Ingels impressive at Visalia By Jerry Parsons VISALIA , CA, JULY 3 It was a night early for fireworks, but Eddie Ingels returned to the Visalia Auto Plaza to blast away the competition. Ingels was quick to take command as he grabbed the Scratch main holeshot. Tom Morley and Buddy "Bud Man" Robinson wasted little time in putting the pressure on Ingels. Grant Salyers made th ings tough as he moved under the "Bud Man" to challengeMorley. Robinson, wanting very little to do with fourth position, slipped back into third. Ingels continued his dominance to the checkered . Morley took the runner-up spot with Robinson and Salyers taking third and fourth . Scratch consolation blasted out of the hole with John Foster leading the pack. Jeff Tomlin and Tom Ferris diced for second. Ron Blanton was running a hard fourth before going down in tum three. Foster's lead was being heavily challenged as Tomlin pushed his limits. Foster's luck soon ran out as his bike caught traction and sent him into the hay bales. Tomlin went on for the win with Ferr is taking second. Ingels was again in the spotlight as he was paired up with Robinson for a " Kin g of the Hill " grudge race. Robinson shot off the line to take the holeshot in the first of three rounds. Ingels made the challenge and moved under Robinson for the lead . Ingels had a fight but held tight for the win. Robinson wasted no time in grabbing another holeshot as Ingels gave chase. The " Bud Man" was in good form as he headed for a second round win, tying the score. The third and final round would be the decider as Ingels jumped into the lead . Robinson hung tight trying to make a move, but the short two-lap races weren't long enough. Ingels went on to take the win. Crawford, Robinson hot in Auburn By Jann Houston AUBURN, CA, JULY 9 Handicap main after winning h is first heat and making his transfer from the semi, he was into the lead like he 'd been shot from a cannon. Tom Ferris ga ve h im a race for the first lap as Buddy Robinson worked his way from the back of the pack, making it look easy as he took Ferris on the outside for second on lap two. At this point, Ferris dropped to fourth as Paul Orlandi moved up to th ird. Crawford, in his black and red leathers, was fast and smooth as he continued to hold and extend his lead, taking the checkered nag as his large fan club went wild! Northern California 's number one, Buddy Robinson, had to settle for second. Remember the name, Steve Crawford, he has a promising future in speed. way. The Scratch main was the kind the fans come to see - fast, close and exciting. Duane Yarrow took the lead from the pole position with Buddy Robinson coming off the wall for second. It was a side-by-side, tire-totire encounter in every tum, bringing the enthusiastic crowd to their feet. Paul Orlandi and Mike Delacy completedthe field . In tum two on lap three , Robinson went under Yarrow, taking the lead in the close crowd thiller. Robinson won his first 1982 Auburn Scratch main event. Chico, California's Ken Gray made it two in a row with his win in the Second Division main. . Kevin Krugh, a recent newcomer to speedway, won the Third Division main in a close one, thanks to Jeff Brown, who took second. Bart Bast, northern California's number one Junior, won his first heat and came back to take the lead from last week's winner, Bobby Hed.den , on the third lap for the win in the Junior main. Hedden held on for second, John Houston, Jr. was third. Northern California speedway expands to the beautiful Napa Wine Valley, opening July 17 at the Town and Country Fairgrounds. Steve Crawford made his Firs t Division debut and left no question that he was ready. Transferring into the VALENCIA, CA, JULY II By Scott Daloisio Junior Speedway's version of fect 12 points at the Indian Dunes short track this afternoon. Corey (D & F Cycle) gave a demonstration of the way th ings were going to be on the hot afternoon when he ran away from the field in event number one. Marshall Topping shocked everyone when he defeated a field that included Greg Hancock, Bobby Cody and Jordan Duncan in event three . Corey next came up to event six w.here he met)lp with Gene Toppmg, another first round winner. The fast Fullerton youth again made it look easy as he won over Alan Christian look-alike Duncan and Topping. Marshall Topping closed out round two by defeating Warren Wilson and Trinon Cirello in event eight. At the end of two rounds, Corey and Marshall Topping were tied for the lead with six points each with Greg Hancock third with five points. Corey came back and downed Hancock and Bobby Cody in event 10, while his brother Scott defeated Dave Busby in event II. Nine-year-oldRyan Evans pulled off a major upset when he was the first rider to defeat Marshall Topping and put an end to the third round in event 12. Corey was one point ahead of Topping going into their final round showdown. It all ended quickly in event 13. As was the case all day long, Corey was the first rider in to the first corner and the first rider to the checkered nag ahead of Marshall Topping. Gene Topping's win in event B combined with Greg Hancock's second place showing in event 15 put them in a tie for third at the end of the afternoon with nine points each . Amy Alvarez {Ol. ; DeTemple deBest at deVeiltura Raceway By Bill Locey VENTURA, CA, JULY 13 It was a night to separate the real baseball fans from the real speedway fans. Even though in the past speedway had been KOed by Sugar Ray Leonard and slam dunked by the Lakers, the Commotion by the Ocean did not strike out when it went head to head with the All Star game. More than 1000 racing fans tonight made the only logical choice and came to speedway at the Ventura Raceway. Unfortunately, the racing was as uninspired as the baseball game almost. In Handicap heroics, Chris Reichardt made his long-awaited and well-deserved D-I debut and did just fine. He won his first two rides off the zero-yard line, including a squeaker over the " Bud Man," Buddy Robinson . Besides Reichardt, Denny Scopellite also entered the main unbeaten following two easy wins. Warren Diem looked good in winning his heat, but a last-lap sick bike prevented any further left turns for the night. And Guy Ermolenko had the crowd in his comer by riding like a maniac on the outside - passing riders like they were on mopeds. The Handicap main was the best race of the night, a not unusual occuranee. Reichardt enjoyed a Sunday cruise Ior the first few laps even as everyone else was frantically pass ings and being passed. Scopellite cut underneath Reichardt on the third lap and seemed headed for the win. But the Bud Man , in a memorable display oft crazy riding, caught Scopellite in th tum three of the last lap and got by and won the race to the line for his second Handicap win here. Is the Bud Man dedicated or what? He drives from Salinas for all this ! Scratch racing was a little different - Mike Faria didn't win the main, although he did win his heat and semi . Dave DeTemple, in his best . showing in a while, did Faria one better and won three Scratch rides. In ? the main, Mike Curoso got the gate, but DeTemple beat him to tum one on the inside line, and that was the race. Faria managed to pass Curoso on the third lap for second. In the Shark Attack Dept.: Former Ventura Shark, Scott Sivadge, in his best Tuesday night moves in years, made the Scratch main for the first time in a long time. In the Owie Dept.: Jimmy Lawson's primary chain broke in a Scratch semi race and whipped his leg. He was helped off the track and was history for the night. In Second Division racing, Bart Onasch, Jimmy O 'Dell and Rick Smith (remember him?) were heat winners. In the main, mechanical s problems eliminated two of the three zero-yard-line riders (Smith and S Onasch), leaving blue skies and green ul lights for thewinner, Russ Romero. J Bob "Outrageous" Ott, last after two laps, fought back with some quick i riding and plenty of wheelies to make it close at the' end. ..I In D-3 action, Will Harper's Ventura Raceway unbeaten streak snapped at three straight when the guy with the memorable name, Bentley Barrett, passed him on the third lap ~ J; to win the Third Division main. Bar- il rett, in the process, looked more than ready for Second Division. ~ And finally, something really weird happened, actually didn't happen. The last rider in the last turn of the last race before intermission - John Foster - slid out easily after over- , cooking it going in. That was the only crash of the night! Hopefully the connection between crashes and excitement on the track is nonexistent. J Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Dave DeTemple; 2. Mike Faria; 3. Mike Curoso; 4. Scott Sivedge . ' HANDICAP MAIN: 1.
