L.eroy,8ruches jam to Corona MXvictory By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, AUG. 27 . A large number of 250cc Beginners turned out to do battle tonight at Corona Raceway, which resulted in the need of .. two divisions. Jeff Leroy (Suz) and Peter Bruches (Yam) emerged victorious.after each swept both motos. There was no stopping Leroy, in the first rnoto of division one, after he stole the holeshot and proceeded to stretch his lead with every turn. Leroy's nearest competition was Tom Gergen (Suz), Gergen did all he could to challenge the leader, but Leroy 's quick pace was just too much for him to handle. In third was Jim Carter {Ya m ), but hammering down on Carter was Claudid Marquez (Hon), In the end, Leroy captured the win ahead of Gergen, while Carter managed to fend off Marquez for third. Moto two was a replica of the first, Leroy shot into the lead followed by Eric Dickinson (Hon ), Carter and Marquez. Leroy extended his lead to a comfortable margin within a few laps. Gergen, in fourth , picked his way into second with only a half a lap to spare. Leroy took the win ahead of Gergen, Dickson and Carter. In division two it was Bruches who stole the show after he completely dominated both motos. Bruches took the overall with a I-I while 1-" Rowen (Hon) settled for second with a 2-2 outing. A 4-3 tally by Dave Edwards (Yam) was good enough for third. Malcolm Smith sponsored Vmce McMahon (Yam) continued his monopoly of the 250cc Pro class. He ran away with the win in both rnotos, beating second place finisher Jeff Jennings (Yam ). Jennings had a 2-2 showing while 'Yamaha of Cucamonga's Rick Vanderham (Yam) took third. Corona Money classes split four ways By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA, AUG. 25 The Pros are back in town, and a good turnout was on hand at Corona Raceway tonight to do battle against old rivals and some new faces from northern California. Roger Thompson, K'RWand T&R Racing sponsored, went wire to wire in the 250cc Money TT, but it was anything but a romp as he was pressured every inch of the way by Fontana Racing's Mike Kirby. Thompson made no mistakes and was able to hold off the hard charging Kirby. Greg Nelson, another member of the T&R Racing Team, was in for third. The 250cc Money half mile was a case of sweet revenge as it was Kirby who broke on top with Darren Hulbert on the Carl Brown Suzuki second and John Barricklow (T&R and Bill Bell sponsored) in third. Barricklow, with one lap down, had a spectacular get off in turn one, causing a red flag to come out. A single file restart was called with all riders returning to the line. Again it was Kirby in the lead with Hulbert second, Nelson third "a n d Thompson fourth. Thompson made one of his down-low-and-sneaky moves, on the third lap, that worked as he came up with the second and started knocking on Kirby's door. Nelson had also picked up a spot as th e top three locked into their positions. They finished in th e same order. Kirby also added the Open Expert half mile to his night's effort going the distance in front with John Barricklow second. The Open Money TT shaped up to be a duel between Jeff Johnson (Fontana Racing/KRW/ K&N ) and Pete Hames (Bills Pipes/Simpson/Storz), with both mounted on Harry D. Foster prepared Triumphs. On the start it was Johnson that got the edge with Hames second and Anthony Urias third. On the second lap, John Burnett's Shell Racing Specialties Yamaha moved into third. On the fifth lap, Hames got into trouble which gave him a very close look at the Corona Racing surface, and Burnett took over second with Rex Hailey moving into third. From there on out, the order was set with Johnson picking up the win, Burnett second and Hailey third. Hames was ready for the Open Money half mile, taking over the lead by the end of one lap with Burnett second and Johnson third. It took Johnson six laps to find the chink in Burnett's armor and take over second. With four laps to go, Johnson was unable to make up the distance and settled for second with Burnett third. Bob Graves regained his hold and win streak on the half mile as he got out on top, built up a good lead and brought it on home. Pat McCann got off second, but three laps into the race his bike went south. Jim Stentz moved in to fill up the hole, but Don Meiner, a T&R Racing teammate of Stentz's, had other ideas and on the sixth lap took over second and was there at the end. Stentz settled for the third. Result s TT MINI : 1. Jason Bell (Yam); 2. Matt Stoutenburg (yam); 3. Nano Pacillas (Yaml. 125 : 1. Jason Bell (Yam); 2. Nano Pacillas (YamI. 250 NOV: 1.
