Tarantino survives LaborDayGP By Kit Palmer COR O NA, CA, SEPT. 6 By far th e most grueling G rand Prix event Corona Raceway holds is the Labor Day G P. This year's Labor Da y G P should have been named "The survival of the fittest ," because it takes place in the middle of the summer, amidst 100-plus temperatures. This year's fittest rider was Honda 's Jim Tarantino. Not only did Tarantino capture rhe win in the 250cc Pro class, he al so topped the fiel d, finishing first overall. Whe n the flag dropped for the start of the straddle-th e-fro nt- wheel-deadengine start , it was Dales Modern Cycle's Sco tt Manning (Ya m) who led the field into the first tu rn. However, by th e end of the firs t lap it wa s J ua n Benevid ez (Yam) wh o had comman d. Recuperating from so-so starts were Taran tino and Goat Breker (Kaw). T he two pla yed follow -th e-leader th ro ugh the pack until they fou nd themselves in th ird and fou rth behind Ma n n ing. Ma nning , sufferin g from a rea r-bra keless Yamaha, was easy prey for Tarantino and Breker. Tarantino and Breker were still quite a distance behind th e leader, so the two had their work cut out for them if th ey wa nted an y chance of ov ertakin g Benevidez, wh o was putting in a fa ntastic ride. Benevidez's luck went sour wh en his Yamah a came to an u ntimely halt. Taran tin o, Breke r and Ma n ni n g cruised by the hap less rider while engaged in a dog-figh t for the lead. . The battle was one of the bes t in Co ro na GP history; they neve r spread more than a bikeleng th apart. Whe n the three h eaded for the ch eckered flag, after nea rl y 50 miles of racing, only four seconds separated th em . T ara ntino took the win wit h on ly inc hes to sp a re over Breker wh ile th e ha ndica p ped Manning too k a close th ird. Fourth went to Dean Cates (H on ) while Vince McMah on settled for fifth . In the 500cc Pro class, Tim Locey (Yam) had to fend off Suzu ki-mou nted, Team Mo ntoya's Ro bert Reisi nger before he co u ld claim the hardfought victory . The two leaders battled closely throughout th e race while hearing the th undering knobby steps of Greg Zitterkopf (Yam) in third. Zitterkopf ha d la bo red his way through the pack after a slow start to eventually capture third. Matt Tedder (Yam) reeled in fourth while Bret Wallings rounded out the top five. In the 125cc Pro class, Chris Lance (Kaw) emerged on top after tangling with Steve Wiseman and Steve Cardillo. All three put on quite an exciting show, throughout the moto, with second goingto Wiseman while Cardillo and Tim Foster settled for third and fourth . Cannon shoots to DeAnza MX victory By Kit Palmer SUNNYMEAD, CA, SEPT. II Yamaha-mounte d Kirk Cannon used a flawless I-I ta lly 'to secure the win in the 250cc Beg inner class today at DeAn za Cycle Park, edgin g out second place finis her Mickey Brannan (Hon). By th e second lap, Cannon had already shot do wn Brannan for second in h is assa u lt for th e lead . R issman extended his lead with each turn , but dro pped out on ly three la ps from the en d. T his gave Cannon a clear shot at the wi n. Brannon held on for second while Carter labored h is way into third. In the seco n d rn oto it was Bra n na n who h ad co ntrol of th e lead by the end o f la p o ne, follo wed by Rissma n, Do ug O ssa n na (Suz), Cannon and Ca rte r. Brann an held on to hi s lead for two laps unti l Ri ssm an fou nd a flaw in his defense, as did Can non a la p later.
