Tobey and Monger fin ish ed second and th ird , respectively. In the 500cc Ex pe rt feature event, j oh nson outdistanced Rodney Sulliva n for the win. johnson was astride a Yamaha in his 500cc vic tory. In the 500cc No vice main, Mike Willis of Ba kersfield p ut the fro nt wh eel of his Maico j ust in ch es ahead of Scott Swea n ey's mo unt to win. The ot her 500cc fea ture saw Scott Creager of Visalia p u t his Kaw asaki o u t in front for the jun ior win. In the O pen Novice/junior combined feature, race leader Midge Griffith of Ba kersfield lost co ntro l o f his Ya ma ha on the fin al lap a nd flew over the handlebars; Ro n Cates flew p ast him for th e wi n . Seco n d went to Mike Willis and thi rd place was pi cked u p by Stan Swea ney. Griffi th was u ni nj ured. john Burn ett held off a charging Mike Kirby to win the 250cc Ex pert feature. Burnett and Kir by p layed ca t-and-mo use throughout th e race, with Fresno's Burn ett showing su perior straigh taway speed whi le Kirb y, fro m Grand T err ace, got th ro ugh th e tu rns quicker. Darren Hu lbert p u t his Suzuki in the third spot. In the 125cc Expert main, Fresno' s Cra ig Howar d j u m ped to an ea rly adva ntag-e an d won , with Bren t Bow - ers nosing out Blan e H ollen beck for r un ner-up honors. By Gerry Reagan WATSONVILLE, CA, AUG. 22 .T h e 250cc H o n da -m o u n ted team of Mike Brum it and Kelly Hardman won the Watsonville Marathon today after a close battle with Scott Keller and Greg Pennington (Hon), whose defeat en ded a winning streak. The R idge R unners Motorcycle Club d id an exce llent job of battling th e d us t with wa ter and hay, making th e event enjoyable for riders and spectators to see. _The Open bikes were th e first off the line a n d a real fight im med ia tely devel oped be tween G ary Rab e (Ma i) and Curt Wilcox (Yam), who swa p ped the lead furiously during the early going. It was a bo u t three la ps before ' the half-way point th ough, that Wilcox ra n in to trouble. H e had just taken over the lead when his engine seized, p utting- h im o ut of the race .
