Both Lew is and Surratt are members of T eam Green and they, along with Le e Bea ver and Craig Ayers (t he two 80cc J u ni or division winners) , were all mounted on Kawasaki minis. With only a few races worth of experien ce at this track, Shane Trittler took h is Suzuki ou t front of the Intermediates with the start of the first moto. Trittler was being ta iled by Kyle Lewis wh o p assed the leader after the crash wall jumps. Lewis now had control of the race wi th Trittler in second, Da n nyBarnett in th ird and Ro b Sass en placing fourth. Once more, Trittl er had the holesho t when the second rno to got underway, and Lewis was righ t behind him. Lewis already knew where to pass Trittler aft er th e firs t moto race, and he attempted to pass him again a t that point and was successful. Lewis had it made with a n eas y lead while T rittler lo st second place. He moved up again , but ra n in to another rider and fell again. Keith Morabito grabbed th e runner-u p p osition with Trittler way back in fifth place. Two firsts earned Kyle Lewi s his first win ever at Ascot. Norman again at SRA Carlsbad GP By Jeannette Fis her CARLSBAD, CA, AUG. 29 The morning of Southland Racing Association's Carlsbad GP, showed the Vets with little change throughout the ra ce; Dave Aldana led the wa y with Bill Manley and Ed Ellis behind. Lynn McGraw followed Ellis closely, but Ellis could not hold McGraw back , a n d McGraw soon took over the th ird place position. At the finish , the order was Aldana, Manley, McG ra w a nd Peter Bryk . John Perry a nd Ri ck Sowman ran a close rac e for first a nd seco nd Amateurs. Lynn McGraw sh ow ed better in his second race of th e da y as h e took th e overall in the Senior' s race . It was n' t easy for McGraw as h e had to ca tch Charlie Conway (No rt h County Hon ), who took the early lead . Russ Robinson (Ya m ) held th e third place position from start to fini sh , he also claimed first 200cc. The 80cc class ran nex t; off th e sta rting line, and out of th e first tu rn , it was Frankie Brun dage (Ka w ) who led the pack. Amateur Gene Baldwin of Dallas Baker P rod ucts followed in hot pursuit with Keith Senn (Bellflower Yam) close behind. During the race, Brundage added little to his lead, and Senn dosed on Baldwin. At the finish it was still Brundage, Baldwin and Senn. - T h e biggest race of the da y was the 250cc class with almost 75 entries. Robert Nolin showed at the start as he took the lead , but for only a short time as he was overtaken by Randy Norman. Norman won both the 250cc and the Open class at SRA's last Carlsbad GP. Norman widen ed his lead on second place, who was Brian Manley. Craig Adams pushed Manley as he ran a close third. Norman took the overall with ease , and Manley claimed second and Adams third. The end of the first lap of th e 200cc race showed Nolin in th e lead with David McGhee (Yam ) trailing. McGhee dropped way back and Gordon Ward Jr. moved into second. Richard Suitor moved into third, a nd at the finish it was Nolin, Ward a nd Suitor. J o h n Esposito and W. Mike Jewell took first and second Amateurs in that order and almost tha t close. Craig Adams moved his Honda into the lead of the O p en class. Steele continues domination of Nevada Night MX By Wayne Gales di vid ed between Sto ck an d Modified classifications th a t ran th e ga m u t, fro m th e smallest 60cc racer to th e 80cc Experts . Indian Dunes got in on the act with a radically different International track. Sta dium Cross in th e _ desert if you will. T he Minis, as usual, were super cool, a n d it sh owed in th eir racin g. PJ- l was present to hel p anyone who needed th em , bu t in ad di tio n, ga ve ou t lubricants to th e to p ri ders in every class. O ne Mini Begirin er in p articular, Abel Gayton , ro de his h eart out for hi s sponsor - PJ- l , in both 80cc Modified and Stock classes. Bearing up under bad co ld , Gayton rall ied back from a 12th in the first Stock moto , to win th e second moto for a si x th overal l. H e re turned to th e line for th e Modifed race and simpl y bea t th e pants off th e competition, eme rgin g out in front in bo th motos for a p air of wins. Gayto n had some tough competi tion th ro ugh o ut both classes. Among th e 80cc Modified Beginners were Robert Forest , o f Ros emond Suzuki, who scor ed a smoo th 2-2 ride and Yamaha-mounted Robby Hermanek, who p ressed h ard a ll day , • with a 3-3 tally. a LAS VEGAS, NV , AU G . 28 Husqvarna- m o unted Kevin Steele m ade it eight motos in a row as h e took overall Open Pro honors in the fourth Nevada Mo tocross Association n igh t ra ce series . Steele faced h is stro ngest challenge of the series, fighti ng off a hard charge by Ma ico suppor t rider Jack Johnson. Jack lost h is clutch in the first rnoto, but made repa irs between ' races and kept Steele in sight for the en tire second moto. Kevin " Koo l Kev" Welch fin ished th ird with Tony Pasqualotto bringing in fourth. In the 250cc class, Chip Miller took the win for th e third week in a row. Miller ran away with both motos with Johner Kight ta king second in his first 250cc Pro effort. Billy Hill, despite th e handicap of riding the entire second moto with his goggles protecting the to p of his helmet in stead of h is eyes, finished third. In the 125cc Pro class, David Saxton survived a fu rious four-way battle that left Johner Kight sidelined with mechanical problems and second place Chris Howard u pside down no less than fo ur times in the two races. Pat Shields survived for third. There were over 160 entries and an estimated 1250 specta tors tu rn ed out to watch th e sh ow.
