Robert Horban (Yam )added ano th er wi n to his record by taking the 250cc A main over An nis, who was ridi n g the Ron Annis/Steve Annis/Yamaha Sports Cen ter , YZ powered ma ch ine. , T h e 125cc A ma in had Woolard launch h imself off th e line like a rocket, quickly kicking in an afterburner to pull awa y from Bixel and Washi ngton rider Ed Byers (Yam ). Woolard slid out, putting an end to hi s ride and a chance at th e wi n , and opened up th e door for Bixel to blast the pack. Byers nabbed second at the checkered flag . The Lightweigh t (125-20Occ)money class main also saw Wool ard gun down the pa ck to settle into first pl ace and fina lly get the win he had been looking for . Woolard was let off the hook whe n Bixel fell prey to the bad luck syndrome, throwing a ch ain and leaving the lead to Woolard. Byers was once agai~ second. .The 250cc A MaIO saw H orban hook it up ahead of a sta r studded field which included Annis, Reynard and Bob Klu m (Hon). Horban and Annis used each ot her for a retaining wall periodically and opened up a lead on the rest . Reynard, who had Klum hot on his heels, was also lead ing Bru ce Turnbull (Suz of Grants Pass ) and Byers (Longv iew Hon). Horban held under th e pressure, cooking up a win wh ile Ann is was forced into the runner-u p spot. Reynard took th ird . Klum and Turnbull rounded out the top five. The final race of the nigh t was the Open A Main, a 10 lap all-out war which featured some of the finest southern Oregon riders on the line, including Jeff Campbell (Elite/Simpson /Out Front Number Plates/ Harry Lillie/Boss Frames/Yam) on a sano 750 Yamaha twin, who ended up spectating when himself and Klum went down in the far corner. On the restart, it was Annis going im mediately to the head of the class with Klum pushing from the rear. Annis stayed in complete control and fine style , holding off persistent Klum, who is a very gu tsy rider and did all he could at taking the win from Annis. Result s OPENA : 1. Scott Ann is (Yam); 2. It's Anderson again at PIR MX By Brian Barnes PORTLAND, O R, AUG. 12 Jim Anderson made another appearance a t Por tland International R acewa y's regular Thursday night motocross ton igh t, winning all four Pro motos he competed in . In 250cc competition, the small field saw Anderson (Yam support! MX Fox/Kal G a rd /Da ll a s Baker Products), Tim Michlitsch (Ka w support/DG/Bel -Ray) and Rick Bozarth (Gresham Suz) finish first ; second and third the first moto. The second moto saw problems force Michlitsch from competing, giving And erson and Bozarth the first and second slots overall. Anderson holeshot moto number one of th e 125s alongside none other than Jim R. Anderson { the second) and then proceeded to leave everyone else behind. Stacy T horn ton (DG Yam support) finished second while Kawasaki ace J oe Spangler was third and the other Anderson, Jim R ., gra bbed fou rth. Moto number two was a near repea t of the first wit h Anderson taking another easy win. T hornton was once again second' while J im R . Anderson fini shed third. Tonight's Mini Expert race was very hotly contested. Newly crowed AMA Nationa l Cha m p io n La rry Ward (Team Kaw), who had just returned from T en nessee, faced off agai nst loca l hotshots Mike Crowell (Crowell Auto Parts) and another Yamaha ace, Del Sm ith . Ward too k both motos, but not without a fight from Crowell an d Sm ith . Crowell really had to charge the second moto, coming from dead last in both the Intermediates and Expe rts. CA, AUG. 7 Rodney Smith won the 125cc Expert class at the first northern Californ ia State Cham. p ion sh ip Qualifier at River- Mark Key and Aaro n Hill shared the spotlight in regu lar Saturday night short scratching tonight at Lodi Cycle Bowl. fro nt Park in Marysvill e, CA. Larry Wosick p ro ved himself to be th e top Expert in atte ndance by beating Smith in the 250cc cla ss for the win and then winning the Open clas s as well . In the 125cc Expert class , Cory Cantaloupi p u lled the holesho t, follow ed by Rich Morgan and Steve Vlahos (Suz), Ca n taloupi held first for a couple of laps, but Vlahos's pace was too m uch for him. Vla hos held the lead to the checkers, followed by Sm ith , who had charged through the pack after a poor start. Ed Minton and Willie Miller were th ird and fourth. Moto number two saw Vlahos get the holeshot ahead of Kimo Casey. Vlahos held the lead for a co up le of laps until Sm ith passed him. Smith took the ch eckered and the overall for the da y. Vlahos held second and third wen t to Greg Mich alic, who completed the Suzuki sweep. The first moto of the 250cc Expert class saw Wosick holeshot, followed by Rodney Smith and Dave Coupe'. Wosi ck and Smith rode first and second all moto wi th a good lead on the pack. Brian J ordry eventually overtook Coupe' for third; Coupe' finished fou rth. On the second moto, Wosick holeshot again and held first throughout the mota. Second place went to Smith who came from dead last after taking a spill a t the sta rt . Third went to Larry Co leman (Hus), fourth was Jordry. The Open Expert class saw Wosick take anot her holesho t, with Coupe' second an d Honda-mounted Jim Ellis third. Coming o u t of the back section, Wosick held the lead with Coupe' second and Charlie Smart th ird; Ellis had slid out. Wosick and Coupe' held the first and second positions 'till the end of moto one. Randy Pockrandt moved up to third and Elliscaught up for fourth. On moto two , Wos ick grabbed his fourth holeshot with Ellis right behind. Wosick held the lead to the flag, followed by Ellis and Pockrandt. It appeared as if a lot of th e rider s had pre-determined that ano ther race was hotter than this an d the turnout, while low, was of good q ual ity. Matt Wait continues not to wa it for the Pee Wee class to catch up, winningyetanother while Johnny McGill is keeping his name in the winning ranks by taking th e 80cc Novice honors over Billy McCleary . Jeff Bingham beat Shad J ohnson in a very close 125cc No vice race, while Dave Jackson won the 200cc Novice feature. John West and Rick Lovitt had a ro yal battle in the 250cc No vice with Lovitt un able to hold th e in side corners and slipping wide. Adam Sabedra had the 250cc Junior class win after a heat cras h that saw fire. Dana Douglas had suspe nsion troubles. Mark Key got out of the tapes with a good start and was never headed in the 250cc Expert ranks. Chris Carr chased the YZ home wit h some very close moves , but no luck . Joe Knight put on some fine passing for the last lap charge to take third ahead of Aaron Hill and Bruce' Johnson. Ken Jernigan had Rick Lovitt over his shoulder for the entire distance of the restarted 500cc No vice class, but took the all important checkered flag anyway. Joe Martins had to survive through the 500cc Junior main tha t had lots of problems, but won by a wide margin with Roger Hamilton, Rick Frisk and Dave Painter chasing. Aaron Hill and Chris Carr had a good thing going in the 500cc Expert battle with Hill leading all laps.on Mike Macedo's TT500. It all came to an end for Carr just three laps from the end when Black Plate number one, Dave Boyles, came barreling up through the packand tapped not-solightly on the door.' ! Carr was having some hook-ern-up troubles, but was sty ling off the number four corner when Boyles, braking late, gave Carr a rear wheel tap. Carr was dialed up on theigas. 45
