Bishop BOYD , TX, AUG. 7 Bill Herndon took time out from the AMA Winston P ro circuit to return to Mike Kidd' s Hillside Raceway to give lessons in " G o-Fast" to all the racers in the 250cc and O pen P ro short track even ts and the Open P ro TT event. Jeff Clarkson watched intently and applied the sa me amount of twist to the throttle to chal k up two wins in th e Open Amateur class of th e short track and TT. In both the 250 and Open short track events, Bill Herndon jumped out front to let the rest of the pack " follow th e leader." Although neve r headed in either race , Bill had Duane Duvall , Ross Du ncan and Rusty Pattillo to contend with for six laps. Bill had to hang it all out, fly into the turns, drop the motorcycle on its side, anchor th e handlebars into th e dirt and slide into, through and o u t of the turns at 70 miles per hour. After several laps of this, th e rest of th e pack decided they would battle for second and third places instead. J eff Clarkson didn 't have it quite so easy. In the O pen Amateur TT heat, Jeff had to chase Mike J ay and his Yamaha around th e track, never having quite the horsepower to pass, but just enough to sta y even. The Open Amateur TT fin al a p peared to be a replay of th e heat. At the endof the first lap, before com ing onto th e main straight, Jeff got under Mike and the pair came do wn the straight side by side. However , J ay wasn 't being faked out, the duo race d whee l to w heel and shoulder to shoulder for th e entire six la ps o f the final. Clarkson finally edged out Jay Bill Herndon get his Honda down at Hillside Racewa y. in th e last two tu rns of the last lap to take th e checkered fla g first. The results were similar in the Open Amateur short track race with Clark son 's co m petition being Mike George on a Yamaha.
