Maureen Lee GA R DENA, S A, AU.G. 5 The less said about track conditions at Ascot tonight as rid- . ers arrived for the weekly Continental Moto-sports Club short track the better. It was atrocious, but it did get better as practice progressed and the evening went down 'w ith the ' program woefully late in starting. Youn g Brent Bowers won overall in bot h races of the com bined 125cc, Mi ni an d Vet class. Ron Ferguson won h is Vet class firs t time out, but go t o ff in the second; th ey all ra n closer together firs t race than in the seco nd whe n the surface was sti ll very sli ck. Roger Thompson was back fro m getting experience on mid-west tracks and was again a welcome addition 'to t he Pro classes. In th e 250cc go , J eff Springman went shooting off with th e lead never to lose it. Bud Carroll fell in turn three and Thompson overhauled Mike Minnig to tak e second place. Behind, a remounted Carroll was having a marvelous time with Curtis Cannon and Jeff Runyan. The you n ger Cannon is very able to ride broth er Chris' eq u ip men t. Next race it was Thompson out front and hauling for many a lap, followed by Minnig and Springman, , Cannon and Carrol l. On th e last la p, Sp ri ngman saw his chance and go t by on the outsi de, h ead ing into tu rn three, a nd took home fir st pl ace. Good racing! The combi ned 250cc Interm ediat e/ J u nior gang had more tha n their share of restarts when they fell down or tangled ha ndlebars and cras hed. Dave Miller was leading overa ll when h is chain came off. H e fixed it quickly an d finished fo urth in -class. Brent Bow ers wo n h is division a nd overall , swa p pi ng p laces aroun d with Devon Farley. T he 500cc P ro s were wild and wooly, and so me who ride under AMA rules got a little co n fused when the red flag came o u t after half the race was ru n and th ey didn 't get a sing le file start. In fac t, th ey ran the whole race ove r. Bub Carroll took off a nd h eld fir st p lace aga in followed by J im Rosa, wh o had done the crashing with Dan ' Kane th e first time out. Curtis Cannon was wo rk ing h a rd and tagged onto Rosa 's rear wheel, taking th e secon d spot away from h im by going deep inside as they ca me around for the checkered flag. Next race , Kane got off in turn three, but, although h e and his machine were down th ere for quite a spell , n o red flag appeared a nd h e finally h ad to get himself into the infield. Carroll again had the lead, then Rosa, Cannon an d J eff Runyan. Results VET JR: 1. Jim Wells (Yam); 2. Ronald Ferguson (Yam). MINI JR: 1. Matt Statenberg (Yam). 125 INT: 1.
