Owens doubles at SNRR By Don Akers LAS VEGAS, NV, J U NE 27 Lance Owens, after a long lay off, won both the 600cc Production and 750cc Prod uction races at Las Vegas Speedro me today. The opening race of the day was the Vintage class . Bo b Rapp, on h is Zimmer Tuning Specialties 250 Kawasaki took an early lead and was never headed. W.H. Wagner looked like he might be a th rea t on his Zimmertuned 250 Benelli but was forced out of the race early with mechanical di fficulties. That left only Albert H lebasko on a 250 BSA to try and shut down the fast running Rapp. Nice try, but no cigar. Next on the grid was the 600cc Productio n class. Lance Owens wasted no time and powered through turn one at the head of the pack. Sli m Stephens, rid ing a G Pz550 sponsored by Kawasaki WestiTPI /Waynes Machine Shop, was running a strong second, but the Wildlife Perform ancetuned bike of O wens seemed to have a sma ll horsepower advantage. Mean wh ile " Mr. Clean " Henry T ecza and Utah farm boy Jim Cox were havi ng a fierce battle for th ird . Cox, riding a G S450, managed to beat Tecza's GPz550 into the first corner. Tecza, however, is no t a ma n who gives up easily. He chaIlenged Cox in almost every corner until the next to the last lap, when he finaIl y got by the hard charging Cox. At the flag it was Owens first, Step hen s second, Tecza third and Cox fourt h. In the 750cc Prod uction class "M r. Clean" took the holesh ot. He held that position unti l the third lap whe n O wens slip ped by h im in turn three. Try as he migh t, T eczacou ldn't repass Owens, and at the checkered flag it was Owens first, Tecza second and Cox third.
