Blakeslee, Vreeke to Willow ARRA RRwins Whelchel wipes up CRCDunes By Lori Tyson ROSAMOND, CA, SEPT. 5 By Lee Taylor Photo by Greg Taylor After starting in 19th place in the 600cc Four Stroke GP , Champion Moriwaki 's Whitney Blakeslee snatched the win at VALENCIA, CA, AUG. 29 It was a wi ld and crazy kind of day for the California Racing Club at the Dunes. Yamaha Support and Answer the American Road Racing Association's Willow Sp rings meet fro m Steve Re ynosa ri ght at the. finish line. It took Whi tney four la p s to work his way up to second behind Reynosa , a nd they spen t the next four swapping the lead. Reynosa put up perhaps his toughest fight of the year, but, at the end of the eight-Iapper, Whitney snuck his wheel out in front to wi n. Lady luck di d not stay with them for long; la ter in the day both men had th e misfortune to grenade their mo tors. Reynosa's was due to an o ld h ead that . th ey were forced to use w hen the new one didn ' t a rrive; Whitney's was caused by a n une xpected neutral which produced megarevs. Jim Vreeke grabbed his usual early lead in th e 600cc Production race, but surprised everyone by staying on the pavement for once, easily taking the first place trophy. Aaron Post and Doug Toland had a tremendous battle for second in the early part of the race. They were joined by Joe Brus-, cella and Earl Roloff midway through for a four-way duel. Roloff took second, and Bruscella squeaked by Toland at the flag for the number three spot. Post and Toland also went at it hard in 600cc Box Stock, and, in another very close finish, Post took it by a wh eel 's length at the lin e to hold his points lead. Products ace joh n Whelchel, home town boy ma de good, turned a newlycrafted Shadow G len on end in th e 250cc P ro contest with a p air of backto-back wins. Whelchel came back later in the day to score for the Open Pros wi th another double victory. Whelchel had to fight for h is money. Thro ughou t both motos in ' the 250cc class, Whelchel fou n d PJ -I's Mike Sh oemak er (Hon) ou t in fro nt. ' Wheel to wheel with hand leba rs tangl ing wa s the na me of th e game for th ese two. Both ti mes out, Whelchel . reeled in " T he Shoe" and managed to slip on by. for the overall victory. " T he Shoe"held firm in second for second place loot, holding fellow Honda.racer, Larr y Bake r, with a 4-3 tally , to third place money. Yamaha support rider J im Coffey , out of Burbank Yamaha with a 3-4 ride, found himself claiming fourth place honors and fighting off half the world of top 250cc Pros, among them the Zahrt brothers, Jon and David. First time out, Ayle found himself forced , back to fourth by H ondamounted Hect or Bar ba , Sh a wn McGurrin and QFC Racin g T eam entry Bill Collett. When the machines blasted out of th e gate for their final encounter, Ayle was ready and raring to go. McGurrin took an early lead and left behind a furious battle for the runnerup slot between Barba and Ayle . Ayle 's Husqvarna lit up the track, throwing stran ge sh ado ws in the turns. Ni gh tt ime racing doesn 't even faze Gayton. In the first rnoto, G ayton held Da n ny Hoskison, piloting a Ya mah a for his dad, to seco nd and Kolbe Honda entry, Chuck Kegg, to third. The second time around , Gayton had to fight for his win. Dropp ing his bike, he fought his way back up through an angry pack and into second, then, in a spectacular burst of energy, reeled in leader Kegg and took control by the checkered flag. Kegg held firm for second place go ld with Hoskison ending the even ing with third overall, a tally of 2-5. Ending the moto in third wa s j ason Collier. Williams, Russell Canyon ST, TT double winners By Jauna Balderston PHOENIX, AZ, AUG. 21 Canyon racers and fans met once again tonight to enjoy the , charge of flat tracking. In the 250cc Expert class, in the short track main, Darin Balderston captured the holeshot. Dennis Parks soon took over the lead position, then surrendered it to Rick Williams. Parks moved into the second spot and Guy . Warner took third. Williams finished first, Parks took second, and Balderston came back to snag third. . In the Open Expert short track main, the five riders met at the line to be divided with the shot of the green light. Bob R ussell snagged the start with Mike Yogerst and Tom Burcham close behind. Pat Antonides moved up to give Yogerst a fight for second and Bart Ben inati challenged Burcham for four th. Russell moved wa y out in front, and Aritonides moved into a strong second. Russell took the wi n, Anionide s fi nish ed second, and Burch am grabbed third. In the TT ma in event for the Open Expert class , Benina ti grabbed the holeshot wi th Russell running second a n d Antonides runn ing thi rd . Russell soon captu red the lea d wi th Antonides ru nning second and Beninati in th ird. R ussell p ulled far a hea d, and Antonid es held a strong second while Beninati battled for third wi th Yogerst and Burcham. Yogerst stole third while Russell h eld a strong lead a n d Antonides remained in a strong second. Russell finished wi th the win, Antonides to o k second, a n d Yogerst got third.
