Micky Dymond came back to town af ter a tough Washouga l Na tional and he was ri ght on. Dym ond reeled in the 500cc P ro victory with a 2-1 tally that edged out Jim Holley's 1-2. Wheelsmith 's Ran dy Rodrigu ez too k a fall while ra cing the third series race and broke his left li tt le fin ger, which required an operation a nd a pin. With a cast on, he com peted so he could win the series ove rall and he did just thatl A 1-2 tally was the best that Holley could work out in the 250cc Pro contest. His buddy R uss Wageman shot Jim down in th e final moto in a battle that lasted till the checkered came out. Wageman took the to p cas h over Holley. . Bambino Tapia came thro ugh with the victory in th e I25cc Beginner Div ision One ra ce, but it was great to see Kevin Alverson win .th e fin al go on his older model Su zu ki RM 125. Tim Telford landed second overall with Alverson bei ng third on the trop hy list. While other events were won by riders who did not win both rnotos, Joe Klaza stood out as he dominated the 125cc Beginner division two contest. Keith Smart and Tom Fry were the runner-up riders. Jim Neubauer of J&H Auto was having an all-out battle with Mike Krucki in the 250cc Junior race. Krucki won the first race over Neubauer, but in the final bout the positions were reversed. Both Mike Tripes and David Gerig traveled a ways to come to Gardena, and both of these top riders ended up in the same situation - they had to follow "radical" Ron Turner, the night's winner of all three Pro classes. Turner faced his two rivals in the 125cc Pro class, Todd Peterson and Russ Wageman. When the first moto got underway, Russ Wageman was out front and took another holeshot start aboard his Kal-Gard Suzuki. Todd Peterson was second with Turner in third and running into some flags on the palm tree comer. Turner caught Peterson on the comer right after the crash wall section and swooped by Todd and took over second place. Todd tr ied to regain his position when they reached the old concession stand com er, but he failed. Then Turner went after the leader Wageman. His strategy worked as Turner zapped Wageman on the corner before the palm tree, and Turner won the rnoto over Wageman and Peterson. Turner is capable o f passing, but it sure makes it easier for him to get a holeshot, like he did in thefinal rnoto of 125cc Pro racing. He secured the spot and let others like Peterson and Wageman spend their time passing the other riders. Scott Sargent was in second ahead of John Chwastyk early in the race, but, as the laps went by, both Wageman and Peterson moved into second and third. With two firsts , Turner clinched the 125cc Pro win and nearly a 100 bucks. Wageman's 2-2 earned him second over Peterson , Sargent and Shelton. While the 125cc class only had 14 riders, the 250cc class had 20 of the fastest Pros and it wa s necessary to have two qualifiers, a consolation and then a final event. This worked out best for several riders who struck bad luck during their qualifier and needed a chance to make it in the consy.David " Way Too Much" Gerig took his Pro-Circuit Husky to the lead in the 250cc Pro final. Turner was after him and found Gerig vulnerable on the barrel comer. Turner slid by Gerig to take over the lead. Russ Wageman was third till Peterson zapped him on the comer after the crash wall, and later, Todd passed Gerig to take second. Woody Carlson fell on a comer and Mike Tripes flipped his Husky right into him so ·31
