Klaudt, Magoo, Burgett take Gf;»ld Cup final . By Brian Barnes McCLEARY, WA, AUG. 1 With nearly 450 riders in attendance, the 15th and final race of the 1982 Yamaha Perp etu al Gold Cup came to an end today 32 at the ultra modern Thurston County O RV Park near Olym pia, WA. Much credit is due Bo b Lindsey and his Tacoma Motorcycle Club for running the event. The track itself featured a sand and clay composition with huge bowl turns and exciting jumps and wh oops. Dust wa s not a problem this year as Mother Nature provided off a nd o n sprinkles, keeping th e track in n ice shape. Seattle Honda 's Cory Klaudt, T eam Honda's Danny " Magoo " Chandler and Yam aha 's " L u m berjac k" R ick Burgett came away with the Pro wins in th e 125cc, 250cc and Open Pro races , respectivel y. The Open contest was the first professional race to be featured and , as th ey left the line, Hi-Point/American Honda's Robb Manning, Renton Yamaha's Chris Mori tzand Hi-Point/ Highland Honda 's Bob Bu ffa loe jetted into the lead. It wasn't lo ng , how: ever, before Chandler had put his Open works bike into the lead, just ahead of another Team Honda rider, Ph il Larson. Magoo and Larson were soon outdis tancing ever yone else and with two laps to go, Chandler had already lapped three quarters of the field. It looked like the victory was sewed up, but then disaster struck. A lapped rider tried to avoid Magoo's path and both riders went down on a highspeed downh ill. Th e wreck left Chandler's bike with a sh eared right fork and caused it to be shelved fo r the rest of the afternoon. Larson, who was in second, had no problem winning the moto, but a quick in spection after the moto showed th at hi s leg had made the wrong con tact with hi s Iootpeg, re- quiring sti tches and bench ing h im after th e first race of th e da y. Manning and Burgett finished seco nd a nd " third with Buffaloe fou rth ahead of Husky US A pil ot Eri c Eat on , who started dead last. In moto two , Burgett and Eaton dueled for the win, but Burgett was first across the finish line and first overall, adding one more win to the many he 's earned in the series. Eaton was second in the rnoto, taking the number two overall position while Moritz, Yamaha support rider John Christian, Jr. and Buffaloe rounded . out the top five in the moto and overall. Wh en the 250s left the line, th ere was no match for Chandler and hi s factory Honda. H e flat -out flew to both wins, riding lik e it was a Nationa l and never lett ing off. Th e show th at Magoo put on a lo ne wa s well worth th e p rice o f ad mission itself ; th e huge crowd lo ved every mi n ute of it. Second ove ra ll was Buffaloe with a 4-3 tall y. Comple ti ng the I , 2, 3 Honda sweep was Am or Honda / Bardahl Oil spo nsored Allan Dyck , down from Abbo ts Ford, B.C., Canada. Doing very well aga ins t a very co m petitive field were Airway Height 's Gary Kuest (Yam) and Jeff Haase (H o n ) fourth a nd fifth . Klaudt holeshot both l25cc motos and ran away to the flag both times to earn his first overall finish . Manning had a brief lead the first rnoto, but, Klaudt was not to be denied either win. Manning'sett led for second both times and Dyck completed another Honda sweep of the top three spots with a 4-3 finish. Eric Hall, a Yamaha support speedster, finished fourth (34) with Kuest an d Vancouver Yamaha /MX Fox /Bel-Ray ace Doug Lange, who has shown lots of potential as a first year Pro, taking fifth and sixth o vera ll.
