obviously go ing to come up wi th some recommenda tions, and ho pefu lly you could get the groups to come together for a joint meeting. "The, board members should be volun teers. I'd spend my own mo ney an d use my own time. This isj ustone idea, but in the light that the factories in question won 't talk to the AMA at thi s point, it mi ght be a way to commun icate. Communication is the most importan t th ing right now, as we have two factions that are being very adamant. "The opinions being expressed in Cycle News are based on loyalties each person has ' to a group or an organi zation. Nothing is ever onesided. It's not fair 'to air all these views without getting each side. If the factories have decided that dealin g with the AMA and Mike DiPrete is an imposs ibility, then we need independent people to step into th e middle of th is thing. The government does it all the time . "The main thing is we can't take six months or a year to pull this th ing off. It could be set up in 30 da ys. The Trans-USA has been decided, the factories will run their series and the AMA will run the irs . We need to work on '83, so we'll know what's going on when the racing is startin g up in February." Bob Popiel, H usq vam a: If you guys (Cycle N ews) are going to be covering the Trans-USA, that's a step in our direction of riding it. We' ve heard that Wrangler is behind AMA raci ng, and I th ink if the promoters advert ise enough and make the races at tra ctive enough people are going to go to them. It 'll cost us a ton of mo ney to keep our ri ders on the road for the T rans-USA, but we'll do it. "We don 't really have an opinion yet on what has happened. We're not reall y big enough to set a trend or buck the system, so we're just going to see how it goes. I think we'll have a much better chance of getting results at the Trans-USA, we should be in the top three. Fighting the japane se factories at the CMC races is a di fferent story. TheyTrans-USA will match up some good European bik e riders, and I think it'll be pretty interesting. " Rod Bush, KTM Natio na l sales manager: From an enthusiast's point of view, I th in k if the press, the fans, and the riders support the CMC series, then they're not suppo rting the AMA and are defea ting the purpose of the AMA. That's putting the con trol of the entire sport in the ha nds of the large man ufacturers. If the large ma n ufacturers control the whole thing, ho w can KTM America compete in their series? "No, the AMA isn 't perfect, bu t I'll support the AMA all the way down the line beca use they're the best th ing going right now. The japanese factories made no attempt to ent ice KT M or H usky or Maico into their littl e org a n iza tion . They haven 't , offeredan y membership in their group to us, whi le the AMA is a membership organization. They've segregated themselves; it'll be japanese racing and japanese bikes allowed on ly." Rainer Shulz, vice presiden t of Maico USA. " I ha ve discussed the situation with Sel (Salvaraj Narayana, National service manager)and we have decided to ri de the T rans-USA. We ha d other discussions at Maico after we learned about the break up of the factori es, and I think it is very sad that things turned out as they did. "The promoter at Unadilla (Ward Robinson ) contacted me concerning the rule changes for the Trans-USA (250 and 500cc bikes in the International class and 125, 250 and 500cc bikes in the Support class). I will talk , to Sel again and we will discuss those matters. We will be backing th e AMA." • woif( ng 1 to e op either. en we can we' re going to put you r name where the fa c tory-rid ers name usually goesl Mainly because It's a good way to let the world know - your work Is Importa nt too.
