That time was a 7.513 wh ich now made the previous pass an official record. His final speed wa s 177.51 mph, not enough to brea k Mike Bru so's 177.86 mark. The ET record in Funny Bike ha d been Ken n y Blackburn 's since Septem ber , 1981, when he turned in a 7.75 The record made everyone in Kizer 's corn er h app y. If anyth in g, it was too quick for the tea m. " We're in th e hunt for th e title," said MTC En gi neering 's Ken T ip ton , Kizer's main sponsor. "Each record is wort h 2000 points, so we wanted to save a little for the next rou nd in English town , but I guess it's goin g to be h arder to beat this one now because T erry j ust put in the p ro verbial pe rfect ru n ." Kizer said the track conditions hel ped in setting th e record. "T h ere's so m uch more traction in those meets where we run with cars, th a t I bogged th e bi ke in the first p ass. Now I have to let the cl utch out eas ily at 5,000 rp m ins tead of th e 3,000 ta rget I use with th e usual gear in g set-up." Vince Santan gelo , who co u ld no t hope to chall enge Kizer after his blazing pass, ad ded th a t air density ga uges had also gi ven out imp ressive figu res a t Sanair and th at the tem pera tu re was o n the cool side co m p ared wi th meets in th e U.S . But all was n ot perfect aft er Kizer smas hed th e ET mark. New York 's Jon Ba ugh , who wo u ld eventuall y reac h the final and ru n agains t the 25-year-old Texa n , wa s disappointed at not being abl e to challen ge th e blown nitro-bu rn in g machines on his alcohol-fed turb ocharged Ka wasa ki nicknamed " Orient Exp ress." Baugh is sponsored by Kosman Specia lties/ Mr. T ur bo / Sim pson/ VHT / Castre/ APE . " I kn ow ho w much it means to achieve wha t T erry j ust did, believ e me, a n d in that sense I' m h a p p y for him. Bu t a t the sa me ti m e," Baugh added, " I cannot help but be u n happy about the new rule allowin g blown bikes in th e Fu n n y Bike class. They hav e too m uch of a horsepower advantage over us. I do n 't kn ow if I' m going to change m y mach in e or figh t the rule, but one th in g is su re , it can 't sta y like th is." The elimin a tion p ro cess in th e fin al s was mad e m uch less exci ting when Kizer turned in a sp otless run a t 7.513/ 177.51, puttin g Georgia 's Israel out of contentio n . H is time was a rela tively slow 9.039/ 136.57.
