H uffman Wri gh t Logging/ Yam) took a sp ecta cu lar come-from-beh ind race in the Open P ro main to overtake TT Regiona l wi n ner Scott Miller (Trak Tak/ O u t Fro n t Number Pla teslTri), who came back to win a spectator/ ri der donated purse race for th e top money over McCullough. Miller was still stoked fro m wi nni ng the biggest race of th e season just two week s ago and was out to do the same at th e start of the Open Pro mai n event, p u lling the scratch ove r McC u llo ugh , Steve Kendig (T ri) an d Ron Adams. It soon became th e battle of the ba rs as yet another of the Jun ior/ Expert slug fests for th e 1-23-4 sp o ts ca me about, with McCullo u gh losing second after a so urin g mo tor to No vice sensation H arsh a , who went into the runner-u p position a n eighth lap down . H arsh a close d in on first at a spectacu lar ra te with two la ps to go , got Miller for the lea d go ing in to turn one an d kep t the hot Junior a t bay for th e remainder of the race. Harsha got the first p lacepayoff, Miller was seco nd and McCullough stayed in th ere, nursing his Triumph for a narrow third; Ada ms was fourth and Ken dig fifth . The Open A main wa s o u t to set the same tempo, but just didn 't quite have the same da zzle the O pen Pro event had. McCullough wasted no time boogieing to th e lead and was hounde d by Ken dig an d Ma rty Zir bel (Yam ). McCullo ugh showed them a distant view all th e wa y to the last la p flag whe n the AMA speedster again was forced into a trailing position when th e mo tor soured, giv ing Kendi g th e win and Zirbel second. The 250cc Pro main was a 12 lap ba ttle with Blagg collecting the holesh ot over McC u llo ug h and Clark in tu rn one, but after that, McC u llough took a co m manding lead to gi ve th e specta tors on hand their on ly ch ance of seeing th e expert en ro ute to a main even t w in this evenin g.McC u llo u gh had Blagg to deal with , but he ld off all attempts to the flag for first money; Blagg was second and Clark th ird for the fin al payoff. Key showboats at Hills Ferry ST By Bill Spencer NEWMAN, CA, SEPT . 5 Ma rk Key ca m e off the big winner in th e seco nd round of Labor Day action at the Westside Eagles sh ort track at Hills Ferry Speedway. A reverse order of mai ns saw Key run off with the 500cc Expert event with Jeff J ohnson doing th e trailing. Mike Kunsman kept Mik e Kirb y a t ba y with Danny McDonnell in for fifth over Rod Sullivan and Mik e Hayward. Johnson is sometimes o n the Pro circuit, while Kirby is one of the kids who won at Houston back in February. The 250cc Expert race was a barnDurning thri lle r with five going for the lead at each tu rn in g point. Mark Key and Bruce J ohnson led out the 15-lapper with Chad Felicio, Rog er Thompson , Mi ke Kir by and Joe Knight chas ing. Chris Carr ro de around most o f the troops and was running third on the bu bble near th e halfway mark. Just past lap 11, Carr went to make his move and was riding the outside slick line in what looked like a real good attempt to make a pass stick. J ust about that time, up 1" Sanc hez threw his Yamaha away down the back straight a nd Mike Arthur had to h it the bike to miss PJ and the ensuing flip closed the track lines down. Carr ca me off the first turn WFO and riding about two feet off of J oh nso n and Key who . were d ialed in fo r the line. As he exited turn number two , h e had to go wide off the track to miss bikes, bodies and debris and starter Leroy Baker wisely shut th e whole opera tion off with a che~kered flag. Anderson, Eaton match and win at Mulkey ORV By Bria n Barnes McM IN NV I L L E, OR , SEPT. 5 T he northwest's hottest motocross ri der co ntinued his domination of the area by sweeping four straig h t motos from his competition today at Mulkey ORV Park. J im L. Anderson (Yam support/MX Fox / Kal-Gard/ ATK/Dallas Baker P ro ducts) has been almost unbeatable for the past couple of months. Besides sweeping both th e 125 and 250cc classes, Anderson was able to run against O pen Pro winner Eric Eaton (Husky USA /Maico-H usk y NW / Answer Products) in a special dash for cash. The race consisted of three laps backwards on Mulkey's course, with An derson 's 250 holding off Eaton for the entire race a n d pi cking up some extra spendi ng money for his efforts. The first 250cc moto saw KTM/ A-I Cycle's Rod ney Keller lead Anderson for three laps u n til the Yamaha ace swe pt by to take the lead and motor away for the win . Tim Michlitsch ran in secon d until mechanical woes dropped him fro m the race, allowing Keller to regai n second and Chris Carr (8) sets up Aaron Hill in Hills Ferry heat racing . sta y th ere till the fla g. When the first rno to of the 125cc class blasted off the line, Hondamounted Kevin White took th e holeshot. Anderson was n't far beh ind th ough , a nd by the end o f the first lap had gain ed th e lead a n d was long gone to th e checkered. Chris has 10 Na tional titles, including two mi n i champ ionships and is well on h is way to th e big time.
