In the 250cc class Jeff Springman tore off with the lead first round, and riding an absolu tely perfect line la p after lap, kept Pete Hames beh ind hi m until two laps fro m the end wh en Pete finall y got by him in the south tum. It was neat l Second race, Hames did no t line up - his bike had seized as he rode back to the pi ts first time o ut. Again Sp ri ngm an took off with Chris Can non right after him. It looked like a runaway, but as Yogi Berra says, " It ain't over 'til it 's over," and there was Can non right up to Jeff's rear wheel. Springm an's rear bra ke had come adrift and was flying around, walloping hi m in the leg until th e caliper finally came off and just th e cable was left, but he hung on to his first spot. Chris Ca nno n was really on it first 500cc Pro race , taking the lead from H ames a t about the halfway point, after getting by Joel Windham wh o hung onto second for a while. Windham eme rged third overall with two th irds , and John Sperry was back from the Gra nd Na tional tra il to get fourth. O u t again after a year-and-ahalf la yo ff was Don "T-Bone " Grigsby who didn't appear to waste much time in getting some smoothness back in spite of th e layoff by ha ving one whale of a good dice with Sperry in the second rou nd , a nd Dennis P inheiro in the third . A good group and a good class, wi th H a mes leading the second round start to finish. _ Dave Dungey wo n 500cc J u n ior 2-1 with a fun nde wi th lots of passing over Jim Kesler with a 1-2. In combined Open Pro/ 500cc In termedia te we couldn't tell upstairs who got second in the first race; it wa s that close at th e line between Jeff Runyan and Orlando Lamboy as they came in beh ind leader Chris Can non. II la p s af ter Runyan ha d passed Skip Cristy. The scorers ga ve it to Jeff. Nex t round again went to Cannon wi th Orlando second. T his time Runyan fought it out with Cristy for a while before getting up to Lam boy. Lamboy held him off for a whi le but fina lly caug h t his toe, kickin g his leg bac k as far as th e rear of his seat, and he ended th ird. A reall y good show. ams pulled far ahead while a stiff ba ttle ensued for seco nd place. R un n ing rim to rim, Balderston and Parks continued to figh t for the seco nd place position. Williams took th e win, Parks finish ed second, and Balderston took third. today. As the gate dropped for the first round of the Open Pro race , Simi Honda-sponsored Andy R ichard jumped into the lead followed by Warren Wilson H on da -sp on so red Adam Ford. Ford put the pressure on Richard to take over the lead and the first moto win. Round two saw Ford jumping into the lead with Richard on his tail. Ford was able to take the second moto win and the overall for the da y wi th Richard taking second. In the 250cc Pro class , it was bac kto-back wins for Suzuki of Santa Barbara rider Andy Segale. As the ga te dropped for rnoto one it was Sega le jumping into the lead with Sunshine Yamaha-mounted Erin Buskirk taking over the second place spot a nd Kolbe Cycle H onda -mo un ted John Biffle in third. Segale came up with the win. Round two again saw Segale ta king the lead with Buskirk in second and Kawasaki Center rider Scott Curtis in third. Buskirk put up a strong fight, but it was Segale with the win and the overall for the da y with Buskirk finishing in second and Curtis taking home the third place honors.
