Q') e-r ~ V ,.0 e v ~ i- c, V (J) Troy Cline at the Dunes Mini track. Keith McMillen (41) and Arthur Huffer point, Johnson a nd Tripes took over first and second with third being held by Benavidez. Gerig fell on one of the first turns on the first lap, but was passing riders left and right. Johnson was on his way towards winning the race when , unexpectedly, he ra ised his arm and pulled off th e track. A coil wire was responsible for shutting down his Maico. Tripes then had the lead with Benavidez and Zitterkopf following him while Gerig worked all th e way up to fourth . Two firsts gave Tripes the first place cash over Zitt erkopf, Benavidez and Gerig. . George Holland, of Suzuki, came out to practice -for the coming CMC Trans-Cal series, and h e defeated Yamaha 's Scott Burnworth in the I 25cc Pro class. LOP rider Jim T arantino wasn 't about to let Holland take th e win in the 250cc Pro class , and Tarantino led the younger Pro in both mo~os for the top money. Results 60 JR: t . Wageman wipes up Dunes Pros By -Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 3 The American Motocross Enterprises Summer Series is now over, but the Friday night season is not. There was a full -34 crowd for tonight's race, and everyone should be sure to come out to the ~t CMC Ascot. Dunes for th e Summer Blow-Out and Fox Hunt to be held on Friday, Sept. 17. Will Kenny Zahrt set a world's record for a motorcycle j ump? You 'll ha ve to be there to find out. The top Pro riders ton igh t included Russ Wageman, who defeated David Lynch in th e 250cc Pro class, Jim Holley of O 'Neal Distributing, who edged out Greg Torgerson for the 500cc Pro win and Bob Kline struck gold in th e I 25cc Pro race: David Lynch was the second fastest rider and led the final moto. Kirk Belto, of the 250cc Intermedi ate rac e, a nd one other rid er flipped th eir .bikes over th e last whoop past th e score tow er , and th e yell ow flag came out. Wageman passed by Lynch at this point, but realized his mistake,' so he dropped back to let L ynch take first. Later on, Wageman made hi s move for th e win. Overall it wa s Wageman, L ynch , Jones and Hanzo. Dave Chambers just graduated from .the Mini track and is now racing on the International tra ck with the faster . riders. Chambers, riding a Kawasaki in the 125cc Beginner class, competed in the second division tonight. He was on his way to taking the show in the first rnoto but made a small mistake. While iit the lead, Dave turned his front wheel too sharp and keeled over. Mike Greenwood took the moto WIn . In the final moto, Chambers was out to take the win , but fell on the second straight and injured his leg , which put him out of action. Paul Thompson led the final moto. Cline new Dunes Mini master By Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 3 After having very little competition during most of the season, Rob Sassen met his match in the 80cc Stock Junior 12 and over class during American Motocross Enterprises Mini track ra cing at Indian Dunes. Roost Factory's Troy Cl in e faced Sassen, and though he co u ld n' t contend with Sassen 's holesh o t starts, by the end of the race Cl in e would work hi s way past the fast Honda rider to ta ke the top trophy. Sassen often takes off the line after the others and then plays catch up. This time, he had to get serious in order to race with Cline. In the first -mo to , Sassen's Honda got the jump on th e pack with Cline following closely in second. When the checkered flag came out it. was Cline, Sassen and John Sawitskas. The final moto was similar to the first, with Sassen proving to be the best at the start. This time Cline had to find a different place to work by Sassen, and he decided to pass him on a sweeper. Cline had the lead with Sassen unable to regain his position. jammin' Jody Tapia trailed Sassen in third place. In the Open Pro class first round, his bike decided to quit for a while al though he came roaring back in the second and did-in the whole class, start to finish . Mike Kirby won the first , just barely edgin g out J eff Johnson - who ch a rges like th e best .of 'em, with J immy Ros a skidding in for third. Second round, o u t front was Hames, 'then Johnson - who wasn't about to let an yon e ca tch him , and, with that effort, Pete took home firs t pl ace money , foll owed overall by Kirby and Rosa. In the 500cc Pro class, H ames won th e two ro unds wi th Johnson second bo th times a nd Eddie San Roman swapping third around with Greg Nelson. Eddie hung onto it in th e ' second race , th ereby getting himself a large share of the pa yback. The final run-down in the 250cc Pro was Hames, Kirby and Nelson. Brent Bowers won the small bike group, two straight, while Jason Bell tried very hard to ca tgh him , especially in the first race when the pair of them came to the checkered flag almost side by side. Kurtis Cushman came in third overall while Matt Stoutenburg won over Danny Grigg in the Mini class. The 250 and 500cc Juniors and Intermediates ran together, bringing it up to a good class. Overall winner, first moto, was Jim Morris on a 250, with Bruce Nordstrom giving him a good fight for many a lap, until two 500s manned by Len Gambo and Kevin Clayton scooted on by. They still couldn't catch Morris though. Next moto was again a real tussle, and as the flag fell with Nordstrom - ou t front, Clayton , Gambo and Morris all caine flying out of turn four in a row. But Clayton, who was in the middle of the sandwich, wouldn 't give an inch and arrived at the line a squeak ahead of the other two. ._ Results MINI JR: t . Matt Stoutenburg (Yam); 2. I Several of the Mini racers froin the Indian Dunes territory appeared at Ascot's Continental Motosports Corporation motocross tonight and stirred up the 80cc Intermediate and Expert competition. In his first race at this track, Kyle Lewis became the Intermediate winner after bauling his buddy Shane Trittler.
