r In -Ventur a - A u b urn - N al . AlIA WINSTON PRO SERIES AlIA . SANCTIONED Racew ay tonig h t before more than 2000 sligh tly delirious fans. In the mai n , Miller got yet a no th er awes o me start and cruised to an easy win as Alan Christian , Mike Faria and Gene Woods took turns passing each other behind him. After fo ur laps it was Miller, Woods and Faria. Ch ristian, after putting a dent in th e turn two crash wall, remou nted and was fourth. Miller's eight-po in t wi n ga ve h im 16 for the night, good enough for a tie with Faria and Christian, bo th of whom won more races overall. Gene Woods, who forgo t his leathers but not how to ride, wore a makeshift outfit with a duct tape num ber three on the back, and scored 15. Sh awn McConnell scored points wh en he had to on his best track and ended with 14. Miller - a virtual one-man cam paign to give th e valley some good in k - fared poorly early wi th two points after two rides. After that, he switch ed bikes and was unbeaten therea fter. At th e end of the 24 hea t races, Mi ller and seven other riders were all tied with five po in ts each, sett ing up a massive runoff with the eight going for one of the seven transfer spots. T h is fair example of democracy in acti o n , or on wheels, put the last man in each fou r-m an heat against the other in a special match race with the loser go ing home. Fillmore's Bobby " Insane" McLain, on h is home track, lost his runoff but sent Jimm y La wson packing af ter taking th e four-l ap match ra ce. Later McLa in was disqualified for· brea king the tapes on a false start o n a controversial call that left the big cro wd booing th e referee, and left McLa in with a dis appoin ting five points. Miller, in only hi s second year of speedway, looked as awesome as hi s pal Lance King did last year. To find ano ther rid er who ga tes as well , look to Bast, Christian , Faria and across the water to th e British Speedway League. Miller 's trip to the main was certain ly no fluke on a trac k wh ere he is a force to be reckoned wit h - espe cially in Scrat ch racing. Mill er ou tgated the best gater of all-time, Mik e Bast, not to mention the un beaten-tothis-point Sterl ing Cogar and T rack Champion Steve Lucero to win hi s semi. Miller, barring anyth ing awful happening, should finish in the top five. Next year , it could be " T h e Year of the Valle y" - look ou t! The track, specially ripped and regrooved for th e five bucks a point Big Event, was in fine shape with an inside and plenty of ou tside. The racing was fast and fro m a fan 's point of view, totally awesome with p len ty of passing and big track thrills. The only casualty wa s No rCa I rider Pa t Linn who clipped Christian 's rear tire and bro ke his colla rbone in the resulting crash. There were on ly four crashes all night , so who says Ventura is dangerous? T he season regulars generally fared well , while the un locals bit th e big one just like the y do every year a t Q ua lifier tim e. All this for th e opport un ity to be personall y thrashed by P enhall , Sigalos or Mo ran on Oct. 9 - wh o wo uld' ve thunk it?
