PHOENIX, AZ, J U L Y 31 Miller rolls - t Pro a In the Expert sweepstakes at Canyon Ra ceway, a freak acci- . dent left four riders to pack up during the first race, leaving Pair-a-dice GP By Ivan Summers ROSARITO BCH, B.C., MEX ., JU LY II Kent Miller showed the P rofessional Racin g Organ ization riders h ow it's done at this back country Baja layout, riding a very in tel'l igent race on his 250 Husky to earn the checkers at this seaside Mexican resort . Miller must have sa ved the best for the las t of the fou r 25-mile loops, going from third to win by a minute and a h alf. Miller sat by hi mself for a minute until everyone real ized what he ha d don e - he had st u nned the crowd with a dazzling ride! O p ting for a live engine start, the Pros went roaring around th e first sweepe r and with Larry Roeseler (250 Ya m ) in firs t position. First loop's end saw Bill H olmes (500 Hus), wh o had won one h ere in May , blasting down pit row with th e lead with Ken t Pfeiffer righ t on h im, and Roeseler in third. Miller wa s fourt h . Bi ll Mattox had h is 125 Yamaha screa ming and wa s in fifth. T hi rd loop woes saw Mattox 's spokes some how u nra vel, forcing his pace to slow. At th e end of loop three, Roeseler was begin n in g to reel in H olmes and the big Husky. Holmes left h is gas p it only to return after 100 yards or so . He arrived at the finish wi th one of h is socks stuffed between p ipe and tan k. Roeseler, taking h is slim lead into the last loo p . was for ced to a halt on the backside when a tra n n y bearing went away. "I th ough t I had it going prett y well and it just qu it." "That's what I get for running with a thrashed machine," Roeseler said. Meanwhile Miller was simply flying. "I knew I had it going really well on that last loop ," said the happy Miller. Things ended for the Pros with Miller winning followed by Holmes and then a fast closing Kent Pfeiffer. Scotty Atchinson had a fine effort in topping the 125cc field as did Mike Goodwin in taking first in Class 30. The duel of the day , however , was between Class 38 riders Da vid Miller (Ken t's dad) and Lynn McGraw. They alternated leads coming out of the pits and must have had some ext re mely close racing while running in sixth and seventh overall. There was considerable interest in this contest, So much so that the race officials, a n ticipating a high speed wheel to wheel run at the checkers, dropped the banner at the turn after the finish to allow for a straightaway to get things under control, Su ch was not to be. It was the red-clad McGraw who came alone over the rise and down to the finish. H e n eeded h elp to dismoun t and was contorted wit h pain. " I hit a rock with the from wheel," McGraw said, ad ding, " I'm pretty sure I broke my collarbone." H is diagnosis proved correct. Miller arrived a few minutes later. " I was trying to catch Lynn an d the chain came off." Results OPEN NOV: 1. Robert Johnson (Hon ); 2. Dean Stockwell (C-A). 250 NOV: 1. Jim Me ng (Yam); 2. Jamey Ornelas (Kaw ); 3. The ri de promised to be " a ride through some scen ic a nd little known back roads" with a backup tru ck supplied by JRC. It was a sum mer ride , but really o ne for all seaso ns and reasons.
