Kell ogg COSTA MESA, CA, SEPT. 4 Alan Christian topped the Costa Mesa action ton ight, despite the efforts of Mike Bast, Dubb Ferrell a nd Bobby Schwartz, whose return to American spe edwa y has made it 'even more exci ting to watch. . In 't he T hird Division main, rider number 177 came out first, bu t was passed on lap two by Mark Dwyer, who led for the remainder of th e race. Pam Bennett finished th ird and Mike Coniglio was fourt h. The Secon d Division main was restarted twic e. O n the final restart Alan Davidson , riding fro m the zero yard line, led fro m beginn ing to end. Unchallenged for second p lace was rider number 209. Third was Penny Scopellite, who on the fo urth lap moved from fou rt h to the n umber three position . Eddie Thu rm an, who • was third , went down and wa s given fourt h place. The First Divis io n main even t saw rapidly upcom ing and very h o t rider, Guy Ermolenko, lead the race right from the moment when the starting ga te went up. Keith Chrisco chal len ged on th e th ird lap by trying th e soft outside dirt; this cost Chrisco th e number two spot as Sterling Cogar took it for one lap. On the next lap Cogar was passed by Shaw n McConnell who was in fourth for the firs t two laps. McCo n nell moved in to th e number two position, but there weren't enough laps for McConnell to make a try at the lead. Ermolenko too k the win and McCo nnell wa s second with Cogar right beh ind. The amazin g John Cook was fifth . , The big one, the Scratch main event, started wi th Mike Bast in lane one, Dubb Ferrell in lane two , Alan Christian in the sandwich position and Bobby Sch wartz outside in lane four. Christian was first into tum one with Bas t right beh ind and Schwartz followin g, trying to pass on the outside , Ferre ll was a close fourt h. On the third lap, Schwartz wen t a litt le too wide and Ferr ell was ab le to take over third. Tha t' s how it en ded: Christian, Bast, Ferrell and Sch wartz.
