View Old Timers National. 38 built up a considerable lead, continued on to the Open class victory. The 250cc bikes seem to get around the Ridge Runners course the best, taking the overall in all but one of the marathons this year, so the fight for 'the trophy has developed into a battle , between two teams, Keller/Pennington against Brumit/Hardman. Both teams are closely matched, finishing each of the marathons within seconds of the other after two hours of hard riding. Keller/Pennington hold, the edge with three out of four races to their credit, but today the trophy went to their closest competitors, Brumit/Hardman. . Brumit/Hardman took the lead off the starting line while Keller and Pennington took a couple of laps to play catch up. Lone rider Rich Smith (Han ) grabbed the lead on the second lap, but was overtaken a couple laps later by the Keller/Pennington team , who took over the lead on the fifth, time around the two-mile course. Smith dropped to second, with Brumit/Hardman in third. Smith rode well against the two teams , eventaking the lead again when the others stopped for gas and rider changes, but shortly after the halfway point Smith dropped out with mechanical problems. This left the two teams to battle it out and the race continued with Keller/Pennington holding the lead and Brumit/Harman staying only seconds behind the m. As it turned out, the Keller/Pennington team crossed the finish lin e a few feet ahead of Brumit and H ardman and were convinced they had their fourth win until the results came out. Racing is more then going fast and that is esp ecially true in a marathon. During the two hours of hard racing, the riders must also make near perfect pit stops, keep their signals straight with their teammate, follow a strategy which they've devised before the race and follow the directions on the track its elf. T h is last item was the undoing .of th e Keller/Pennington team. As the riders come around to the checkstands at th e end of each lap, they must enter a gate designated for their class , so the scorers can mark them down in the right order. As it 'tu rned out, the scorers showed the Keller/Pennington team had gone through the Open class gate on th e first two laps of th e race and, according to the rules, those two laps weren 't scored for that team. . It was a tough break, but ~ t was the same type of error that got them the win at the last marathon when one of the Brumit/Hardman team slowed down to look back for the checkered flag a n d was p assed on the fInal lap. It is really a credit to Keller and Pen'. nington though , that th ey could be docked two laps and still come out in ' second place. Results OT: 1. Bob Chr istensen (Ma i); 2. J im Armada (Mai) ; 3.
