Escargot's Thad Wolff and Team Honda 's Roberto Pietri came out to the American Road Racing Association 's Willow Springs double points race and dazzled everyone with 1:34 lap times, but, true gentlemen that they are , they let the club racers have the points as Thad pulled in early and Roberto gave first place to Carry Andrew on his Hypercycle Kawasaki. Wolff and Pietri piloted a pair of RG500 Suzukis and diced it up pretty well in preparation for the Sears Point National. Len Gambo took another well deserved first place trophy in I 25cc GP after an excellent battle with Tom DeWitt and Barry Smallwood. Cycle Service-sponsored Gambo was shadowed by the two until the last lap, when a lappee got in the way. DeWitt managed to get by, but, unfortunately, Smallwood did not; he and the lappee collided in turn six and both went down unhurt. Second went to DeWitt. . It is rumored that Dylan will be sponsored next year on a GPz 550 by Eddie Lawson. In 750-0pen Box Stock, Terry Statum took an easy win, but Steve . Gardner and Mike Minnig in the 750cc class fought it out all the way , and in the end, Minnig was the victor by a very small margin. Battling for fourth overall were Mark Thomas and Chris Mencher, so close that they were side by side down the front straight. Thomas finall y took it for third 750cc. Hardick didn 't ha ve the luck that he needed in the final mota, and even though he knows the Carlsbad track well , he was still thrown off his Suzuki. Hardick placed fourth this time. Mike Tripes gassed his Husky in first place for four laps over Woody Carlson and Rick Johnson. The "T oo Hipp" kid was on the move and zapped Carlson on the uphill where he swapped around. Johnson took over the lead from Tripes and afterwards Rick stated, " It seemed like Mike just sort of let me by." Tripes . was bumped back to second place with Shoemaker moving up to third ahead of Hardick and Carlson. Tripes had a consistent 2-2 tally which earned him the top money over Johnson's inconsistent 4-1 tally, Hardick's 1-4 and Shoemaker's 3-3.
