Steve Naumans' H o nda pulled th e holeshot of the l 25cc Pro class as Sco tt Kell er and Kimo Casey of Walnut Creek Honda bot h tried to push h im o u t on la p one. Brett Stevens began ta charge through th e p ack next, as Casey and Silhanek stre tchedtheir lead . Turn for ' turn , th ey mark ed off the laps u ntil Casey made a tight ins ide turn too tight an d Silhan ek flash ed by. Nauman passed Cas ey as h e p u lled o nto the track a nd Brett Steven s conti nued h is charge all the wa y to second pl ace by th e chec kere d. Kimo took command again in mota two as Silhanek p ulled in for the n u m ber two posi tion. Cra ig Christain and Stevens rounded ou t th e top four as Silhanek bobbed and weaved to get by Case y again. Cas.ey ~idn ' t let Silhanek get as close thi s nrn e, but dropped to fourth with a fla.t rear tire a nd Silhanek took another first: Stevens and Keller got second and th ird. Bryan Wargo's Honda holesh ot th e 250cc Pro class as Silhanek, Phil Oveland and Doug McRae jostled for positions. Oveland took Silhanek and Wargo on the same in sid e turn . Sil. hanek moved to second when Wargo crashed, and set his sights on Oveland. But Oveland overshot the next corner, giving clean sailing to Sil hanek and Mckae, The same four went at it again in rnoto two, only in a different order. Wargo led for several laps till he slid out on chicken coop corner. Silhanek moved up on McRae on lap six and O veland continued to pace himself as he had los t his rear brake. Don Wilson rode off with th e first ro und of Open Intermediate on his Dick Man n Special , but co ul dn' t get it all goin g th e ri gh t wa y in th e seco nd ro und as G reg Raub ca me back fro m a get-off to win th e second roun d. Consisten cy paid off for Keit h Adams on the Sou th Ci ty KT M . though , as his 2-2 was good enough for th e overall. J ohn Wells was seco nd (3-4) a n d third was Wilson (1-6). Larr y Wosick and Rod Smith were having one heck of a dice in the first .round of the 250cc Pro battle with Smith doing the cat ching portion on his Cancilla Tensioner RM. Rod has been smoking the doors here of la te and was working up and catching well when the two speedsters overcame a back marker. Wosick passed well, but Smith got caught just about the time he would have made th e move for a pass. While he was dis gusted with himself for a minor mistake , he came back in the second round with a vengeance and won, taking the ove rall wtih Wosick committed to second on th e last lap. Robbie Webster, with his Zoo m Cycle spe cial, was tops in th e 250cc Intermed iat e class with aces a pair over Chuck Barker with two twos and Chris Mitchell third wi tha 4-3. Ron Dougl as got th e holeshot of the 250cc Jun iors wi th a 1-2 overall win, wh ile Mi ke Fruzen ha d to play ca tch up in the first round, winning the second moto and second overall with a 4-1. Track sponsors Argyll Park Pro mo tion s and Boss MX had p repa red th e track wi th rice hulls which improved it immensely . In mo to o ne Ti m my Aston (Kaw) grabbed a clean hol eshot followed by T ony L ucente an d Andy Tresser. Asto n hel d th e lead while H anford Yama ha 's J on Ne lson moved into second. Eddie Mi nton (Suz) moved passed Steve Vlahos for third. In moto two , Asto n got the hol eshot again wit h Cor y Ca ntaloupi (Yam) an d Vlahos (Suz). By lap th ree Vla hos moved to seco nd. J on Nelson, recove ri n g from an early fall , passed Scott Rebuck (H o n) and Cantaloupi for th ird. H i Point-sponsored Danny T urner (Suz) sta rted off the 250cc Expert class by grabbing the holeshot with Sierra/ Answer Product's Rodney Smith and Honda 's Larry Wosick in second and third. Suzuki rider Dave Coupe moved into th ird and Wosick into second after Smith got off on th e uphill. At the end of th e moto it was Turner, Wosick, Smith and Jim Ell is (Hon ). Turner pulled the holeshot again ' .in the second rnoto with Joey Schlag (KT M) and Smith follo wing closel y. By th e halfway point, Wos ick took over second, Smith third and Schlag fo urt h. The Neva da Old T ime rs worked hard in prep aring th e track. It was sm oo th a t the beg inn ing of this two da y cha m p io ns h ip an d held up well th roughout the weekend. Ma n n used the smoothness of th e track to hi s advan tage, power-sliding through most of the smooth turns and making daring passes from hi s usual middle ofthe pack start. Mann's seventh place first moto. was. d.isappointing an d Bob White fin ish ed first with Gordy Oahs second. But for the next five motos, Mann was the first man to the checker flag, beating Bob White by two points and win ning the Masters class. Gordy Oahs did not start on Sunday and Ken Shandrow took third. The turnout was excellent and at the awards banquet the sponsoring . club had a surprise.
