and all attention turned to the battles between McDonald and Greene for second, and Glover, Chung and Jimmy Filice for fourth. By lap IS, Greene had taken over second and Filice had passed both Glover and Chung for fourth. Chung had also motored past Glover, changin g the order to read ,Ernde, Greene, McDon ald, Filice and Chung. F il ice's dri ve past Glover and Chung took some do ing, as Filice was still recovering fro m a broken wris t. After the' event, Fili ce's p lans called for getting the wrist back i n a cast as soon as possible. With th e riders spread ou t now, most all the rest of the passing consisted of the leaders movin g past lapped riders. Rhys Howard did manage to pass Glover for si xth. Behind th em , Michael Haller, Kurt Bickel , Gordon Hedemark and , Tom Phillips rounded out the top 10. Despite Emde's substantial win, th e 20-lap, 'SO qnile race was almost too much for his bike. "At the beginning, said Ernde, " I was just tr ying to save m yself for the end. I figu red just run with them and get serious in the end. Emde's chief competit ion came from local rider Don Greene and O klahoma 's Sa m McDonald, wh o holesho t both th e fir st he a t a n d th e fina l, but lost the lead and win to Emde each time. John Glover took th e in itial lead in heat two , but Fred Merk el charged from third in th e first couple of laps to grab th e checkers in front of local racer Dwayne Chung. Novato 's Greene finished third ahead of Glover. Following McDonald and Emde on the first lap of the final was David Garoutte and Merkel. The second lap , was a re peat of the fir st , but th ings began to happen after th a t. Merkel turned up the steam on h is Yamaha on laps three a nd four and passed a ll of th e top three for the lead. Emde also passed .Mclf onald, but never had a seco nd chance to p ass Merk el; th e Stockton , CA, rider lost it in turn eight, and th ough alive and well, was out of th e running. After inheriting th e lead, Emde proceeded to secu re it, opening up a lea d on th e race between McDonald and Garoutte for second. ' Garoutte disp laced McDonald by the half, bu t lost- it on lap II in th e do wnhill Ca rousel turn . G arou tte was OK , b u t through for the da y. Following Emde no w were Mclxmald, Greene , Glover and Chung. Emde had a substantial lead at th is point start to finish. Adamo was entered in the GP class and was followed past the checkers by GP entries John Williams (Duc) and Louis Vallerga (Yam). Fourth GP honors went to 'David Ernde, who was riding a solid third when the drive system on his Virago went south. ' Following Adamo from the grid were Emde, Klinzmann and Williams. Klinzmann moved into second after the first lap, but bike troubles took him out after the second. Williams passed Emde on the next lap and the top three remained the same until the white lap claimed Emde. Back of the leaders, th e other riders were sorting the other classes out. Fred Hopp put in one heck of a good ride to take the Expert Modifed class. The 42-yea r-old road race r did th is after a dual sidecar crash in th e heat race. Joseph Mills a nd Phil Beck were not far behind, fin ish in g second a nd th ird , respectively. At one point, it looked as if Yamah a 's Chris Stewa rd had the wi n in the Stock class all sewed up, but a turn 10 cras h en ded h is hopes. Mi ke Johnson then too k the lead and mot ored h is 550 Vision to th e chec kers, but Johnson was disqual ified for reasons th at were uncl ear as of presstim e. Wa yne Reiss was declared th e wi n ne r, Peter Brad y second an d Steward third. Chris Brown led fellow Amateur . -Mod ified racer Craig Weeks past the checkers at the end of the 16-lap, 40mile race. Michael Green and Ken Heuser finished third and fourth , respectively, some distance back. After the race , Adamo said he felt good about racing today, but wasn't as confident as usual. "I broke my collarbone the last time I was here, " he said. "T h e track was definitely difficult. We just cha nged the transmission for th is track. " Whether he was feeli ng confide n t o r not, Adamo would h ave a tough time convincing the fan s at Sears Point that he wasn 't up to the task ; he just had too much room to spare a t the flag. Williams worked hard on th e track and felt good about his finish . I was getting tired," he admitted, " we've been having transmission problems since yesterday. SidecaT Essaff, Crueger break record ' during sidecar • W'ln By Jim Bowman SONOMA, CA, AUG. 22 Defending AFM Champions Peter Essaff and passenger Dennis Crueger thrilled the fans in the most exciting raees at Sears Point today. In the sidecar heat, Essaff and Crueger took a last place start when their own car was stuck in neutral and wouldn 't shift into first. After the late second-gear start, the pair set a new track record during the five lap heat, finishing just seconds short of first place. The sidecar racing was especially exciting because of the close battle between EssaffiCrueger and rivals Bruce Lind and Jack Hart. Running a TZ7S0 motor, Lind/Hart had both a weight and horsepower advantage over the Kawasaki 1000 of Essaffl Crueger. Essaff said after the race , " th is is the hardest race I'v run in six years', and I have two National Sidecar Championships." The battle for first was tight and lasted until the last half of the white flag lap, when Essaff/Crueger used a lapped rider to separate them from Lind/Hart. Lind/Hart started off with the lead and never let Essaff /Crueger relax when they took it . As a matter of fact , they pushed Essaff and Crueger to a new record of I:S6.93 on the challenging raceway in the final even t. Essaff /Crueger want to thank Lindse y Enterprises, Castrol , Barnett Clutches, Arai a n d ND for their support. Thi rd place w ent to Will iam Da vidson a nd Pa trick Dunn on a Kawas ak i.
