Griewe, Bollin battle to Corona ' night MX wins By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, JULY 9 In tonight's 25'Occ Pro action at Corona Raceway's MX, Suzuki's Don Griewe took home top dollar after dicing with Honda of Pomona's Andy Northrup. . When the gate dropped.at the start of moto one, Griewe's quick clutch work enabled him to holeshot inches ahead of Northrup, John Mazzacane (Suz) and Tom Bridgeford (Hon). Griewe held the throttle wide open as he stretched his lead inch by inch. Northrup, a one-time ruler at Corona Raceway, recently has been giving speedway a try. He has returned to the motocross scene. However, Griewe's experience at Corona gave him a slight advantage as he roosted on to victory. Northrup settled for second while Mazzacane and Bridgeford had to be content with third and fourth. Griewe launched his Suzuki to the front of the second moto pack while Dallas Rebello (Hon), Northrup and Mazzacane watched from behind. It took Northrup three laps to get by : Rebello, but it was too late to catch the flying leader. Mazzacane also managed to find a way past Rebello, and the rest of the moto was a carbon copy of the first. Griewe crossed the finish line first ahead of Northrup and Mazzacane. In Division One of the I25cc Beginner class, Dale Bollin (Kaw) edged out' the victory ahead of Gus Kopp (Yam) after the two leaders traded rnoto wins. Bollin won the deciding second rnoto after he passed Kopp on the second lap and never looked back. TOdd Peterson had to come from behind in the second moto to defeat Anaheim Suzuki-backed Rich Collins for the overall win. In the Open class, Gary Gonzales held off Frank Steiner in both motos. Through at least summer, the Pro pa yback will be increased to 133% of the entry fees beginning July 15. He piloted his Yamaha to a 2-1 score to better Ceet-sponsored Ryan Roberts, who finished with a 3-2. Bill Clemson, who won the first moto, was, third overall after a fifth placefinish in moto two . The 250cc Intermediate class went to the consistent. In the first moto, Carl Reed and Pat Killam exchanged the lead several times with Reed taking the win . In the second rnoto, Larry Gross, after a seventh in the first moto, held off all challenges from Reed. Killam had a poor start and couldn't work his way up in the tough field. Paul Fit z-Gibbon, with a pair of threes, was second overall behind Reed 's 1-2 tally . Larry Gross was third. In the Open Intermediate class , Jeff Conlin overtook the group on his Husky. Second went to Leo Saul on a Yamaha and third went to our perennial late entry, Karl Holmberg. Results 60 BEG: 1. Mi ke Reiley (Yam); 2. Joey Winston (Yam). 60 NOV: 1. Tripes flies at CMC Saddleback MX By M ike Klinger ORANGE, CA, JULY 4 Pro Circuit Products' Mike Tripes (Hus) continued his winning ways for Mitch Payton by topping the Open Pro class at the Continental Moto-sport Club's points event at Saddleback Park and placing third in the 250cc class. Steve Rhyan (Hon) scored a2-1 in the 250cc class to outrun Robert Reisinger (Suz) and Tripes. In the 125cc Pros, Chappy Blose (Hon) made a sneak appearance and won the class with little problem. It was the only points race for July at Saddleback Park, and the Pro turnout was good. Twenty-five anxious 250cc entrants lined up, including current points leader, Yamahamounted Woody Carlson. Tripes nailed down the first turn with superhot Rhyan hot on his heels. By lap one, Rhyan took the lead with Tripes and Reisinger trailing. For 14 laps the front positions never changed. Tripes tried everythig he could to get by Rhyan, and on the very last lap, Tripes put a good inside drive on Rhyan and took the win. Reisinger was third, then Eric Baker (Hon) and David Gerig (Hus). Rhyan was flawless in moto two. He took the lead right off the start, and no one could come close. On lap four, Tripes and Reisinger were in a heated duel, and both riders hit the turf. Reisinger regained his third place position, but Tripes had starting problems and pulled back to eighth. By this time, Rhyan was off in the dust. Rhyan won easily and won the overall also. Reisinger went 3-2 for second overall with Baker third in moto two. Tripes slowed due to a flat rear tire. Tripes' finish in moto two still awarded him third overall. Just coming off the National circuit, Maico-rnounted Scott Johnson put his 490 in the winner's circle in moto one of the Open Pros. Greg litterkopf (Yam) and Tripes took the early lead over the 13-rider field and began to pull. PCP teammates Dave Gerig and Tripes really pushed and shoved for third with Tripes prevailingon the new 500 Husky. On lap 12, Zitterkopf ran out of luck. A flat rear tire pushed the ace to fourth at the flag. Johnson held on and won with Tripes second. Third went to Gerig, then Zitterkopf.
