Barkman came blazing off the line to ta ke the third and final Expert heat. Chand ler wast ed the th ird J unio r hea t for the win over ha rd charging Ro n Ada ms (Adams Cycl Su pp ly Tri ). Trophy dashes saw Gary Trull (Lo ngview Kaw ), last race's Regional win ner, and Ben nett set u p an immediate clash in No vice, bu t the clash fizzled as Ben nett d ropped back giving T rull an easy win. The Jun ior da sh had Green, Barry Pel key (Mega cycle Cams/ Simpson C-A) and Ch and ler lead off the line. Pelkey mad e a move to take the lead , but like a bad check, Green .ca me bound ing back to take the win . Expert action had Fay take the lead over J eff Camp bell (Boss Fra mes/ O u t ' Front No . Pla tes/ Simpson Tri) and Dodge. Fay shook off the dead ly 750 duo to tak e th e win rat her effo rtlessly and la y a big one on an unsuspecting tro phy gi rl. Once the track was dragged to perfection , 12 Novice fin alists geared up to stage an all-o u t war. J eff Harsha (Data Control/H uffman Wright L ogging Yam ) took holeshot honor s over Vince G ildn er (Lakesid e Pl um bing Hon ), Trull , Bennett and Sco tt An nis (Yamaha Sports Center Suz). The pa ck soon bega n pulling for position s, and th e order had it Benne tt in the lead followed by G ildner, H arsha and R ya n Fisher (Ga rn er's Yam) . Californi an J oe Kn igh t (Yam ) hounded H arsha fro m behind a nd ma de a mo ve to settle into a n early th ird while Ben nett moved aw ay fro m Gildner to ope n up a sizea ble lead on the pa ck. G ild ner, Trull, Kn igh t, Ha rsha and Mike La wrence (Lectro n Hon ) made up a dice wit h G ildner claimi ng sole posession of seco nd a good di stance behind Benne tt. T rull , Knight, and Harsha followed. J unior ma in racing had n um erous restarts tha t delayed act ion . Once underway, Ch andler and Pelkey (who were the onl y two in row one) motored on the pack with Pelkey cha llenging the Honda ri der for th e lead . Pelkey took th e lead the next lap on ly to go out, gi ving Chandler his lead bac k and putting Green int o a clo sing second spot foll owed by Danny Moore (American Hon ), Sco tt Miller (T ra k Tak Tri ) and Mar k Rooks (H on). Green slid out on the last lap wh ile tryi ng to reel teammate Cha ndler in which open ed the runner-u p spot for Moo re wh o had Mill er on his rear wheel. Ch and ler wasn't to be den ied the win wi th Moore second , Miller third, Rooks fourth and Em ory Gray (Yam of Fair Oaks) fifth and David Whiting (D&V Yam ) sixth . The Expert ma in event had Barkman (Simpson/ O ut Fro nt No . Plates/ Lectron York H o n ), McCu llough and Fay coming off the lin e three abreas t a t th e gr een ligh t. Fay was ted very little time at taking over the lead while McCu lloug h p ulled the big 750 T rium ph into challe ng ing ra nge and briefly took th e lead wh ich Fa y sna p ped ba c k . Ba rkma n blazed through the madness on the outside to take the lead as H urst was right there to disp lace Fay and McCullough, and the or der became Barkman, H urst, Fay H endrickson , Dodge and Gary Davis (T ri) at the half. Nothing Hurst did could take the lead away from the th e determ ined Barkman, who had less to worry about when Hurst dro pped it, p u tting Fa y in second for th e rema inder of the race, quite aways ahead of fellow Washingtonian Fay and H endrickson. Fourth at th e flag went to Dodge who held off Davis, Kirk Strong (H o n) , McCullough and Jeff McDaniel (Sim pson/ O ut Fro nt No. Plates/ Yo rk Hon ) at bay. Results MAIN EX: 1. T he wea ther was hot wit h no clouds and no wind - this combination makes the la p tim es very fast but also melts tires. The Form u la Trace - AKA Rol ling Thunder - started with a bang as Vance Breese on his BUB/S&S C ycle/Custom C h ro m e Harl ey Davidson ex p loded into th e lead. H e was chased by Phi l Beck on a Moto Guzzi and Ed Rayon a Ducati, Vance's Harley was wo rki ng well , a nd he lengthened hi s lead with eac h lap. But at the midway po int things bega n to change. Breese got h is front end loose at the ent rance to turn seven, a hard righ thand hair p in at the end of a 100+ m p h strai g ht. Then in turn nine he fou nd h imself in a wobble that twisted his front end from stop to stop. Vance said later, " I tho ught I had a flat, bu t when I slowed do wn , it started working O K. I guess, I just overheated the tire. " This a llowed Beck on hi s Devi l Mountain Mfg . Moto Guzzi to pu ll in the thunderi ng Ha rley. Wh en the white flag ca me out Beck was righ t on Breese's tai l and loo king for room to pass. Beck fo und h is chance at the ent ra nce to the carousel. H e made a clean pa ss and stayed in front of the Harley all the way thro ug h th e esses, but Breese made a bid for th e lead in a braking battle in turn 11 . Beck main tained a cleaner lin e through tha t turn allow ing him to get a better sho t o ut onto the straight taking th e win. The Formula S race bro ugh t a rema tch between Chuck McAvoy and Kurt Bickel. Chuck rides a highly modified Ho nda 500 single, sponsored and tuned by Ph il H eadley of Golden Wenc h Cycle Repair.
