Upgrade inspires Wilson at Suntana night MX By Eric Raits SPRINGVILLE, UT, JULY 9 Promotion into a tough group of Amateurs did nothing to deter hot-riding Butch Wilson tonight at Suntana night moto- 42 cross action. Riding his first 250cc Amateur rnoto, Wilson led off the start and spent the entire race in first with a comfortable lead over Jeff Barnes and Stephen Fullmer. Barnes and Fullmer, second and third overall, spent the night side by side wrestling for the runner-up spot. Asked how he has managed a remarkable string of holeshots in the last few weeks, Wilson explained, "Concentration on the , clutch and throttle. I used to just watch th e starting gate and dump the clutch with full throttle. Now I work on clutch-throttle coordination, and it 's paying off." As luck would have it, Wilson missed ' the holeshot and let Barnes and Fullmer get in front of him in the second moto. He wasted no time in passing them both and won again convincingly. . Bob Wilson and Dirk Clayson dominated 250cc Novice racing. Wilson had to come from fourth place in the first moto, then ran away from division one riders. He never slacked off in the second moto, riding hard to the flag for two wins. Clayson grabbed the lead off the start and won both of his races to secure first overall in division two. Rick Jewett and Ric Johnson swapped second and third finishes for the runner-up positions. Merlin Bowen made a first - and third stand up for.arroverall win over Brett Wilson and Bret Rowley in the 125cc Novice's first division. Wilson watched the pack get a sizeable lead after a starting line tangle wi th two other bikes but got up to finish a flashy third. A strong second behind Rowley in the last moto gave Wilson second overall after his racing looked.to be over before he had gone 50 yards. Adam Riley 's spill while leading the next div ision of 125cc Novices cost him an overall win. Jeff Chesnut inherited the lead from Riley and won the first rnoto, then was content to trail Riley's winning ride in the second. Chesnut was first , Riley second, and Alan Page took third. Consistency paid off for Open Novice Bill Tasker as he methodically worked up for a pair of seconds , behind Frank Riding in the first moto and Nathan Roberts in the second. Riding had a third and Roberts a fifth in their other motos to finish behind Tasker. Ricky Bleggi put on the most spectacular move of the night when he passed three riders in one tum to come from fourth to first and soundly thrash the 80cc Novice field. T.]. Stanworth won a pair to top the Minis, and Coyd Thomas did the same to beat the 80cc Amateurs. Rapidly improving Steven Hatch was third behind Selby Bringhurst. Casey Newberry beat Johnny Ross and Vince Barnes in the tough 80cc Amateur 12-15 division which is so evenly matched, anyone is capable to winning. Results MINI : 1. T.J. Stanworth (yam); 2. Smith gains MRA point lead at Aspen RR By Joe Day ASPEN, CO , JULY 4 .T h e Mountain Roadracing Association held its fifth race of the 1982 season today at the Woody Creek Raceway. .Formula Three was dominated by veteran dirt rid er Mark Smith on his Yamaha XT500. Smith led the field of 16 riders for the entire race , con- , stantly challenged by Rick Orlando. Orlando, racing a TZ250 with an aircooled 350 top end, stalked Smith for 10 laps waiting to reel him in. The fans , used to Orlando's style of II thhour passes , cheered from the bleachers as Smith refused Orlando's moves and took the checkered flag. Mike Davidson rode to third on his TZ250. In 860cc Superbike, Mark Smith's XT500 was again nibbled at by Orlando. this time on a stock GS750 . The Smith-Orlando show was punctuated by bursts from Alvie Gray and last season's number one rider Norm Meyer, but Smith held off all comers to take another first place, followed by Orlando and Bruce Gibson on the KZ750. An oil spill on the far end of the course made Formula One and Two more difficult as Mark Smith once again got the holeshot on the pack. This time, Orlando had his way and pulled Smith on the back straightaway after seven laps. The 350 in the TZ frame proved strong enough to win the race for Orlando, Smith taking second, and third going to Dr. Dave Kieffer, campaigning the very strong.KZlOOOA. Results BEG: 1. Olson, Stork, Molder make 'SO MXcash By Brian George RAPID CITY, SO, JULY 4 Rushmore Cycle Club members took advantage of the long Fourth of July weekend and some exce pt iona l ly good weather to hold a local motocross race upon the Rice Cycles Motocross Track today , where 90 degree temperatures and hot competition led up to the night's aerial fireworks action. Nearly 100 riders made the event and found a revised track with a new starting line and infield section, thanks to the work of Mark Javersak. In the Professional ranks, Hondamounted Kelly Olson kept thebig 480 together for both motos in the Open division, while Yamaha's Billy "Coyote" Stork roosted all over the I25cc motos. In the 2505,Dave Molder put together his best pair of motos this year to barely edge Mike Friend for the overall in that action. As the first moto of the 250s shot out of the gate, it was Molder grabbing the holeshot with Friend immediately in tow. The two ran away from the battle behind for the rest of the top five among Wade Rice, Keith Parmely and Clint Hilderand, but no matter how hard Molder tried to pull away, Friend was always keeping a few
