Turner affirms Saddleback crown By Lee Taylor Photo by Greg Taylor ORANGE, CA, SEPT. 4 Yamaha rider Juan Benavidez topped the Open Pro class at this weeks Saturday Saddleback Motocross after two tough ' hon" Leeps M CM a " rollin' on at Corona MX By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, SEPT. 9 When Malcolm Smith's Vince McMahon (Yam) is on the warpath, watch out. In the past few weeks, McMahon has had a stranglehold on the 250cc Pro class: at Corona Raceway ~ . In the first moto, McMahon rocketed to the front of the pack ahead of Yamaha of Cucamonga's Rick Vanderham (Yarn) and Oakley's Jack Scott (Yam). Vanderham managed to keep McMahon in his sights, but that was about all. However, Vanderham had to deal with Scott, who was breathing down his back. When the check- •• .• a ... e r e d flag appeared it was McMahon who easily took the win followed by Vanderham and Scott. Moto two was a carbon copy of the first; McMahon grabbed the early lead and cruised to another sweat-less moto. Again Vanderham managed to hold back Scott for second. The battle of the night award goes to the 250cc In terrnediate class. In the first moto, Wheelsmith 's Rick Hoffman (Mai) took an early lead after taking advantage of downed riders through the newly revamped Supercross section. Hoffman held on to a slim lead over Circle City Honda's Pat Schre££ler (Hon) and Yamaha of , Covina's Tim Cauby (Yam ). On th e second lap, Schre££ler had a rough time through the whoops, handing second to Cauby. Cauby continued onhis rampage by passing Hoffman for the lead on the same lap. In the end it was Cauby who took the win .. •• _------ - .•a . . ---• .. ---- ------ -- ---~ - ~---- - - ~-- - - _ ._--- -~--- . ~ ORANGE, CA , SEPT. 12 Todd Campbell, newly recruited to the 125ccPro ranks, signed with PJI over the weekend and once more burned up the Sad- motos agains t top competitors Robert Reisinger, on a Suzuki, and Tim Locey, riding for Yamaha. Locey powered to the first moto win after Benavidez took a trip to the turf. Benavidez remounted to take second as Reisinger moved into third a t the checkers, just ahead of Maico rider Anthony Pasqualotto. Locey ran into mechanical prob.Ierns in the second moto and pulled from the race. Reisinger and Benavidez battled for -th e front position throughout the race with Benavidez edging Reisinger for the moto win and overall top position. Reisinger went home with the runner-up share of the purse with Pasqualotto taking third. Suzuki rider Clint Hardick topped the first round of 250cc Pro action ahead of a furious battle between Honda riders Dean Cates and .lim Tarantino with Cates getting 't h e nod at the checkers. Tarantino came back to win the second round, but Hardick kept the action close and took the overall win with a 1-2 score. Cates picked up th ird overall behind Tarantino with Honda-mounted Mike Shoemaker placing fourth ahead of Maico tearns- . ter Scott Johnson. Suzuki star George Holland and Honda ace Brian Myerscough battled for 125cc Pro supremacy in the first ankle-biter moto. Myerscough led ,m ost of the moto, but Holland led where it counted, the finish line. Holland backed up his first moto performance with a strong ride in round two to clinch the overall victory. Suzuki rider Gary Bowman ~e t the p're~sure q,n Holland and dleback turf behind Saddleback " Kin g " Ron Turner. First mota action found Campbell (Kaw ) out in front fending off Mike Beier, riding for Orange County Cycles , American Honda Ace Turner and Tracy Meeks , riding for Team Green/DG . After several hair-raising laps, Turner took over on the downhill. Campbell tried to catch Turner, but was held to second, Beier was third and Meeks and Shawn Niday rounded out the top five. When the men blasted out of the gate for their final encounter, there was a duel for the lead between Beier and Meeks. Both tangled and went down, leaving Campbell room to take command. Turner lost no time in taking over second and pursuing Campbell. Beier, recovered from his bail, rounded out the top three. Going into a berm with Campbell alongside, Turner slipped a wheel under for the number one slot. When the finish line loomed into view, Turner led the way, Campbell took home second place loot and Beir claimed third place money. The 125cc Intermediates took the track by storm. The first time out, Jerry Anker was out in front and flying. The dice of the day belonged to . Anker and R&D 's Rudy Dickinson. Dickinson squeezed by in a turn and . held to the end with Anker close in second and Darin Powell third. Chris Taylor led the second charge with Dickinson in hot pursuit. Soon an Anker-Dickinson duel for the overall was raging. Taylor was having a super ride, under intense pressure from Dickinson. Finally, Taylor overshot a berm and Dickinson sailed on ~"I..." 1.
