WirthlinjChambers take Nevada night • race series By Don Akers 8t Pa~ Manuel .Photo by Wayne Gales HENDERSON, NV, AUG. 8 The team of Crockett Writhlin and Randy Chambers took overall honors in the second and final of the Nevada State Championship night races sponsored by the Chargers West and the Gamblers M.C. In the second of the two race series the course was 13 miles long and six laps were required. The format was again a hare scrambles. The flag dropped on the first two riders at 9:0 I p.m. and two more were flagged off every 15 seconds until all were underway. Wirth lin brought in the big Husky to partner Chambers just 25 minutes and 51 seconds after leaving the starting line. (Although we didn't know it at the time, this would also be the fastest lap of the evening!) Running in second place was Mike Cockrum with a 32 minute and eight second lap and Bill Quinn was in third at 36:33. . Lap two had Chambers still in the lead, but Rick Sherman, after taking over from .Q u in n , had moved their Ettie four-stroke Yamaha into second place with the Cockrum /Sterling entry dropping back to third. The third time around had the Wirthlin/Chambers bike stretching their lead on the field with Cockrum moving back to second. The Quinn/ Sherman Yamaha had broken a headlight mount and although they were still moving they surrendered third place to the Can-Am-mounted team of Al Southall/Tim Thompson. Laps four and five showed no major position changes but the hard charging Chambers/Wirthlin duo started lapping the rest of the field! Lap six was a solo performance as the leaders had passed all the other bikes in the race and were the only ones who went the full six laps. Cockrum/Sterling came in second with Southall / Thompson finishing third. ' The officials used motocross scoring to combine the two races of the series to arrive at the overall series placement. ' They were: Chambers/ \yirthlin first overall and first Open, Sterling/Cockrum second overall and first 250cc, Quinn/Sherman third overall and first four-stroke , and Southall/Thompson fourth overall and second 250cc. •
