Dow ney, CA 90242... Ed itor. U.S. speedway pen pal requested I wonder if you cou ld find room on yo ur speedway page(s) for a request for a n Am erican speedway pen pal? I am a woman aged 21 who is a keen speedway fan since th e age of three. I follow Cradley H eathens, the British League Champions 1981, who include in their team members World Champion Bru ce Penhall. Ev er y letter will be an sw er ed wh ether it's a quest ion, a query o r a swap - photos, badges or program mes. Thanking yo u in a nticipation. MRS. LYN HEATHCOTE 7, West Street Stourbridge West Midlands DY8lXN England Animal hater I wo u ld like to address thi s lett er to Mr. Livermore and a nyone else concerned with our future. Need yo u ask what happen ed to Deep Cre ek? Wh at happened to Pi smo? What happened . to most of th e desert? - The animals took them aw ay ! Not th e sta te of th e Feds , no govern me nt agency, th e animals. I'm talking about th e off-road partiers who seem to th ink th e only wa y to have fun is to tak e th e four-wheeler or load up th e car or truck wi th d irt bik e or three-wh eeler a long with th e 10 cases o f beer, th e pou nd o f g rass or th e ja r of wh ites or a ny com bi na tio n of th e a bove, go out a nd try to des troy someth ing! I have seen it ma n y times; you m ust have seen so met hi ng destructive to th e image of o ff-roading! I' ve been off-roadi ng since I was eight. I have seen a lot of good people devo te a lot of time acquiring and keepi ng the la nd we have now. I don 't thin k th e ani mals realize how easily we ca n lose tha t land. Look what's happened in the last two yea rs. We've lost a bunch ! I th ink off-roading is in its worst image crisis ever! Something of th e nature of Bra ndo and th e WiLd Ones and what th ey did to street biking in the '50s. We don' t need the image o f the doped-u p a ni ma l o ut to destroy . Also, do yo u think th e a n ima ls rest whe n yo u pa y good money to wat ch th e races at the Carlsbad USGP or Laguna Seca? My wife and I were literally driven out of our tent at 3 a .m. at Laguna by mangy mutts exp lod ing fireworks above us, riding around the tents on th eir bikes and screaming at each other at the top of their lungs to surpass th e noise of the 200 decibel stereo system! These are humans? Or the clowns th rowing firecrackers" dirt clods or ice, etc., on innocent people and security at Carlsbad ! These are off-road ent h usias ts? Wh at a n image boost. No Mr. Livermore, th e off-road enth us iasts didn't lose Deep Cr eek; the an imals got it! Who set the odds for th e Laguna Seca (Na tio na l road ) race? Does this person even follow th e series on road racing? This personowes Thad Wolff an apology. H e put Thad at roo to 1 odds and th en followed with a derogatory com men t. Thad beat all but five of th e 18 riders listed in the odds. Thad even lapped some of the other riders listed a t better odds. Several riders wer e listed with the sa me odds, Thad being th e on ly o ne a t roo to 1 odds. Thad is th e best privat eer in superbikes a nd Formula One. H e's co nsistent, hi s mech anics th e fin est . bu Thad is riding dated eq u ipme nt. With this dat ed eq u ip me nt . h e ha s even beaten factory riders. The person who set thes e odds isn 't even qualified to set the odds in a knot tying competition at a Boy Scout jamboree for Bo y's Life Magazine! We feel Thad should be compen-, sa ted in print. JANIS SCOTT, GLENN SCOLf MIKE McDONALD. FRANK OWENS, DONNA MADDOX. :T The Laguna Seca odds, printed two . weeks ago in issue #26, were picked up from a Laguna Se ca press reLeas and were intended onLy as entertainment, not as a serious odds-makin g chart...Ed itor. - T . NADRATOWSKI San Bernardino, CA P .S. Did you ever wo nder how the American Indian felt a bo u t 1870? Road race fan in f o Congratulations on a fin e section yo u put in Cycle N ew s every week . I. like many I'm sure. cannot read further into the paper until we've com p letely 'read your section and got ca ug h t up on the latest word from you. Thanks! I was wondering on two matters which I think you could help me on. First , have you heard any more on Kenny Roberts ' book? I've been trying to find it everywhe re but ca n ' t. Do you know th e name of th e publishing com p nay? Second. do yo u know of any road rac ing organizations in th e T exas area or eve n close? I would very much like to race h ere but can ' t seem to find an organization th at sanctions events here. If you co u ld help me out on th ese two questions. it would be gr eatl y a p preciated. Thank you very much for yo ur tim e a nd keep u p th e good job. ' O h ! By th e way, have you hea rd any more from Bruce H am mer on hi s co ndi tio n?
