Scott Tyler, a Maico/Husky Northwest pilot, did the same in the Open class. The first 125cc moto saw a heated battle develop after only two laps had been completed. Eric Hall (Yam support), Corcoran and Ted Holt (D & S Cycles Suz ) were running one, two, three when the y reached the new tower jump. Corcoran decided he ' would try to out-jump Hall, but th e pass ended in disaster wh en all three riders wound up on th e ground after Corcoran 's mid-air correction auernpt failed. That left the coast clear for Kawasaki-rider Joe Spangler to sail to an easy win. Holt was up in time to get the second spot; Corcoran was . third. The second moto of the night was a Hall, Corcoran slugfest all the way with Hall holding the Yamaha of Corcoran at bay until the last lap. That's when Corcoran made his move with a beautiful pass on Hall to secure the win and overall. Hall finished a close second while Spangler brought his KX around for the third spot. In 250cc action , Tyler and D &.S Cycle's Ron Vandehey (H us) ran a strong first and second to secure those positions by the end of moto number one. Honda rider Rob Burkhart was third and Hubbard was fourth . Hubbard guided his Suzuki into th e lead of moto two and was long gone for the win, taking his first overall victory at PIR this year . . Burkhart was second in the moto and also second overall. Suzuki rider Kent Reynolds was third after both Tyler and Vandehey were forced from the moto with mechanical woes. Results PP: 1. Second went to another Mini-Expert standout Shad johnson, who also worked through the pack at will in his first sportsmen ride. John West stretched out a big lead in the 250cc Novice class to win over Rick Lovitt. West looks tohave a lock , on the class high-point for the series and should be moving into the junior class soon. Adam Sabedra, who surely will take the top 250cc junior high-point, once again smoked th e field and is only a couple of weeks awa y from th e Expert class. Sabedra looks to ha ve a lot of talent and sho uld keep th e Experts on their toes. Sepaking of tal ent, the 250cc Expert class was sma ll , bu t talented. Hill was abl e to pull awa y to a big win and Chris Carr worked from a bad start to second. This proved interesting because the two you ngsters are battling for .the top Black-Plate for 1982and will probably move into th e Pro ranks sometime next year. joe Martins made a last lap pass for the 500cc Novice/Junior win. Ken Jerr.igan was the top Novice. An added attraction was the Lodi King-of-the-Bowl race for. Expert~ . Great amateur racing at Mulkey Gold Cup By Brian Barnes McMINNEVILLE, OR, JULY 25 Mulkey ORV Park in McMinneville, OR, hosted todays next-tolast race of the 1982 Yamaha Perpetual Gold Cup; a better race couldn't have been asked for. Nearly 450 riders attended, track conditions were perfect, the .weather was great and of course, the annual Yamhill Yamaha Barbeque was a huge success, with hundreds of racing families attending the big night-before festivities. The Pee Wee Expert class saw Jeff Daily (Yam support) and Yamhill Yamaha's Grant Bergstrom battle for the first two spots in both motos. Bergstrom ran ahead of Daily the entire first - rnoto to take the WIn, Casey Jones (Yam) finishing third. In the second rnoto though, Daily moved ahead on the first lap and stayed in the lead for good, taking first and the overall. Bergstrom was a strong second and Oregon Yamaha rider Bri tt Woodring fo llowed in thi rd . The Mini Expert class saw some ho t racing between Scott Meyers (C hec k p o i n t Yam ), Scott Grim (T acoma Yam) and another Yamaha rider, Jamie Munson. Meyers rode co nsistantly for a first and second to tak e a very well deserved first overall, Grimm was second with his 3-1 tally and Munson rode 2-3 for third. Denny Fennel (MX FoX/Yam support) once again was best in the 100cc Expert class, riding flawlessly to both moto wins. Billy Welland and Jamie . Clendenon swapped second and third placings with Clendenon's second moto runner-up finish giving him second overall and WeIland third. The 125cc Experts really mixed it up in both motos, a number of riders having problems in one race or the other. Valley Yamaha's Vonn Jones was the winner by virtue of his 2-3 rides. Second went to Honda-mounted . Darren Monen while Fennel and Suzuki ace " Storm in' " Steve Oster each got to taste victory in one moto, but finished 10th in the other. Fennel was third overall with his second moto win while Oster was fourth after having some problems in moto two . Results WEE PEE WEE: 1. Jason Osborn (Yam); 2. Brad Brooks (Yam). PEE WEE EX: 1. CA, JULY 25 With the Northwest 'TT regional series a week away, many of the local Pros made the trip north for preliminary events, creating a light turnout at the Lodi Cycle Bowl tonight. Aaron Hill made the most of the night and took top money honors in the Expert classes with a second in the 250s behind Bruce Johnson. Hill also ran away from the field for the 500cc win. Six-year-old Matt Wait started things off with the Pee Wee win, this was a consolation as Matt took a trip to the hospital following a nasty crash in the BOcc Novice/ Junior race; Steve Rasmussen took th e win in th e short ened 80ce race over Ricky Gonzales. Larry Tofanell i came back after weeks of mechanical problems to take th e 125cc Novice/Junior win over Woody Rogers and Mikie Macedo who rebounded for third after a fallen rider nearly forced him down. John Westtook a convincing 250cc Novice win over Rick Lovitz. Adam Sabedra again dominated the 250cc Juniors, running away with the win; look for Sabedra in the Expert class soon. Second went to a familiar name; Winston Pro Series point-leader Ricky Graham's brother Troy worked from a bad start for second. Hill and Johnson had a good go of it in the 250cc Expert race before Johnson took the lead for good on the outside of turn four. Hill held on for second over Chad Felicio and P.J. Sanchez. Joe Martins held off a determined Jamie Mason to take the 500cc Novice/ Junior win. In the 500cc Expert class Hill ran and hid from the field , taking the win by a wide margin over Greg Gray. Whiting, Woolard wax Junction City FT By Clay Light JUNCTION CITY, OR, JULY 24 AMA Junior David Whiting put his D & V Electric/Yamahaof-Grants-Pass 500 into the winners circle today at J unction City'S 3/8 mile Flat Track, taking both the Open A and Open Pro classes. David Woolard also won two events, blasting to victory in the 125 Aand Lightweight Money mains. The Open Pro main is always a crowd pleaser and today was no exception. Whiting, Alan Busby, and Chuck Glender led off the line to head up the field. Whiting once again proved to have the fastest machine, his sano Yamaha 500 single, and pulled away from the 750s of Ken Percy and Busby. Whiting finished first, Percy second and Busby third. Chuck Glender, who laid it down hard one lap before the finish, remounted and retained his fourth place. The 125cc A and Lightweight Money mains were both Woolard runaways. The only difference between the two events was the race for second. Duane Keeney beat Steve Kindig to the finish during the 125cc A battle, but Kindig turned around the roles to take ' second ahead of Keeney in the Lightweight Money race. Where was Woolard?
