Mike Kidd (Bu l) ha d pressured Gera ld until a coil bracket broke on h is bike with nine laps left' to go. Another Ossa rider, Mike Joh nson , bested Ted Poovey (Bul) to win the Junior race. In different parts of the country, drag race recor ds were being set. Riding a dou ble-engine Triumph a t Atco, NJ, Larry Wel ch lowered th e Top Fuel ET record to 8.81 seconds. In Indiana, a Norton in the hands of T.C. Christenson raised the speed record to 180.13 mph, but ironically lost the race he was in. Riding an MV Augusta, Giacomo Agostin i won the 500cc class in the Swedish round of the World Road Raci ng Championship Seri es. Ago too k about half the race to get around ear ly leader Rod Gou ld, who was ri ding a p unched-o u t Yamaha 350 twi n, but the Italian had little trouble wi nni ng. Agostini also won th e 350cc class, and Gould had his wa y in th e 250s. Derbi-moun ted Angel Nieto won th e 125cc race. Art Knapp (Hus) and T om Smith (Yam) finished 1-2 in the Dusters D37 hare scrambles. It was Knapp 's second overa ll win in the desert. John Hateley (Tri) took his fourth consecu tive Expert main event in weekly Asco t half mile action, leading from wire to wire. Another Triumph ri der, J un ior Dennis Kan egae, also won his main event. Rick H ocking (Yam) wo n the Novice main. In a m otocross at Motosport Park in San Antoni o, TX, Steve Wise wo n the 125cc Senior class over Tom Stoffel and Bill Law. The Open Sen ior class was won by Kent Howerton, wh o beat Steve Foster and Frank Peebles. __RAY Rex Staten used CZs to wi n th e 250 and 500cc Expert classes at a R.A .C.E. motocross at Corona Raceway. R unner-u p in the form er event was Doug Sh erman (CZ); in the latter it was Ken Zahrt (Bul). . Ivan ~auger won the British Speedway Fmal and thus qualified for the 1972 World Final, to be held in Londo n' s Wembley Stadium. Joining hi m from the British Final were N igel Boocock, Barry Bri ggs , John Louis and Eri c Boocock. T he two -strokes suffered defea t at the hands of the four-strokes during the weekly CMC Ascot motocross. First Bob Hosford rode a Bill Bell-tuned XL250 to the 250cc Expert wi n, and th en Bruce Baron rode a special SL 125 prepared by American Honda to win th e 125cc Expert class.
