Hoel, Pieper bounce to win at Arena By Coach DENVER, CO , JULY 9 The regular track preparer at the National Western Arena was on vacation this week and it showed. The track could only 22 be described as " bloody awful " with ' sli ck spots, tacky spots, and tiger tra p holes. Despite th e conditions, the racers went a t it with more than usual fervor and put on a show that should have qualified most of th em for an all-expense paid vacation a t the gig gle academy of th eir choice. I' ve been around racing since Ken Mael y was making shoes out of car bumpers and I've never seen an yth ing like thisl The Handicap main was a wild affair with Scott Ormiston leading initially and Ri ck Steele inside never more th an a cou p le of inche s away. It went on like th is for a couple of laps despite the fact that they were bo th in the air more than on the track. Then the inevitable happened, minor contact going into turn three started chain-reaction contact all the way down the front straight, with neither rider daring to shut off for fear of launching one over the wall. Ormiston finall y dismounted rather un- _ gracefully at the end of the straight and th e race was red flagged. The referee decided that Ormiston should be excluded from the restart, but, after a great deal of angry arm waving, lip flapping and protestations of innocense, he relented and restarted everyone. Brian Hoelgrabbed the lead on the restart with Bill Walsh pr essing. Ormiston and Steele were charging hard while politel y avo iding each other. Randy Lamirande and Ken Pieper followed, fail ing to keep the sh in y side up long enough to see the checker. T he order remained th e sa me to th e finish desp ite many passing a ttem p ts that were cu rtai led by th ere simply being no via ble .su rface le ft for completion . T he Scrat ch main had Dave Pi ep er in to the firs t turn ahea d of bro ther Ken whi le Mike "the p u nk kid"Jau- don and Rick Steele fought over third. Dave 's lead d idn 't last as Ken found a bunch of tra ction during on e of his brief periods on th e ground and blew by. Dave (no t one to accept defeat gracefully) dove inside Ken and waited for a bobble that would let him by; it never came. Jaudon, meanwhile, put a move on Steele that couldn't be countered and beat him to the flag with oh, ma ybe six or eight inches to spare. Sweeton unbeatable at Auburn By Jann Houston AUBURN, CA, JULY 23 It was a somber kind of respect that kicked off tonight's speedway at Auburn. With the American Flag gently waving at half staff, and all the riders on the infield in the ir leathers, a moment of silence was observed and th e race was ded icated to th e memory of Denny Pyeatt who lost his life during a race at Hackney, England. Denny, who began his racing career right here in the north, and who had many times raced on the Auburn track, was loved and respected by his many friends and fans. As announcer Mike Rooney noted, those who were lucky enough to have known him are richer for it , those who didn 't missed out. Many a tear fell as Mike closed his very tasteful remarks, " Yo u can be sure that Rich MacMurray, Pat Rooney, and Denny Pyeatt are going to have one heck of a Scratch main up there!" Denny, we will miss yo u . Ron Sweeton, who has had h is share of bike problems this year , got himself a new sponsor - his girlfriend 's parents -and from the resu lts tonight, he seems to have gotten it all together. After winning his heat and semi, he took th e lead in the Handicap main, feeling more than a little pr essure from Steve Crawford . Reichardt, Y ork, tops at Visalia .By Sam Slidew ays VISALIA, CA, JULY 24 Chris " T h e Colorado Kid " Reichardt and-Dean York took advantage of the super sticky conditions at Visalia to walk away with all the gold. Because of the sticky track conditions, most of the scratch races were decided at the starting gate. From the very outset it was obvious that handicap racing was going to provide the crowd with probably the best action all n igh t. Tom Morley, York and Mike McDonald took the transfer spots from the first heat. Rocky Robinson, Reichardt and Jim Turner put on a good race for the transfer spot from the second heat. In the th ird heat it was Tom Hughes, Keith Larson and Dave Wendlendt rounding out the field for the semis. T ransferring from th e first semi were Morley, Turner and Hughes. Reichard t, York and Dragony rounded out the line-up for the main by making the transfer from their semi. In the main, York's 20-yard handicap was just too much for Reichardt to overcome from the 40. Reichard t had gotten through traffic on the fourth lap, but York had opened up a nice lead. All that was left for Reichardt to do was try to catch up. He came close on the last lap in turn three, but York was riding too well. Morley had been right on Reichardt's tail all this time and held on for third place. Cook, Lucero return t o win at A uburn By Jann Houston AUBURN, CA, JULY 30 The fans in northern California have never had a speedway season like thisl While the topic conversation in every beer and restroom line still center around the July 2 " Show of John Cook, " somehow promoter John Houston was able to get him back for a return enga gemen t. It was a little too close for comfort. tjrp~r-:i~~. .as• .r.~~ p'1~~<,; landed 45 m iles fro m the Auburn track just a lit tle more than an hour before race time. With a little jet la g from the long trip, and a little more tha n a normal beard, Cook arrived ready to give the crowd what they had come to see. The Handicap main is one th a i Steve Lucero will not soon forget ! Lucero got past Ron Sweeton in th e second lap for the lead and he wa s fast , smooth, and very aware that John Cook wa s behind h im . Behind Lucero, Duane Yarrow, Sweeton, Cook and Paul Orlandi changed positions faster than it could be written down. It was actually a case of Cook moving one position closer to th e lead in every lap. Sweeton held on to second until the th ird lap when Cook got past Ferris, Yarrow and Sweeton in a " clean sweep" to move into second. Lucero had no room for error, and on turn three of the fifth lap they were side by side. Lucero pulled out of it into the lead on tum four and the checkered flag was his. Cook was second with Yarrow third. The crowd was reeling from the excitement of the evening, and ready for the exciting finale, the Scratch main. Lucero's good luck in the Handicap main was not destined to be with him in this event. Coming off the wall as the gates went up, he went down in turn one and his night was finished. Orlandi, riding from the pole position, was in the lead for the first lap, with Cook second and Duane Yarrow third. On lap two, Cook in his own special style, "wheelied" into the lead, holding it to the checkered flag. He managed a little more Cook showmanship along the way, as well as giving the crowd a few " wheelie style" victory laps with the checkered flag . They loved it! Faria t akes fourth 'Napa t it le By Jann Houston NAPA, CA, JULY 31 Four seasons ago, rider Dennis Robinson started promoting Speedway in Napa, and for the past three years Mike Faria has been the Napa Track Champion. He won his fourth title tonight, with a perfect score of 15. In his first of five Scratch events, it was Robinson who gave Faria some stiff competition. In event eight, Mike's southern California roommate, Steve Lucero, gave him what was to be the tightest, closest, fastest race of the evening. When the gate went up, Lucero came off the wall position, right under Faria on the inside. As the four laps continued, there was never more than half a bikelength between them, and at the checkered flag Faria had it by less than a tire! The worst was over for Faria, from that point on he made it look easy , as he went on to his perfect score. Going into event 18, it was a tie between Steve Lucero and Duane Yarrow for second, both had a score of II. Lucero, on the wall , came out of the gate and was under Yarrow and into a clea r
