McCo nnell, coming from the 40 at IMS for the very first time, p ut th e heat on Woods and went by for th ird coming out of four on lap four. Hawley happily claimed th e chec kered flag after his third perfect ride ah ead of Burba and McCo n nell. Greg Ayers (Wes), riding fro m the 20, narro wly won his first IMS Second Division main of th e season. Mark Gran berg (Frog House Jawa ) too k the initial lead fro m the zero in h is firs t IMS Second Division main over Steve Fla nagan (Jawa ). Ayers, wh o bega n movin g through the pack at the start, took second from Fla naga n at the end of lap two with Ron Blan ton (Cas trollBell Wenn Jawa) getti ng Flanagan for third on la p th ree. lAyers began to reel in Granberg and fin ally caugh t the you ngster when they made contact in turn th ree on the fina l circu it. Coming out of fo ur, it was a drag race with Ayers on the in side bea ting Granberg by one foot at the checkered with Blanton ending up a close th ird. The wi n was the second on the night for Ayers. Sixteen-year-old Jim Busby of Balboa Island made his professional debu t and easi ly won the Third Division main. Busby, after ha ndily winni ng his hea t race , was first out of the ga te over Mike Dwyer (Jawa) and rTrace Will is (Jawa ). Busby im medi a tely opened up a lead and was still expanding it when Willis, Dwyer and Mike Coniglio (Jawa) got toge ther in turn three on the thi rd revolu tion , causing a red flag which ended the race.
