Anthony Pasqualotto aviates en route to SNDR HS win . Pasqualotto'tops SNDR HS Kelly strikes gold at Prospectors HS By Wayne Gales By Shirley Upp G O O DSPRING S, NV, SEPT. 19 RED MO UNTAIN , CA, SEPT. 12 The race for the number one Open plate has narrowed down to a near tie between Anthony Pasqualotto and Jack Johnson 28 as Pasqualotto took his Vega s Cycle/ Ma ico West 490 to an overall victory in the Southern Nevada Desert Racers hare scrambles. Tony held a strong four minute margin over second pl ace " Koo l" Kevin Welch at the finish , while Butch Laswell brought in a comfortable third. At th e start it was Jack Johnson , celebrating his 30th birthday, with a commanding smoke bomb run and early lead, with Pasqualotto and Welch hot on his tail. When Jack 's in front, he's almost impossible to pass, and he looked like a strong prospect fo the win, until a flat tire slowed the Mint 400 winner, and th e loss of the rear brake assembly forced him to stop after two laps. With Johnson out of the picture, it was Pasqualotto's day , riding a strong race that had him gaining time over the field at the finish. In the 250cc class it was Marv Chapman breezing to the class win and fourth overall. Honda of Las Vegas-sponsored Steve Beck held onto second for three laps until Glenn Wischmeyer caught and passed him in the pi ts. Wischmeyer held onto second at th e finish wi th Beck taking third a nd L arry Job br inging in fourth . The 125cc class lead changed a t least four times until Scott Morr is nailed down the victory. Billy Hill took h is Suzuki to an early lead u ntil he sca ttered his transmissio n, which turned over the front running spot to Husky-mounted Daryl Fol ks, who was riding his first event since a broken leg sidelined him early in the year. Folks stopped to hel p a downed rider and Morris, also H usky-mounted, got by for the win. In a fresh start area 10 miles north of Red Mountain, Tom Kelley (H us) proved to all h e hadn 't forgot how it was done and he took the overall win in the Prospectors D-37 hare scram bles. Wh en th e banner dropped, a very anxious group were on their wa y and it was Dan Ashcraft (H us) tak ing a nice lead a m ile past th e bomb. Lee Scheffers (H on) came next with Kelly running th ird. Howard McCasland (Hon), a 250cc ace, was leading this hard charging class a nd running fourth. Chuck Steams (H on) was fifth followed by first Open AMA rider John McCormick. It was Brett Howell in total charge of the C bike cla ss at seventh aft er a great bomb run . In the Novice Beginner start th e spectators were in for a treat as we could see the riders going out across the valley. It was 250cc rider Brett Shaner turning in a spectacular ride, taking the lead and never backing off. After one loop of this 33 mile course it was hard charging Ashcraft still in the lead, but h is great ride was cut short not far into the second loop when he developed bike problems. After much difficulty, Kelly had finally gotten by Scheffers and took over th e lead by the bomb going out on the second loop. Third coming into home chec k was Scheffers. Mc Casland having a grea t ride tod ay on h is H onda was still first 250cc and fourth overall. Moving up to take over fifth was Dave Wasden . Kelly, with the lead well in hand, didn't have much time to relax because there were many Novice and Beginner riders to lap. But being the pro he is Kell y took the overall win. Second was Scheffers and bei ng the special guy he is he said, "I ha d a grea t ride today, lots of fun, but Kelly had a better one." Third and taking another first in the 250ccclass was McCasland. Fourth was another one of our top riders, Steams. The C bi ke class went to H owell at fifth overall. Howell said Tom Elias caught him on the second loop and these two diced until Elias got off. Finishi ng right behind H owell was Elias taki ng second in class. First O pen Amateur af ter cras hing o n seco nd loop, Ken O via tt didn 't slow down and took first in class for hi s mechanic Rick So wma and spo n sor BC Cycle. Even after a very bad sta rt and a slipping clutch it was Ron Shuler taking second O pen Amateur spot. First 250cc Amateur was hard riding Kurt Mann with D. Daiement taking second. T aking fir st 250cc Vet was J im Bringhurst wit h Wes Anderson J r. in for the second spot. Ace C bike rider Dan Theel turn ed in another su per ride to take first C Amateur today. Taking second was John Braas ch . Shaner, a fter an outstanding ride leading from start to fin ish, took the overall Novice win on h is 250cc. Second 250cc Novice and second overa ll was Ch arles Nuckes. In the Beginner race Marty Stoner took the overall honors with David Burson second. Third and first C bike was T om Wilhelm. T aking fourth and first 250cc wa s J eff Moffat. Hard riding Eric Doughert y and Eric Dorl er took fifth and six th. In th e women 's race it was Diane Holem an taking first. J o lene Payn e managed to get around J u ne El ias to take second with Eli as th ird. Tripes/Smith take FRT's Notorious Dawg team race By Richie King OCOTILLOWELLS, CA,SEPT.12 Hotshot Pros Marty Tripes and Marty Smith joined forces and lapped up to third place in tak ing the overall win in the Fudp uck er Ra cing Team's Notorious Dawg team race. Wa tching Tripes rid e is lik e watching an artist at work. H e li tera lly flows across th e terrain, more like a balletdancer than a dirt bi ke racer. T eammate Marty Smith is .also ultra-smooth in act ion. Smith o n Honda, Tripes on Yamaha 'garnered first 250cc Experts and first overall. Second overall and second 125cc Experts were the flying Mattox brothers, Bill and Tom. Third overall and third 250cc Expert was the team of Ro bbie Nolan (Yam) and Gordon Clark (Yam ). First I25cc Experts and fifth overall were Terry Strauwald and Don Mathews (Yam ). The first Open Amateur team of Steve Basin and Todd Kennedy (Yam) just barely beat out the first Open Expert team of Morgan Malocco and Mik e Maze (H on), finishing sixth and sevent h overall in tha t order. Rounding out the top 10 were th e teams of Pat Lowrie and Kirk He ster (Suz), first 125ccAmateur; Ed Mundy (Suz) and J ohn Pet erson (Kaw), first Vet Expe rt; and Pa u l Palmer an d Scott An derson on Yam ah as too k second 125 Expert and 10th overall. First Novice team s in class were: Charlie Ch apman and David Cox, first Open Nov ice; Brett Nelson and James Hayes, first 250ccNovice; James Tucker and Bob Pippin , firs t 125cc Novice; Al Wrigh t and Ji m Marcom first Vet Novice; and First Senior Novice was Ironman Ted Scott. Webb, Palenske tie for CRC Gully Whomper Enduro By Jim Bowman L UC ER NE, CA, SEPT. 19 D irt B ik e magazine 's Tom Webb and Grant Palenske both lost 35 seconds at the Gully Whomper enduro today to tie for th e Open AA and overall win. P romot er / course designer Larry .Langley joked a nd said he would cut th e trophy in half, but would not go to the last tie-breaker score, as AMA scorers do , to determine a lone overall win ner. The Gully Whomper was run in comfortable tem peratures in the desert inside of Lucerne Valley over two separate 30+ m ile loops. The first loop was easy for the better riders with onl y one special test, and that one short a t that. The trickiest part of th is test was a one-minute reset in the middle that Langley said was to baffle timekeepe rs; it worked on a few. The second loop was more challenging for the bett er riders and used gullys an d washes to try to slow th e riders eno ug h to tak e points in the 30 mph sections. Only Webb, Palenske and 250A class winner Robert Smith were abl e to co mp lete the course wi thout picking up a full point anywh ere. None o f the top 20 riders scored more than one point, however. H arry Keast wa s th e top Open AA Sen ior and pl aced fourth overall with a score of 1.59, while Steve Jensen was th e top B rider , turning in a score of 1.82 to top the 125 B class for riders under age 16; Jensen placed eighth overall.
