The likeable eig hteen -year-old, w ho began h is racing career here in north ern Cal iforn ia as a J unior in 1976, came back to Auburn after finishing seventh in th e National Q ua lifying R ounds which began here just one week ago; L ucero earned himself a spot in the Na tional as well as the World Q ua lifier by finishing in th e top eight. If he was tired from the busy week behind him, there was no hint of it tonight. As the luck of the draw will have it , the toughest ride of the even in g for Steve was in hea t number one, wh ere he was to face h is toughest competition, Mike Faria, who is no t only number one in poin ts for the season, but finished number one in the Qualifying Rounds. At the ga te, it was Lucero on the pole and Faria on the wall. As the gates went up, Lucero made what was to be the first of five fantastic starts of the evening. The fact is he never knew what it felt like to be second. With Heat one completed and Faria wi thou t the perfect score that everyone had expected, the even ing took on an extra to uch of interest and exci temen t; let 's face it, anything could happen. Faria wen t on to win his next fou r even ts, making it look like a p iece of cake. T he cro wd loved itl Mike Faria will always be special in the North. Veteran rider Pa ul Orlandi won two heats and took two seconds and a third to earn him third place for the evening. Defending Champ ion Dennis Robinson settled for fourth . There was another Ch am p io nsh ip here at Auburn tonight, the No rthern California Jun ior Cham p ionsh ip, which , judging by the crowd reaction, could be credited with ad ding a lot of thrills to the eveni ng. Last year 's Cham p ion Bart Bast , who joins h is dad, brother and cousin Mike Bast on the big bikes next season, fell to bike problems which knocked hi m out in the fin al hea t. Cro wd favorite Scott Bra n t ma de a lo t of young fans hap py as he claimed the title of 1982 Northern Cal ifornia J uni or Cham pion .
