Logston, Hanna, Waldrop cash in at Cruces Arizona rider Brett H anna (Suz) took advantage of Logston's second moto crash to win the 250cc Pro, while consistency put Pro fla t tracker, Randy Waldrop (Suz), in the winner' s circle in Open 'Pro action. There was a sparce turnout at Las Cruces Moto-X Park for the $1,200 purse and large trophies, but the racing was good and spirits were high all da y. Scott Logston, not looking very fresh after racing 350 miles away in Midland, TX the night before , controlled the first 125cc Pro moto from start to finish. Ten seconds back was Shaun Perrero(Hon), making a return to racing after a year' s layoff , was styling in second, while former Mini ' star; Zip McRae (Yam) , made his 125cc debut in third. . In the second moto, Scott again had the lead, but fell on the first lap, putting Shaun in the lead. Scott didn't waste time getting back into second, but Shaun was on the gas. Just when it looked like Shaun was a sure winner, he separated from his bike while jumping up " th e cliff". "The cliff" was straight up and rough, setting up lots of crashes throughout th.e day. Scott motored on to an easy WIn over Albuquerque's Tim Fastle (Suz) and Zip . In the 250cc Pro race, Logston (Ka w ) went to an early lead and stretched it to a 15-second lead by the fini sh. Brett H anna (Suz) (who raced in Tucson the night before) came thro ugh in second wi th Shaun Perrero (Hon) a close third. In the second moto, Scott h it the gate and came out dead las t. Bobb y Nichols (Suz) passed Hanna in th e first turn to lead th e race. Hanna sta yed right with him, trying for the lead. Wi th about three laps to go, Scott moved into th ird and ga ined on the leaders. Scott passed Hanna going up the big uphill. Scott th en tried to get Nichols in the S-turns, but ended his charge with his head in the dirt. Nichols went wide on the last lap, and H anna slipped by for th e win and firs t overall, Nichols came in second for third overall wi th Scott coming in third for second overall. AMA Pro flat tracker, Randy Waldrop, borrowed a Suzuki and won Open Pro with a unique style. It was no easy jo b as Ryan Armi tage (KT M) pushed him hard th e entire race, after early leader James Fastle's Honda quit sparking. Consistency for Joel Cra ig (Mai) gave him second overal l. Lenhardt, Koski captures Billings dirt drags wins By Brian George BILLINGS, MT, AUG. 22 With a lull in the local motocross action, the Billings Motorcycle Club decided to host an unusual event for the midwest motorcycle competitors and put on a dirt drag race , for machines from 80cc to 750cc-plus. To spice up the event, the club put up a $2,000 purse, which helped draw nearly 100 riders from various states in the region. Action kicked off with the 85cc bikes lining up, and, in the Stock Dirt class, Mike Marshall and Darren Kobelt lined up for the final. By the end of the straight, it .was Marshall taking the win and advancing to the 85cc Top Eliminator final against 85cc Modified winner, Troy Dunlap. In this final , Marshall again proved to be the fastest Mini with a quick victory and top overall for the day. In the big bikes, 500cc machines were split into three classes: street, dirt and modified, with the street portion going to Dave Dodge. In the hotly-contested dirt action, Bryan Hayes bested Tony Bracy and Dave Johnson for the right to run in Top Eliminator, as Gary Frank held off Les Smith and Dennis Phel to make his way to the finale. In the threerider run-off for Top Eliminator, Bryan Hayes emerged the fastest competitor, with Dodge and Frank running two-three. In 750cc action, Mark Lenhardt defeated Gary Crocket and Frank Delaware, while Scott Koski outran Darrell Devitt and Brent Lenehan for the 750cc-plus bracket. Among the three Top Eliminators of the big-bike category, a Top-Eliminator-of-the-Day race was held, for big money, where Mark Lenhardt beat both Hays and Koski to run home with "Best Dragster of the Day " laurels. In other racing Don Hoban took the 125cc Dirt division ahead of Dean Ronan and Jason Frank, and it was Jeff Dietz th e victor in 125ccModified over Kelly Pratt. In the Top Eliminator runoff, Dietz took the title with Hoban ending his da y in second. Larry Coomber made his way into the 250cc Dirt Top Eliminator run with a win over T om Cardwell and Mitch Moe , with Ric Rael winning the Modifeid portion, leaving Ken Dietz and Mark Lenhardt second and third. In the 250cc Top Eliminator, Rael came out on top; Coomber rolled in with runnerup awards. • Results 85 DIRT: 1. Mike Marshall; 2. Darren Kobelt. 85 MOD : 1. Troy Dunlop. 85 TOP ELlM : 1.
