(Below left) Fritz Kadlec was another rider with four points; he was second AA Open. . Ithaca Dirt Riders, had more than its share of protests about the check · mileage being off, bu t when it was all over the A.A National Cham~lonshl~Enduro Series: RoundS Penton plays it smart in NY By Boyd Reynolds SPEEDSVILLE, NY, AUG. 15 ]ackPenton, aboard a Kawasaki Team Green KDX250, collected the overall win in the Speedsville National Enduro with a score of 14 two. The 100 mile event, sponsored by the club deniedthe protests and let the original finishes stand. Penton discovered the mileage was off one-tenth at the first ch eck. He adjusted h is pace to r ide on the last half of his minute to co m p ensat e for checks " th a t were lia ble to be a tenth ear ly." It paid off. At the noon gas , Penton sai d, " It's a th inker 's run. I'm go ing to gamble aga in with the second half. I've been running wa y back on my m inute in ord er to zero everything. If I hit a tig ht section, I' m beat. " Penton burned one check one minute earl y to pick up hi s two points. Suzuki's Jeff Fredette , KTM 's Da rryl Kuenzer plus Kawasaki Team G reen's Fritz Kadlec and Drew Smith eac h dropped four poin ts. The AA 200cc class win went to Fredette with th e AA Open class win going to Kuenzer. Husqvarna 's T erry Cunningham, the championship points leader, had a bad day, placing 14th overall. This ena bled Husky teammate Mike Mel- ' ton , who finished six th . to pick up some ground in the points chase. Cunningham leads 168 to 155. Bobby Thompson, a Husqvarna rider, collected the . High Point A award. Thompson 's score of seven placed him eighth overall. " T he trails are nice, but the run was much too easy for the AA class riders, " said Cunningham. " We ran 24 mph in the morning, but then dropped it to 18 mph for the afternoon loop. You expect to get your butt beat at a National, but here I can put it on cruise control and glide. The real problem though, was the check mileage being off. " The afternoon section was tightened up with the use of some long woods sections. However, by .dropping the speed average, the club made it too easy. When the scores were posted, the protests began flying. Kuenzer, Melton and Cunningham all protested the mileage at different checks. The 'j exclusion of an yone of the checks would have flopped the standings around. The final outcome was that the referee announced that all che ks could have been protested and that he and the AMA 's rep resenta tive had decided to let the run stand as scored. This was protested further to the AMA , but their ruling was to let the run stand as scored also. The time during the protests was taken u p by a raffle of items donated to the sponsoring club. Each rider got a ticket with his entry and there were plenty of items to go around for th e 240 ri ders wh o entered. John Fero, who took Ilthoverall, won a quart of oil and announced it was just what he needed for his van and the trip home. He promptly became the center of a lot of ribbing. The most novel award of the event was a fire ext inguish er donated b the Speedsville Fire Company. T lie Hot Check Award went to John Rigers. He earned it by hitting one check • ten minutes ear ly.
