Mich ael Sta u ffer flat tra cked his wa y into fir st, but was soon nabbed by MXer Denny Burkett. The p air were fo ll o wed closel y by fla t tracker Richard Levin e, ISDE rider Wally Wilson and flat tracker Tim Bovee. Wilson was soon displaced by Bovee .an d, on th e next la p of the infield, Wilson made a hard charge to regai n his position. Wilson was for ced up on the inside bank of a ri gh t turn and landed on top of Levitte. Wilson recovered while Levi n e lay stun ned on th e ground. The race was h alt ed wi th a red flag and riders were lined u p for a staggered sta rt, with Levine pl aced third and Wi lson second from las t for causin g the infraction. For th e -next several minu tes parents, tu n ers and riders of the flat track crowd voiced their complai nts. When th e res tart was finally u n derw ay it got red-flagged for rid ers jumping th e gun. Again it was mass confusion as riders lined up for another restart . Burkett zip ped into the lead and ran to victory several la ps la ter. Stauffer and Levine follow ed in second a nd third, respectively, while Wilson gained o ne p osition to fin ish eighth . In th e O p en class Ralph Du n ca n ran a rep eat of his h eat race by leading from start to the ch eckered. Step hen Flach tried to pressu re Duncan from second, hut cras h ed a n d later retired. Stephen H yso n moved into second with Robert Wa tson in tow for third at the fin ish . The Open and 500cc class sidecars were run togeth er wi th Charles Gamber and Sta n ley Miles taking and holding th e lead u n til th e last lap, when AI Rea an d Craig Sears moved for first at th e fin ish .
