bikelength s difference.
The pair went moto long in th is
fashion, Friend unable to pull aro und
and Molder unable to get brea th ing
room, until the last two lap s, wh en
Mo lder made his first - and last mistake. From either fatigue or sligh t
men tal lapse, the leader went into a
bad line on a short straig ht, and
Friend immedia tely jumped all over
him, shooting into the lead by the
end of the stra ig h t and ho lding it to
the flag. Molder rolled in for second,
whi le in the ba ttle for third Parmely
overtoo k H ildera nd, and Rice had to
settle in for fifth .
Round two saw Molder aga in grab
the holeshot, with the same top five
stringing out behind. Frie nd began
ap p lying the same pressure early, bu t
thi s time ou t Molder rode smoother
and more contro lled and was doing a
m uch better job of fendi ng off the
charges of Friend. The flag finally
came with the leaders still Mol der
then Friend, while Hilderand slid past
Parmely to take th ird in bo th the
rnoto and overalls, with Rice again
tailing in fifth .
Kelly O lson had little troubles with
the Ope n class , as he holeshot and
ran away with bot h of the rnotos.
The real battle was for second, as
Mark Neu man and Perry Bicek went
bar to bar in each race trying to take
the runner-up slot. In the first moto it
was Bicek rolling in behind Olson,
with Neu man , Ken Miller and Ri ch'
Wooley rounding ou t the to p five,
but in ro und two Neuman made th e
late charge to tak e second away from
Bicek, aga in with Mill er an d Wooley
coming in four-fi ve.
Olson returned to take the holeshot in the first I25cc Pro mo to, with
Stork and Friend close behind . Coming out of the first tum the trio were
neck and neck, but by the third com er
Stork ha d wrestled con tro l of the
action. From there it was no match
for the lead, and the Coyo te roo sted
his way to the checkers virtually
uncontested. In second, Olson held
off the p ressure of Friend to earn th e
runner-up slot at the wire, while Kurt
Hyde nipped Shannon Ivey for fourth .
Stork ret urn ed in the second moto
with a holesho t, and again he put on
a raci ng clinic, running off with the
moto and overall. This time Fri end
took early control of second , and
O lson had to find the line around,
but he cam e up too short, as Fri end
held on for the second rn o to and
overall position. Ivey and Hy de again
dueled for fo urth , but Ivey came out
with the better finish in th e moto,
giving him fourth in the overalls.
In some wi ld Enduro class action,
Jake Haffner ran away wi th the first
moto while Kim Bendigo and Steve
Dale traded ha ndlebars and headlights
for second, bu t in moto two H affner
lost control of his big XR500 an d
bailed in a section of wh oo ps. This
gave Bendigo the lead, wh ich he hel d
to the wire. H affner remounted an d
repassed Da le by the en d of the race
for the runner-u p rnoto and overall
score.

Barnes, Newberry
highlight Suntana
night MX
By Eric Raits
SP RINGVILLE, UT, JULY 2
The Vince Barnes-Casey New berry act has become a feature
at Suntana's n igh t motocoss.
The speedy and stylish Suzuki
riders swapped leads four times in the
first 80cc Amateur 12-15 rnoto until
Barnes missed a shift and gave Newberry breathing space at the flag .
Barnes got out front in the second
rnoto and left Newberry back in the
pack, which consisted of Mark Olsen.
By the time Newberry could get in
front of Olsen, Barn es had a good
lead and was relaxing out front.
Newberry knew he had to beat Barnes
for the overall win and made up an
impressive distance on the last lap to
finish a bikelength back , making it
Barnes, Newberry and O lsen overall.
No vice Kyle Spencer found himself th row n in among th e Ama teurs
in 11 and under 80cc racing because
of a light rider turnout and promptly
too k th e first moto after Selb y Bringhurst fell in a pass attempt. Spencer
looked calm on the outside in a n ice,
deliberate ride. Bringhurst got a bad
start in the second moto but didn 't
fall , and that made the difference; he
was able to pass Spencer and Brook
Beckstrom to save fa ce fo r the
Amateurs.
" Whoever gets the holeshot will
probably win it," said Roger Zeeman
before the 125cc Experts started. Zeeman watched Kenny Ulibarri get a
pair of holeshots and a pair of wins
from the vantage point of second
place, while Ulibarri occasionally
turned his head during a full-lock
slide to see if Zeeman was gaining
ground. He wasn 't , and Ulibarri went
undefeated for the night.
Bruce Carlisle was clea rly the fastest 125cc Amateur with a pair of
strong wins. Jay Day trailed Carlisle
out of striking distance for most of
the race while Jim Quist crept into
third after a fifth-place start.
In the second and deciding rnoto,
Quist was able to keep Day at bay in
spite of Day's intimidating highberm passing tries. Carlisle was first,
Quist second and Day third.
Arlun Ault faced stiff opposition
from Bryan Allred in 250cc Expert.
Allred won the first race, losing mo st
of his en gine power o n the last lap
and pedaling across the finish just
ahead of Ault, Allred ran secon d
behind Ault for a few minutes in the
second -m o to on ly to finish holing a
piston and drop out for the night.
Dean BroOK took second, and Dave
•
Donaldson was third.
