yon, Angeles Crest, and Ft. Tejon. The route avoided freeways and busy highways so everyone enjoyed a scenic and safe ride. The ride started at the Bob's Big Boy in Sunland and included four field checks with the fifth check being the finish at the Straw Hat Pizza in La Cresenta. At each check the Shamrocks had a wheel which riders spun to determine their poker hand. Prizes were given for high hand, low hand, and the rider traveling the greatest distance to attend the event. The ride was a great success, not only because of the excellent way in - which the event was organized and conducted, but also because it gave dirt riders and street riders a chance to share the same "trail." We are sure to see this ride as an annual event. Good job Shamrocks! Firefighters MX Over 100 California firefighters participated on Aug. 6 at Baylands Raceway in Fremont in the first Motocross to be held as part of the California Firemen Athletic Association Olympics this year hosted by the Santa Clara Fire Department. Thanks to Rocky Cycle's support and the donations and contingencies from PJl Lubricants, Bell Helmets, Hallman USA, Gold Belt, Griffs, Cycle-AM, Scott USA, Baylands Raceway, Zoom Cycles, and Honda Peninsula. The event turned out to be a great success. This was also a burn unit benefit and $1350 was raised for the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Burn Unit. All the participants had a super time and they are all looking forward to next year when the event will be held in Southern California. BOB WEBSTER Motocross Chairman Santa Clara Fire Department . Santa Clara, CA Fireman's Olympics 1982was the first motocross ever to be held in conjunction with the Fireman's Olympics. The event was held at Baylands Raceway in Fremont. It was a night race and drew around 150 firemen from across the state, play riders to pros. The race was organized by Bob Webster of the Santa Clara Fire Department. It ran like clockwork and everyone I saw thought it was great. I would like to thank Bob and his wife for all their time spent to put on this outstanding event. KEN RATZLOFF El Monte Fireman F-2 thumper thanks I would lik e to take some time to thank the fans for their tremendous support at the Sears Point road race National. The cheers and good wishes I received made me try that much harder. A tire problem kept us from finishing higher, but we still were the first thumper to finish top 10 in Formula Two 10 12 years. In closing I would like to thank my fantastic sponsors: Knight Frames, Redline Oils, Lockhart Coolers, Racers World, Shoei Helmets, and my tuner Harry Lillie, without whom I wouldn't be racing. KURT BICKEL # 95 Daly City, CA Supermouth enjoys World final The World Speedway Championship at the Coliseum was the first speedway race my wife and I have seen in this country as spectators from the grandstand in over 13 years. It was also the best-staged speedway event I've seen anywhere in the world. The presentation of the races, the pageantry, even the preparation of the infield and track were all top-rate and more professional than 90% of the motorcycle races held in this country. Heat 14 between Bruce Penhall and Kenny Carter had all of us standing and yelling our lungs out. It was incredible. When Harry Oxley and his partners decided to take on the most difficult task of successfully staging a World Championship Speedway race in a country where most people have never even heard of the sport, they had to know it would be difficult. As far as this fan is concerned, they did one helluva job! The 1982 World Speedway 'C hampionship was the best-staged speedway race I've ever seen . LARRY HUFFMAN San Clemente, CA Shamrocks shenanigans' The Shamrocks M.e. sponsored a District 37 Road Ride on Aug. 22... That's right, a road ridel And they . did a professional job as if they had sponsored road rides as long as they've sponsored off-road events. . Under the skillful management of Marv Van Sickle, almost 200 riders enjoyed a 165 mile road ride through beautiful mountain roads. The ride included such scenic roads as Bouquet Canyon, Little Tujunga, Sand Can- problems in the press, I have been prepared to discuss the topic at the last two NOC meetings (The first occured prior to the drafting of my letter). Unfortunately, Mr. Hammel attended neither. (A copy of the letter was mailed to Mr. Hammel.) It should be evident that the subject of"emergency closures," and their support, is of some importance to groups other than D-37. 2.) The facts of what occured on the July 3-4 weekend are not in dispute. The questions with 'which we are concerned are still unanswered. Is it appropriate for BLM to institute closure of public land to lawful ORV use to solve problems unrelated to the lawful use .of ORVs? Should we, as ORV users and members of the ORV organizations, support such closures? 3.) It is true that I was not at Shadow Mountain on that weekend. On June 3, at the DDMUAC meeting, I asked Mr. Hammel ifhe would like help from CORVA and! or other groups in distributing educational material. He stated that the D-37 clubs could handle the matter. Thus,noonebutD-37, BLM, the Sheriff's department, and the Highway Patrol was present. 4.) To the contrary, it would have "been nice if Mr . Hammel had called other members of the ORV community about the "emergency closure," assuming he knew of it ' prior to July 3. The rest of the ORV community learned of it from the local media and the Federal Register, after it had occured. 5.) Let it be know, Mr. Gochnauris aware of the problems of J awbone/ Butterbredt and will do what he believes appropriate. While it may appear that .M r , Hammel and I have our differences, I still have the greatest respect for him as a person and a leader. He does an excellent job under difficult circumstances. I look forward to discussing the above issues with him. RICK "THUMPER FREAK" GOCHNAUR Downey, CA Published letters do not necessarily reflect the position of Cycle News. Inc. Send letters to Voices.
