Lackey wins World Championship ETTELBRUCK, LUXEMBOURG, AUG. 8 Suzuki's Brad Lackey used a 2-3 tally at the final round of the 500cc World Championship Motocross Series to take his, and America's, first World Championship MX title. Lackey ran second to Hakan Carlqvist (Yam) in moto one, with Andre Vromans (Suz) third. Graham Noyce (Hon) was in contention, but on lap one a spectator broke Noyce's left hand with a stick. , _ Carlqvist also won moto two, Franco Picco (Yam) was second, and Lackey was third. Vromans took a wrong tum off the start (towards an uphill which was omitted the first lap) and went from third to 17th. He finished an eventual sixth. Lackey headed the final point standings over Vromans, 228 to 217. Neil Hudson (Yam) was third with 186, followed by' Noyce at 176 and Andre Malherbe (Hon) with 121. American Gary Semics (Hon) ran 7-5 and finished the season seventh overall. Lackey told our European correspondent that he stayed behind Vromans as much as he could during the event, because when he was in that position spectators weren't able to throw bottles and rocks at him, which they did when he was out in the open. However, Vance never got close to the 200 mph mark - the drag strip's run-off area wa's so rough that the Top Fuelers only ran an eighth of a mile. Dale Walker (Suz) was the Funny Bike winner, and Dave Schultz and his two-stroke Kawasaki triple upset Terry Vance in the Pro Stock final. Previously, Vance lowered the ET record to 8.55 seconds. Rick Stetson (Suz) was the winner in Pro Comp, and in Super Modified, Yamaha Seca-mounted Joe Yeager blasted the old records to scrap with a 10.03/132.74 run. Sources in Honda 's racing dep ar tment say that even though Danny Chandler was rushed to the hospital followin g the Washougal National , his injuries don 't ap pea r to be serious. The 26th of September will be the day to be in Las Vegas, with exciting Formula One motorcycle road racing action roaring through the grounds of Caesars Palace. It 's the Coors/ Cycle News Formula One Motorcycle Grand Prix, and it will run in conjunction with the Caesars Palace Las Vegas Grand Prix, immediately preceding the Coors Can-Am auto race on Sunday. A $20,000 purse should draw a top field of riders. This is the first time a motorcycle race has been staged at this prestigious event. For ticket information, call 800/634-6661. What could be one of the hottest off-road events ever is scheduled for the middle of October. It's a 530-mile point to point raca, running from Las Vegas to Reno. The event is called the Frontier 500, and is sponsored by the Frontier Hotel, Coors, Reno's Peppermill Hotel 8t Casino, and Datsun. Registration and tech inspection for the High Desert Racing Association event runs Oct. 13-15, and the race will begin at dawn on Oct. 16 at Sloan, just southwest of Las Vegas. Motorcycles, cars and three-wheelers will compete, and financial analysts expect the event will bring over $12 million in revenue to Nevada. HosPITal STOP: Both Rick Hemme and Oakley rep Dana Duke remain hospitalized in critical condition at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, OK. They were both involved in the car-train accident that tragically claimed the lives of motocrossers Bruce Bunch and Kyle Fleming just following the NMA Grand National at Ponca City, OK. Bunch was bu ried in Orange, CA, on A ug . 6, while Fleming was reportedly cremated at his family's req uest . On a recent flight, Donnie took over the controls, but when the plane dropped too close to the ,water they were over Lisa took command. So ur ces in Europe sa y Kenny-Roberts will leave Yamaha at th e conclusion , of the GP season and sign a multiyear con tract wit h Honda. Reportedly, Roberts will contest th e Winston Pro Series for a year or two and th en become Honda's dirt track/road ra ce team manager a n d also participate in R&D programs.
