Chris Carr from Manteca ona fast Can-Am showed up to do battle with the local talen t and looked very, very good, emerging ' with two straight seconds behind Pete's two firsts , but it was back a bit wher e most of the ac tio n was going on. Orlando Lamboy was having a great deal of fun stuffing his front wh eel under John Sperry on several occasion s, giving the Class C Expert so me thi n g to think a bo u t. Tate topples Dl!nes Mini regulars By Tom Corley VALE N CIA, CA, JULY 16 With the start of the Maico/ Crossline Summer Series at Indian Dunes, Mini track participation has been down a tad as so me riders race on th e International tra ck. Tonight there was a short but swe et Mini track program with a fine battle in the 80cc Stock Junior 12 and over contest. Kenneth Tate got away from his desert town of Mojave for th e even in g and took the top trophy. Tate has only raced at the Dunes once or twice before, but he was still abl e to upset the regular line-up of riders. Ken is a consistent rider at Sunrise Valley Cycle Park where .he has taken his fair share of wins. Tate took his Lancaster Yamaha to the lead in the first moto ahead of Troy Cline and " travelin g" Matt Harrison. All three riders were on Yamahas. On the track at the same time were Troy Welty, the only 80c~ Intermediate. and Charlie Jones, the 80cc Junior 9-11 rider. . A three-man race took place in the final rnoto with Tate leading the r group, Welty running in second with Cline chasing Welty/Welty's Suzuki was definitely having some. engine problems, and it started sputtering around the finish line area. H e dropped back to third and let Cline pass him. On the next lap, Welty regained the lead, and Cline pulled off th e track as if he were tired of the confrontation. Welty slid out 'o nce and later stated. " It locked up!" Nobody could touch Tate. who controlled th e lead position. When Cline pulled off the track.-Harrison inherited second place.
