Olson, B erdyck take OT wins at Carlsbad By Bob Alloy CARLSBAD, CA, JULY 25 Carlsbad lived up to its us ua l reputation as the p lace to test bike and body and at the O ld Timers Carlsbad motocross, bike a n d body came o u t with su pe r ma rks for a few. For others? Well, there' s al ways next time. Those uph ill whoops seem to get dee per with every race. All th e Old Timers were started in the third race with two gates because of the light turnout. Ea ch mo ta was seven la ps and everyone was on the way home at 2:30 p.m. Tough and fast Marv O lso n , of the Masters Division , had no tro uble wi th all the uphill whoop and gassed h is Suzu ki 125 through it all sm ooth ly. H e took the checkered flag in firs t place in bo th motos. Dennis .Rosen burg took second in the first mota , but Marsh all J en n ings took runnerup honors in the second ro und, Bob Berdyck took a double win in the J unior Masters foll owed by George Spearing in the first mota, a n d Buzz Moeller was second best th e n ex t time. Expert Cal Browni n g ex pertly ma ne uve red his way to pi ck up first in both motos. Dave O ro zco and Asher Larnkjaer shared seconds. All th e Amateurs were lap ped by winner Gabe Guterrez while Bo b Alloy slid into second in bo th mo tos for second overall. The fin a l clean sweep of the day was in the No vice class. Next race Troy had the bad luck to drop it in tu rn four an d even th ough he went quick as ever, he co u ldn 't ca tch up. This time it wa s the other Mini ridden by Matt Stoutenburg in th e from spot, then Ron Ferguson and Rex Wessels. -, . ,'l )\ • ;_ ( V ,I The 250cc P ro class ran with th e 250cc Intermediates, but up from , it was Jeff Springman and Mike Kirby engaging in a brawl. Kirby LOok the lead, then came Springman, Orlando Lamboy and Jeff Ru n ya n . Coming to the end of the first round, Jeff dove under Mike in turn three and took the lead. In turn one, Mike took it back in no uncertain fashion! Next round, Springman took off first and Kirby went with him for awhil e, but it was no go and Jeff carried on, buildi ng up a nice lead at the end. Jerry Higgin bottom won the 250cc Junior class with two straights. Ed Abella was second-tz-S) and Charles Saunders third with 4-2. Todd Kissinger got a third first time out a n d then got into turn four LOa ho t a n d skated around so much that so mething had to ' have broken on him , and he pulled off while h e was in second p lace. CA 95670 There is no free lunch, nowadays it's called "Happy Hour." talk was about the Superbowl and what little sleep they had the previous night. , The lac k of sleep didn 't stop Open ' Pro Greg Zitterkopf from taking a hard earned first, after fighting off Eric McCracken and Mike Tripes in mota one, and again in rnoto two, as Mac and Tripes put on a real dici ng exhibition for the second spot, Mac holding off Tripes to the flag, Greg put on a real display of bikesmanship to win this one. He had to in order LO lead these talented riders all the way . Dale Lewis, Dave Eropkin and Bill Jewell fought like hell in both motos for the fo urth spot, finishing in the aforementio ned order. The 250cc contest left two very de jected young men in the persons of Andy Jefferson and Mike Tripes. J efferson led through most of mota one before his machine quit on him. Tripes LOok over the lead and wo n th e rnoto, but, after leading half of moto two, Mike's machine quit and Ga ry Bowman LOok the lead and win'. The 125s p u t on one helluva race as Pa t H u bbs LOok the first moto wi th Bowman second and Robbie Brown doinga great job o f holding off Robert No lin. The seco nd moto started off with Nolin looki ng li ke he was going to run away wi th it, bu t a few laps lat er Nol in found h im self running four th, as Bowman, Brown, a nd a tired H u bbs finally got around him and finished in that order.
