-minicycle track. Cline had trouble during the first moto of the 80 Stock Junior 12-and-over class when the bikes took off the line. Someone crowded into him and Troy went down before the double jumps. He was in fourth when he picked up his Yamaha and had to work hard to catch up, but couldn't pass the other riders and had to settle for fourth. Rob Sassen had it made in first place with John Sawitskas in second and Abba Zabba Abbott running in th ird . Sass en wrapped the contest up in the final m o to and this time, Cline ha d a better shot at the leader as nobody knoc ked him down. Cline had to follow Sassen a nd could n't get doseenough to pass. Sawitskas was shoved back to fourth behind Abbott. O verall it was Sassen, Cline, Abbott and Sawitskas. Sassen clinched the 80 Modified Junior 12-and-over title as well. Hames still hauls atCMCAscot By Maureen Lee GARDENA, CA, SEPT. 16 Pete Hames was back the big money winner at tonight's Continental Motosports Corporation Short Track. In the little bike division, young Joey Wilson gave it all he had, showing real good style, but a rider doesn't have much chance when all the others are on fixed up 80s and 125s...good riding, Joey. The pair of 125s ridden by Rex - Wessels and Ruben Malaguerero had a grand old time with Mini rider Matt Stoutenburg. Matt led some of the time, but just didn't have those few extra ponies to keep in front. Greg Nelson won the 250cc Pro class with two straight wins. He fairly put it to the troops in the first round, with Jeff Runyan and Jason Bell quite a way behind him. Young Bell was giving the veteran Runyan all he wanted for a while. Pete Hames won both rounds of 500cc Pro. Nigel Gale tucked in behind him for a couple of laps first race, but then another Pro, Eddie San Roman, slid into the second spot. Behind the two up front, a good go went on for a while between Galeand another Pro, Dan Kane. It won 't be long before Gale gets a move up in class. Second round, Hames shot away again , and San Roman and Kane went at it hard and heavy for the rest of th e race with Eddie taking a tumbl e and loosing his second place spot and Kan e taking second. It seemed a bit strange running th e onl y two Open Pros together, but th ey did and Pete Hames beat Chris Cannon twice. Results 125 INT: 1. Rex We ssels (Yam). 125 JR : 1. Ruben M alaguarero (Hon). Werner chases TurneratAscotMX By Tom Corley GA RDENA, CA, SEPT . 15 A specia l Pro points nig h t brought out a few visi ti n g riders, but neither th e consiste n t or the visiting riders could hold back Ro n Turner from taking yet another 125, 250 and 500cc P ro class sweep in CMC motocross at Ascot. P er hap s a bounty on Ro n Turner would attract a few factory riders and break up his domination? Till then, Turner remains the king at Ascot during the 1982 season. Darryl Werner from South Africa gives Turner a good match race eve~y week in the 125cc Pro class. Werner IS doing his best to defeat Turner, but usually loses his lead. This was the case in the first moto when he led Turner by one or two bikelengths. On the last lap, these two riders rounded the sweeper after the. TT jump and Turner cut to the inside and gained a bikelength over Werner. However, when Turner reached the next corner with the barrel, he overshot it slightly and Werner h oo ked the inside line. It was a drag race for the remaining couple hundred feet to the finish line, but when they reached that point the officials called it in . Turner's favor. Werner placed second ahead of Tim Lunde and Tim Shelton. The final rnoto didn 't compare with the opening moto as the leading riders held their positions to the end. Turner got the jump and avoided a battle with Werner who was held back in third behind Lunde. It was a Honda rally, 1-2-3. Turner's I-I tally earned him the top money over Lunde, Werner and Shelton. Johnson big CMC ST money winner By Maureen Lee GARDENA, CA, SEPT. 9 Jeff Johnson took home the big share of the payback tonight as the Continental Motosports Corporation's short track season winds down. The charging youngster on his hot Honda took the 500cc Pro class ' two straight. First race, Pete Hames and Larry Earhart broke into tur~ one first followed by Johnson, Eddie San Ro m a n and Dan Kane. Johnson then jammed Earhart with San Ro ma n going right along with him. J ohnso~ started pushing Hames hard, saw his chance to nip inside on turn four and took it. Hames rode hard trying to regain the lead but couldn't do it. Nex t race Joh n so n had it from the ' begin n in g with Hames right o n his rea r wheel. J eff left the door open a co uple of times, and Pete go t th rough, but so m eho w J oh nso n was always a ble to get by h im again a nd arrive at the checkered flag first. Mike Kirby wo n the 250cc Pro , blowing 'em all off in the first race, and having his bike quit just as he took the flag in the second. Beh in d him each time were Greg Nelson, Keith Guthery and Larry Earhart who .swap ped the other places around. In Open Pro, Johnson and Hames on a pair of Triumphs went at it like a pair of bulldogs, back and ~orth each gaining the upper hand briefly, but unable to hold onto it until the end. First round it was Pete who won, but Jeff won the second while Mike Kirby and Greg Nelson settled out the other.two places. , . The 500cc and 250cc Intermediates and Juniors ran together, and showed the stands a good race. Mike Hixon (500) won the first round with James Morris (250) glued on his rear wheel. Try as he might, Jim couldn't find a way around, and running right with them was Kevin Clayton on another 500. They all caught up with a slower rider on the last lap, heading for home in the north turn, making things interesting for a few seconds. Hixson was the winner. . Next time out, Morris arid his 250 got the drop on them, and he led it all the way with Hixson eventually losing the second spot to Kevin Clayton, although, in class points, Kevin was the winner. • Results 12 5 INT: 1.
