Mamola wins 500cc GP ,finale in Germany HOCKENHEIM, ~EST GERMANY, SEPT. 26 Randy Mamola (Suz) won his first GP of the season in front of 100,000 spectators as the '82 GP road race season concluded in Germany. Virginio Ferrari (Suz) was second and Loris Reggiani (Suz) ran third. Freddie Spencer (Hon) led most of the race but fell in the third to last corner when Franco Uncirii (Suz) ran into him. Spencer broke his collarbone and sustained a concussion and was admitted to a hospital for observation. Kenny Roberts (Yam) attended the event but did not race. The final 500cc GP points tally had Uncini in first followed by Graeme Crosby (Yam) and Spencer, then Roberts and Barry Sheene (Yam), who were tied for fourth. Martin Herweh (Yam) won the 350cc GP over Anton Mang (Kaw). Mang took the 350cc World Championship, the last one to be awarded as the class will be eliminated next year. Mang also topped the 250cc GP, with the title in that class going to Jean-Louis Tournadre (Yam). . Eugenio lazzarrini (Gar) won the 50cc GP and the World Championship in that class. Stephan Dorflinger (Kre) was second for the day. The sidecar team of Schwaerzel/Huber (Yam) finished second to Biland/Waltisperg (Yam), b,ut Schwaerzel/Huber locked up the Sidecar World Championship. Complete coverage next week. Springsteen/Graham Ascot half mile shootout rained out GARDENA, CA, SEPT. 25 The AMA Winston Pro finale at Ascot park was rained out of its original date of Sept. 25. After holding the crowd until 1 0 p.m., the decision was made to reschedule the race for the following afternoon of Sept. 26 where it was rained out again. The race was rescheduled for Monday Sept. 27. Weather permitting, the race will run at the original time of 8 p.m. Should the race be rained out again, it is believed that the race will be rescheduled for Friday Oct. 1. Look for complete coverage next week. 57th International Six Days Enduro Czechs rule Czechoslovakia, USA second POVASZKA BYSTRICA, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, SEPT. 25 After six days of tough trail which saw only 119 finishers out of 307 starters, the Czechoslovakian Trophy Team placed first in the ISDE. The American team placed second, the best finish ever posted in our country's history of participation. East Germany topped the Vase Team competition, while the USA squad ran fourth. American Silver Vase Team member Chuck Miller (Hus) DNF on Day Four with chain problems. On Day Five, American Trophy Team member Wally Wilson (Hus) went out when he injured his left forearm. The Czech team also lost a rider on Day Five. ' Only one American, Ed Lojak (Hus), finished this year's event on gold. Four silver and eight bronze medals were awarded to other American riders. Twenty-five Americans started and 13 finished. Complete coverage next week. , Suzuki-mounted privateer Dave Hollis took the win in the opening round of the AMA's Trans-USA MX Series at Spring Creek MX Park in Millville, MN. Competing in three 20-minute motos, Hollis turned in a 1-2-1 score to defeat Huksy's Bill Grossi (4-1-3) and Kawasaki Team Green rider Billy Liles (2-5-2). Complete coverage next week. 2 An AMA board of appeal overturned the Pocono disqualification of Team Honda Superbike rider Mike Baldwin. The Pocono winner was initially disqualified for use of an " u na pproved" 16-inch Goodyear front slick. Details on the appeal board's ruling wer e sketchy as of presstime, but the reinstatement of Baldwin's Pocono win now leaves him in contention for the Superbike title with two rounds left to run. The revised point standings find Kawasaki's Eddie Lawson leading with 125, followed by teammate Wayne Rainey (103) and Baldwin (102). . ~ Miles Baldwin, Jon Woo and Harry Klinzmann, the top three placers in the Caesars Palace/Coors Formula One road race, really received the red carpet treatment .after the ' race was over. The trio were guests at Sunday evening's Diana Ross show, where they were introduced to the audience. Although Ascot 's season-ending AMA/Winston Pro Series half mile was postponed by weather, the Winston Pro Series awards banquet was held as scheduled in Long Beach on Sunday night. Although no 'money was distributed, it was 'announced that the 1983 Camel Pro Series point fund will be increased to $175,000 to providean incentive for racersto continue competing in the series in spite of the difficult economic climate. And in response, one of the highlights of the evening was when Gary Scott presented a Bell helmet autographed by this year's top 15 riders to R.j. Reynolds' Ralph Seagraves. The most stirring moments of the Winston Pro. award banquet centered around the first public appearance of injured road racer Bruce Hammer. The Team Hammer leader received a standing ovation from the crowd of nearly 500, and then master of ceremonies Dave Despain related a conversation with Hammer about his intent to obtain a van equipped with hand controls so that he could get around. Before Despain could continue, he was interrupted by Seagraves, who promised Hammer a check from R.J. Reynolds for $2000. Before the night was over, AMA professional competition manager Mike DiPrete pledged $500 from his unused budget, AMA Grand National Champ Mike Kidd chipped in $500 from his own pocket, and Chuck Palmgren announced that Hammer would receive another $2000 on behalf of Linda Montgomery and KRW. A tip of the Wealey duckbill to all of the above for their generosity and humanity; it was truly one of the motorcycle sport's finest moments. Dunlop Tire Company, a division of Dunlop Tire and Rubber Corporation, announced it is voluntarily recalling ,39,462 rear motorcycle tires, sold both as original equipment on new motorcycles and for replacement _ 'fitrnent. Dunlop stated that these tires are customarily fitted to Honda GLIIOO Gold Wing, Interstate and Aspencade motorcycles. Tires being recalled are size MI40/90-16 Dunlop KI27C Qualifier rear motorcycle tires, bearing D.O.T. serial identification numbers DAIKMAI331 , -341, -351, -361, -371, -381, -391, -401, -411, -421, -431, -441, -451, -461, -471, -481, -491, -501, -511, -012, -022, -032, -042, -052, -062,-072,-082,-092,-102,-112, -122, -132, -142, -152. The company stated that a very small percentage of these tires could have an internal construction defect which, under sustained high tire load, could result in potentially dangerous tire failure. Maintenance of tire inflation pressure and load in accordance with the motorcycle owner's manual and tire information placard will greatly reduce the chance of such failure occurring before a replacement can be made. Dunlop is notifying all known owners by mail. Others who have any of these tires are asked to return them to the dealer from whom the tires were acquired either as original equipment on a new motorcycle or as replacement tires, or to the nearest Dunlop motorcycle tire sales outlet. The tires will be replaced without charge up to 90 days from date of notification. Thereafter, replacement will be made under the terms of Dunlop's standard limited warranty. Rain also caused the postponement 'of the Sept. 25-26 AMA Pro-Am road race at Moroso Raceway Park in West Palm Beach, FL. The race is rescheduled for Oct. 9-10, the weekend after Dayto-na's Pro-Am race. All of the factory Superbike teams plan to attend the West Palm Beach round, which is now the final round of the AMA Superbike Championship Series. The 1982 AMA Trans-USA MX Series has been cut to three rounds. The last two rounds of the original five which were to run in Colorado and California, have been cancelled. "Ed Youngblood (executive director of the AMA) called the promoters of the last two events and received the cancellations," said Carroll Chandler, AMA motocross and hillclimb professional competition manager. "We realized those promoters had some serious problems (with the conflicting CMC Trans-Cal Series) and we accepted the cancellations - there's no problem with the credibility of those promoters." Southern California AMA Speedway Rep George Rich stopped by to let everyone know that the entry blanks for the Nov. 5 Ascot Long Track are available by calling Ben Foote at Ascot (213/321-5323) or George at 714/635-6568. Interested riders should contact Rich ' at the above number. , Three public workshops in Sacramento, San Diego and Los Angeles will be held in October to discuss a statewide off highwayvehicle trails plan. The plan is being developed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and the E.D.A.W. corporation. This is the second set of such workshops. , The first were held in July.
