Dubb Ferrell and Rick Miller had to do it twice in the Match Race since the first one was a draw. Ferrell proved himself the victor. In th e Division Three ma in after two restarts, Shan e McDonald got out first , with Robby Stone in second. Robert Little lost his third place slot and Joe Kriesberg held it for the duration as McDonald took a clean win. In th e Second Division main, Victor Robledo go t out first, with T im McCasland second, followed by Ron Blanton, then it got con fusing. While I watched McCasland lose a wheelie down the back straight, Chris Reichardt flipped Mike Bast's back-up bike in turn one. Blanton went out in that mess and that left Robledo in front, Ken Bencheck second, and the mighty Jim Turner third. And that's the way they finished. The Handicap Main event was won handily by none other than Denny Scopellite. Twenty-two year old Scopellite in his second First Division ride at Costa Mesa, held off pressure by Keith Chrisco, and then later Dave Simms. Before this year, it had been five years since Denny had been racing speedway. The night was far from over with the Scratch Main coming up. At the start the tape broke, the race was redflagged and it was determined that Mike Bast was the offender. The race was restarted without Bast and Dubb Ferrell shot out fast for the lead, flipped it high side and Alan Christian did a beautiful lay down. Dubb complained of a hole in the track between turns three and four and all three restarted wi th Christian first this time and Ferrell behind. On the next lap, Shawn McConnell . Sandon~ smokes San Bernardino By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 22 John Sandona rode a brand new center-port Jawa to his third Scratch main win of the season at John LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway tonigh 1. Sandona (Cody Products/Super Seer ), who also won his other two Scratch rides tonight, came from the pole in the main to lead Alan Christian (STP/ Super Seer Good), Dubb Ferrell {Dean 's Independent Mazda / STP Jaw) and Mike Faria (Shoei/ Cody Products/Jones Goggles Jaw) into turn one. Ferrell slipped by Christian for an instant in turn two, only to drop back into third on the back chute. Christian, who was defying all odds by riding full throttle about six inches from the crashwall, pulled along side Sandona coming out of two on the second tour. It. looked like the STP rider was going to capture the lead, but the night belonged to Sandona and he fought off his challenger in turn three. Sandona wen t the rest of the way unchallenged and came home six bikelengths ahead of Christian, Ferrell and Faria. Denny Scopellite showed some " H ot Moves " by taking his third IMS Handicap main of the season. Scopellite's partner on the 20, Dennis Bransford (Home Video Jaw) led at the first corner with Scopellite (Hot Moves/SBE Wes) shooting by for the lead in turn two. Bransford pulled even at the end of the lap with Scopellite again pulling away in turn two . Dave Sims (Michael 's Lapidary Godd) demoted Bransford to third on lap three. Sims tried desperately to cu t down Scopellite's lead over laps four and five, but was forced to settle for second. Christian and Faria went at it for third on the final lap with Christian getting the show spot by inches at the checkered. In his first-ever night of IMS Second Division racing, "Super Fast" Mark Dwyer (Jaw) made a shambles of the proceedings by winning both of his races, including a half straightaway victory in the main. Dwyer was the only rider off the zero and easily ran away from the pack, despite a clutch that was quickly going sour, to win over New Zealander Chris Martin (Schu te Jaw) and Robin Bourgeous (Wes). . Trace Willis picked up a $100 bonus donated by Infield Ambulance for his second IMS Third Division main win of the season. Willis passed early leader Robby Stone (Jaw) and then cruised the final two laps to win over Jimmy Busby (Busby Racing Godd) and speedway's "Favorite Fireman" Mike Dwyer (Jaw). ' Oscar Roberts of San Diego rode his Hog to a wire-to-wire win in the Harley Davidson Match race. Roberts went unchallenged after his first corner in the popular, annual IMS event. The 15th annual California State Championship brings down the curtain on the 1982 IMS season on Sept. 29. All of the top California stars will be on hand along with Lance King and Bobby Schwartz, who will be flying in from England to vie for the prestigious title. • Result s SCRATCHMAIN : 1.
